Planning and controlling the financial activities of a business is essential in all types of organisations. This course aims to provide a wide-ranging study of the main areas of Financial Management. The first year introduces and explains the complexity of business and also develops some key skills such as information searching and presentation. The second year provides you with a firm foundation in the principles and practice of accounting and finance, while also presenting the opportunity to take options in related areas. The main skills you develop in the second year relate to team building, leadership and more general problem solving. The final year focuses on corporate finance but also allows you to take options in several areas such as financial accounting, management accounting and finance. All business professionals understand the need to be familiar with finance. This course links specialist knowledge with general business disciplines and also provides a firm foundation for further study (for which some professional exemptions may be available). Career opportunities, therefore, exist for you in business organisations and financial markets.

Top Executives
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Top executives are among the highest paid workers; however, long hours, considerable travel, and intense pressure to succeed are common.
  • The formal education and experience of top executives varies as widely as the nature of their responsibilities.
  • Keen competition is expected because the prestige and high pay attract a large number of qualified applicants.
  • Most government chief executives and legislators are elected; local government managers are appointed.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top A corporation’s goals and policies are established by the chief executive officer in collaboration with other top executives, who are overseen by a board of directors. In a large corporation, the chief executive officer meets frequently with subordinate executives to ensure that operations are conducted in accordance with these policies. The chief executive officer of a corporation retains overall accountability; however, a chief operating officer may be delegated several responsibilities, including the authority to oversee executives who direct the activities of various departments and implement the organization’s policies on a day-to-day basis. In publicly held and nonprofit corporations, the board of directors ultimately is accountable for the success or failure of the enterprise, and the chief executive officer reports to the board.

In 1984, the bureau was renamed the Financial Management Service, reflecting a renewed interest on greater efficiency and economy in government financial management.

By John M. Campbell, Jr., John M. Campbell, Sr., Robert A. Campbell Description: The authors of Analyzing and Managing Risky Investments focus on how changes in the business environment impact decision making, and
how professionals today can better respond to a more fluid and less certain business environment. This textbook bridges the gap between
the traditional valuation process and more modern approaches that address problems such as limited information and inexact equations. The
authors show how analysts can successfully balance time and
knowledge constraints with the demand for good investment decisions.

Expecting others in the organization to manage finances is clearly asking for trouble. Basic skills in financial management start in the critical areas of cash management and bookkeeping, which should be done according to certain financial controls to ensure integrity in the bookkeeping process. New leaders and managers should soon go on to learn how to generate financial statements (from bookkeeping journals) and analyze those statements to really understand the financial condition of the business. Financial analysis shows the "reality" of the situation of a business seen as such, financial management is one of the most important practices in management. This topic will help you understand basic practices in financial management, and build the basic systems and practices needed in a healthy business. Useful Publications
