165. Gun Free Kids
Contact national and local elected officials to support gun legislation that helps keep guns away from children.
http://www.gunfreekids.org/
Welcome to GunFreeKids.org. On September 13 2004, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired despite widespread support from law enforcement and the public . 1,963 Police Chiefs and Sheriffs from 37 states have signed on in support of an effective ban in a campaign organized by States United to Prevent Gun Violence , the national organization of 30 state gun violence prevention organizations. Furthermore, a September 6, 2004 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center reported that 68% of Americans wanted the ban extended, including 57% of people with a gun in the household and even 32% of NRA members. President Bush, although he had said he supports a ban on these weapons, has done nothing to help get the ban renewed. He has not asked Congress to take any action and hence has let down the public and in particular law enforcement. ACTION STEP : please call the White House to register your support to ban assault weapons (202-456-1111). Although the expiration of the ban has been a disappointment, gun violence prevention groups will continue to work for a strong effective ban against these weapons of war. Many states already have state assault weapons bans and other states are proposing them and we will be going back to Congress to ask for an effective federal ban. However, GunFreeKids will no longer be an active site. Since its beginning almost five years ago the site has allowed thousands of people to communicate with Congress on this issue. When the site started few others were using such electronic communications. Now there are many sites doing similar things and funding is tight so GunFreeKids will no longer be active. We hope you will keep working on this issue and will use the
