It may have been the guy in the hood teetering on the stool, electrodes clamped to his genitals. Or smirking Lynndie England and her leash. Maybe it was the smarmy memos tapped out by soft-fingered lawyers itching to justify such barbarism. The grudging, lunatic retreat of the neocons from their long-standing assertion that Saddam was in cahoots with Osama didn't hurt. Even the Enron audiotapes and their celebration of craven sociopathy likely played a part. As a result of all these displays and countless smaller ones, you could feel, a couple of months back, as summer spread across the country, the ground shifting beneath your feet. Not unlike that scene in The Day After Tomorrow , then in theaters, in which the giant ice shelf splits asunder, this was more a paradigm shift than anything strictly tectonic. No cataclysmic ice age, admittedly, yet something was in the air, and people were inhaling deeply. I began to get calls from friends whose parents had always voted Republican, "but not this time." There was the staid Zbigniew Brzezinski on the staid NewsHour with Jim Lehrer sneering at the "Orwellian language" flowing out of the Pentagon. Word spread through the usual channels that old hands from the days of Bush the Elder were quietly (but not

An Interesting Day:
President Bush's Movements and Actions on 9/11
By Allan Wood and Paul Thompson
May 9, 2003
"It was an interesting day." - President Bush, recalling 9/11 [ White House, 1/5/02
Both images taken at 9:03 a.m.: Bush takes part in a meaningless photo-op, knowing full well the US is already under attack. [left, from Booker video, right from Getty Images] At approximately 8:48 a.m. on the morning of September 11, 2001, the first pictures of the burning World Trade Center were broadcast on live television. The news anchors, reporters, and viewers had little idea what had happened in lower Manhattan, but there were some people who did know. By that time, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the National Military Command Center, the Pentagon, the White House, the Secret Service, and Canada's Strategic Command all knew that three commercial airplanes had been hijacked. They knew that one plane had been flown deliberately into the World Trade Center's North Tower; a second plane was wildly off course and also heading toward Manhattan; and a third plane had abruptly turned around over Ohio and was flying back toward Washington, DC.

President Bush is on his second European tour The text of the statement by President George W. Bush to Pope John Paul II: Your Holiness, thank you so much. Mrs. Bush and I are honoured to stand with you today. We are grateful for your welcome. You have been to America many times, and spoken to vast crowds. You have met with four American presidents before me, including my father. In every visit, and every meeting including our meeting today you have reminded America that we have a special calling to promote justice, and to defend the weak and suffering of the world. Text of Joint Resolution On Iraq Passed By The United States Congress
October 11, 2002 The following resolution was passed 296-133 by the House of Representatives and 77-23 by the Senate on October 10 and 11, 2002: Joint Resolution to Authorize the use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq. Whereas in 1990 in response to Iraq's war of aggression against and illegal occupation of Kuwait, the United States forged a coalition of nations to liberate Kuwait and its people in order to defend the national security of the United States and enforce United Nations Security Council resolutions relating to Iraq; Whereas after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Iraq entered into a United Nations sponsored cease-fire agreement pursuant to which Iraq unequivocally agreed, among other things, to eliminate its nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs and the means to deliver and develop them, and to end its support for international terrorism; Whereas the efforts of international weapons inspectors, United States intelligence agencies, and Iraqi defectors led to the discovery that Iraq had large stockpiles of chemical weapons and a large scale biological weapons program, and that Iraq had an advanced nuclear weapons development program that was much closer to producing a nuclear weapon than intelligence reporting had previously indicated;

Bush presents conservatives with a fundamental challenge: Do they believe in anything other than power? Are they serious about their rhetoric on limited, constitutionally restrained government? Bush appears to have remained strong in the presidential race by rallying conservatives behind him. In his convention acceptance speech he derided Sen. John Kerry's claim to represent "conservative values" and seized the mantle of promoting liberty at home and abroad.

Brent Scowcroft, a mentor to the current national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, also said in an interview published in England that Bush is inordinately influenced by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. "Sharon just has him wrapped around his little finger," Scowcroft told London's Financial Times. "I think the president is mesmerized." Scowcroft said the Bush administration's "unilateralist" position was partly responsible for the post-Sept. 11, 2001, decline of the trans-Atlantic relationship. "It's in general bad," he said. "It's not really hostile, but there's an edge to it." Early on, he said, "We had gotten contemptuous of Europeans and their weaknesses. We had really turned unilateral."

    Shock and Awe In the Senate
    The filibuster protects minority rights, enabling government to measure and respect not merely numbers but intensity in political disputes
    By By George Will Newsweek Dec. 6 issue - Republican senators, justifiably indignant about Democrats' filibustering to block confirmation votes for judicial nominees, are contemplating a parliamentary version of shock and awe. Evincing what historian Richard Hofstadter called "the ruthlessness of the pure in heart," Republicans might change Senate rules to make filibusters of judicial nominees impossible. Actually, some Republican senators' hearts are about as pure as the driven slush after the treatment they dished out to some of President Clinton's judicial nominees. Republicans respond that Democrats opened this front in the political wars with their 1987 defeat of the Supreme Court nomination of Robert Bork. Democrats reply that in 1968 Republicans filibustered Lyndon Johnson's nomination of Abe Fortas to be chief justice. But Republicans say the issue then was not ideology but corruption. And so it goes. MOST-POPULAR ARTICLES Are You Working Yourself to Death?

    Card tells Bush: "America is under attack."
    Longer Introduction >>> At 9:03 AM on 11 September 2001, the second airplane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. President Bush was in Florida, at the Emma T. Booker Elementary School, listening to children read. Chief of Staff Andrew Card came over and whispered in Bush's ear, "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack." What did the Commander in Chief do? Nothing. He sat there. He sat for well over 5 minutes, doing nothing while 3,000 people were dying and the attacks were still in progress.
