The Reality-Based Learning Method: A Simple Method for Keeping Teaching Activities Relevant and Effective
Louise W. Smith Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland Doris C. Van Doren Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland Active and experiential learning theory have not dramatically changed collegiate classroom teaching methods, although they have long been included in the pedagogical literature. This article presents an evolved method, reality based learning, that aids professors in including active learning activities with feelings of clarity and confidence. The reality-based learning method subjects each learning activity to a 4-point framework that is used by the professor in all stages, planning, implementation

2005 National Police Championships
Due to Hurricane Katrina's devastation of the Gulf Coast region, NRA has been forced to cancel the 44th Annual National Police Championships. The tournament had been scheduled to be held September 11-15 in Jackson, Miss., which is in the area directly impacted by the hurricane. "This difficult but prudent decision was reached after extended internal discussions and consultations with all involved parties," said Kayne Robinson, former Assistant Chief of Police in Des Moines, Iowa, and now Executive Director of NRA's General Operations. "It is heartrending to see the tragedy that has befallen the citizens of the Gulf states," he continued. "The human toll is tragic. Hundreds of law enforcement officers from the region are obviously needed to deal with the extreme emergency produced by the hurricane. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are coping through this difficult time." The National Police Championships are considered by many to be the world's most prestigious police shooting contest. Nearly 500 competitors from five countries were expected to participate this year.

Activities to Help Your Child Learn to Write Things to Know Pointers for Parents Activities to Do Acknowledgments
American children must be ready to learn from the first day of school. And of course, preparing children for school is a historic responsibility of parents.
Should you help your child with writing?
Yes, if you want your child to:
Do well in school
Enjoy self-expression
Become more self-reliant
You know how important writing will be to your child's life. It will be important from first-grade through college and throughout adulthood.
Writing is: Practical. Most of us make lists, jot down reminders, and write notes and instructions at least occasionally. Job-Related. Professional and white-collar workers write frequentlypreparing memos, letters, briefing papers, sales reports, articles, research reports, proposals, and the like. Most workers do "some" writing on the job. Stimulating.

Brighten Up the Holidays with Cross-Curriculum Activities
Looking for a way to brighten up the holidays? Education World offers more than a dozen across-the-curriculum activities that teach skills while celebrating the season! Note: This article was originally published in 1997. The introduction to the article is dated (the Web site Karen Slaven designed is no longer available on the Net), but we have left the introduction intact because we feel Slaven's project is one teachers might use or adapt. The balance of the article includes many timely activity ideas. All the activities and links that follow the introduction have been updated to ensure they remain as valuable now as they were when first published. In Loogootee, Indiana, students in Karen Slaven's second-grade class are learning all about the holiday customs and activities of children around the world. In October, Slaven posted her holiday project idea to Global SchoolNet's Internet Projects Registry. She was looking for PreK-3 classes willing to share information about holiday and winter activities, customs, and celebrations in their part of the world. "We have 29 schools from around the world participating," Slaven told Education World. "Included are schools in the United States, Canada, France, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand."

By Margaret J. Erthal Typewriting, once the domain of business education teachers, was taught in high school. The vocational business curriculum dictated a year of Typewriting I at the freshman level, a year of Typewriting II at the sophomore level, a year of Office Practice and Shorthand I at the junior level, and a year of Secretarial Practice and Shorthand II at the senior level. This curriculum was adhered to by the majority of schools as the objective of business education was vocational in nature. The introduction of the personal computer changed the business education curriculum and the method in which typewriting instruction was delivered. Computers allowed students to become more efficient as they keyed letters, memos, reports, and tables within the business education classroom. Soon, other disciplines began to take advantage of the efficiency and effectiveness of computers.English teachers required typed papers in English Composition class, and mathematics teachers used BASIC programming to expand on paper and pencil problems. A new class, Computer Literacy, appeared in school curricula and eventually achieved the status of a "required" course. Business teachers believed they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach Computer Literacy, but were soon faced with science and math teachers who also felt they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach this course.

A World of Resources for K-12 Teaching
In this Information Age we are instantaneously aware of international events and how these events affect our communities, our countries, and us. Television and the Internet are the primary media conduits of international news, but the conflict between entertainment value and educational value often limits their capacity to convey a concrete understanding of global issues to their audiences. To meet the needs of students today, teachers must have a base of expertise grounded in the realities of the "e-world," in which increasing access to information necessitates a broader intercultural understanding. The ability to interpret and incorporate current issues into classroom teaching requires an understanding of historical, cultural, political and economic contexts, and an awareness of available teaching resources. In support of this broader understanding, the US Department of Education (the department/ED) awards funds for an array of programs designed to facilitate access to internationally-focused professional development and curricular resources for K-12 (elementary and secondary) teachers. During a summer, an academic year, or year-round, there are overseas study opportunities, training institutes, and teaching materials available at low or no cost to savvy educators who know where to find them.
