An Education Development Centre (EDC) was set up which brought together and reintegrated trained Somali educationists into their specialized work.
The creation of PEER and other similar programmes in Cambodia, Afghanistan, Burundi, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Angola, Mozambique, Haiti, Guinea, etc. is UNESCO's response to emergency and post-conflict situations.
This response typically translates into educational interventions all along the Assistance to Reconstruction and Sustainable development. Problems such as absence of standardized curricula, destroyed school infrastructure, need for re-professionalization (of teachers, inspectors and educational administrators), and the need for peace, tolerance, reconciliation, Human Rights are addressed through such things as Teacher Emergency Packages, teacher training, etc.

Published directories of African museums
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has compiled a Directory of Museums in Africa , published by Paul Kegan International in 1990. ICOM and the West African Museums Programme (WAMP) have published a Directory of Museum Professionals in Africa in 1993. While this concentrates on museum staff and their professional expertise, it also includes details of many of the museums in Africa. A new edition of this guide is currently under development. Further details from the ICOM Web site or the ICOM Secretariat

The Virtual Library museum pages (VLmp) provide a general directory of museums on the Internet, supported by ICOM. At present, this only includes a few references to African museums , but it should be monitored for new entries.

THE MUSIC OF AFRICA
Breadth and diversity
"For the majority of Africans, music remains live and closely tied to their daily lives. The fact that this existence is now under threat from war, famine, invasion and western cultural imperialism in no way diminishes the continuing contribution which Africa makes to the enrichment of our daily lives."
Ronnie Graham, The Da Capo Guide to Contemporary African Music, p. 15 T he music of Africa cannot be squeezed into one mold. There is the traditional music of drums (perhaps the predominant musical reference point in the minds of Westerners); there is the modern or popular music of Mali's Ali Farka Tour e, Nigeria's King Sunny Ade and his African Beats, and South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo. In fact, as musicologist John Storm Roberts has observed, "there's no way to write coherently about the music of a continent covering 52 independent nations, be tween 800 and 1600 languages (depending on your definition), and at least five major cultural groupings." Roberts, who is founding director of Original Music (Tivoli, N.Y.), is responsible for the World Music chapter of the

OVERVIEW
The Africa House and Seminar has three purposes: (1) to offer students a sense of the richness and variety of African culture, (2) to provide an introduction to different topics in African studies, and (3) to provide advice for students who would like to spend some weeks or a semester in an African University. Through its residential component, the program offers students shared experience and an opportunity for participation in the exploration of Africa’s incredibly rich and diverse culture. The Introductory course offered in the Fall Semester, and the Seminar offered in the Spring semester provide a grasp in interdisciplinary fashion of the situations and problems in Africa. Regular brown-bag and discussion series, organized jointly with the African Studies Program, on topics of African relevance take place throughout the year. The program promotes interactions between participating students and Africans and Africanists in the community. Africa House and Seminar combines the traditional humanities and social science concerns of African Studies with environmental, agricultural, health and technological issues and highlights women’s roles in development, politics and culture.

SUMMER, 1998: Volume 3 Issue 2 Report on African Great Lakes Initiative by Dave Zarembka As of the end of April, the response to Friends Peace Teams Project's initiative-developing an alliance with African Quakers to introduce the essence of the peacemaking programs of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), Children's Creative Response to Conflict (CCRC), and Help Increase the Peace Project (HIPP) in the Great Lakes Region of Africa-has been extremely positive. We have been delighted to hear about the project of sending an exploration team to our region to see what the Peace Teams can do. This is exactly what has been our vision since our country, Burundi, entered into a crisis. David Niyonzima As can be expected, those people who are trainers in the various programs have been the most positive, with many willing to pack their bags and go right on over. Africans residing in the United States, both Quaker and non-Quaker, have also been positive in their response. Friends World Committee for Consultation in London responded with a list of about sixty people, including individuals from all fourteen yearly meetings in Kenya and Tanzania, who needed to receive a copy of the exploration proposal. These letters were sent out at the beginning of April, all by regular mail so that expatriates who frequently have access to e-mail would not be at an advantage to those who do not, including most Africans.

The burundi Peace Negotiations is a project of the Foundation. with its basicmandate to promote the social, cultural and political unity of africa.

AFRICAN UNITY PROGRAMME
The Burundi Peace Process
The Millennium Agenda for a Culture of Peace, Unity, Good Governance and People Centred Development

The objectives of the programme are for setting a policy agenda to build a culture of peace, unity, good governance and people centred development in the Great Lakes Region. The Programme and activities that are to inform the process of setting the agenda will begin with the international conference on the Great Lakes. This conference will be a forum for analysing problems proposing solutions and defining a process that will contribute to regional integration, participatory democracy, poverty eradication and peace. The second component of the programme is a two-year advocacy and grass roots participatory campaign for policy and structural changes that will provide an environment for the culture of peace, unity and good governance to be realised.
Great Lakes Research Project on Conflict
Management and Conflict Resolution

In order to fulfil its role as a Think-tank and to inform its advocacy work, research is an essential component and activity of the Foundation. Research on conflict prevention and conflict resolution methods and processes in the region will provide the foundation with the necessary data and analysis concerning various efforts at conflict management. Lessons learned from this work will increase the Foundations capacity both in direct peace making efforts and as a policy Think-tank. Increasing the depth and amount of knowledge and information accessible to the Foundation regarding what efforts have been made, what has succeeded and what has failed and why in conflict prevention and resolution and the concomitant problems in maintaining peace will directly contribute to realising overall objectives of the African Unity Programme and the ongoing work in support of the Burundi Peace process.
