Introduction
Burundi is a landlocked country located in east-central Africa. It borders with Rwanda to its north, Tanzania to the east and south and to the west by Zaire.
Burundi is very mountainous, with a western range of mountains running north and south and continuing into Rwanda. The only land below 3,000 ft is a narrow strip of plain along the Ruzizi River which forms the western border north of Lake Tanganyika. From the mountains eastwards, the land declines gradually, dropping to about 4,500 ft toward the southeastern and southern border. The average elevation of the central plateau is 5,600 ft.
The major rivers form natural boundaries for most the country. The Akanuaru and the Kagera separate Burundi from Rwanda along many sections of the common border. The Kagera and the Ruvuvu are important as the southernmost sources of the Nile. Most of Burundi's southern border is formed by the Malagarazi River.

Fighting is at its worst in outlying areas but gunfire is not uncommon on the streets of the capital, Bujumbura, where a curfew is usually enforced. Although the situation has cooled recently, Burundi still threatens to explode. Travellers are strongly advised to stay away until the violence is over and Burundi gets back on its feet.

Bujumbura - Culture The Drummers of Burundi had the most captivating presence of all the acts at the festival... Every moment, every wail from the players fit into the trance impact of the drummers... The audience stands entranced as one by one the Drummers of Burundi file onto the stage... Arranged in a semi-circle, the massive instruments are lowered to the floor and the drummers begin to dance. One by one they leave the circle to play a larger, decorated central drum, gyrating frantically, appearing to battle each other for its possession. The dancers' fluid movements are punctuated by animated leaping, triggering, complex syncopations between the hide and side-sticked patterns".. Bujumbura is the capital of the Republic of Burundi. The city of nearly 600,000 people is situated in western Burundi's Great Rift Valley on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Called Usumbura until 1962, Bujumbura serves as a shipping centre for Lake Tanganyika trade in coffee, cotton, hides, and tin ore with neighbouring Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tourism showed promise here, too, until the latest round of ethnic and political unrest erupted. Burundi has recently been plagued by bitter strife between its two main ethnic groups: the majority Hutus and ruling minority Tutsis. In 1993, Melchior Ndadaye, a Hutu, won Burundi's first free presidential election, but four months later was overthrown and killed by a Tutsi military coup. Civil unrest has been erupting ever since, rendering Burundi one of the least stable countries in Africa.

Burundi, Culture
The richness of Burundian culture is apparent in a strong literary and musical tradition and a wide range of fine crafts. Little government funding for cultural activities is available. However, an art school at Gitega and an artisans’ center at Giheta have done much to encourage artistic expression and preservation. The major libraries are at the University of Burundi, the American Cultural Center, and the French Cultural Center in Bujumbura and the Burundi Literature Center in Gitega. The most important museums are Bujumbura’s Living Museum (founded in 1977) and the National Museum (founded in 1955) in Gitega. deeper links

CULTURE The landmarks most typical of Burundian culture are the family compounds, called rugos, spread throughout the countryside. In spite of the high population density, people do not live near each other in villages, but rather in their own compounds composed of bee-hive style huts surrounded by a high hedge or reed wall. The huts are placed in particular and symbolic ways. The Living Museum in the capital, Bujumbura, is a recreation of such settlements that also displays basketwork, pottery, drums, and photographs. The second-largest town in Burundi, Gitega, has a national museum that is small but very educational.
