Date: Sunday, 19 March 2000, at 1:57 a.m. Today, Sunday, March 19, 2000, is The First Sir Richard Burton Day! (That would be Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton – the one who knew lots and lots of ladies, but never one named Liz Taylor, because he lived a whole century before her and his accidental
namesake from Wales.) Today, as we celebrate, think "Far-away Places" – big time! For this is the birth anniversary (in 1821) of the eminent English explorer, linguist, and writer who really did go places no one else ever had – or, at least, in ways nobody else had been able to do, or even tried! For instance, in 1853, Sir Richard disguised himself as an Afghan pilgrim so he could see the "forbidden city" of Mecca; he saw others, including Medina and Harer, the same way. And he came out alive – which no other European interloper ever had. With a companion, John Hanning Speke, he searched for the headwaters of the Nile. That was in 1858. Beginning in 1861, he served in an official capacity in such places as West Africa, South America, and the Middle East.

Historical Fencing Studies
By John Clements
At present, for a dedicated few, the pursuit of Renaissance martial arts is far more than just a passing interest or curiosity or another in a long series of martial arts fad. It is a sincere way of studying historical skills while connecting to the cultural roots of their own heritage. Such an effort actually was underway over 100 years ago and in, of all places, Britain. Several Victorian military men, namely Captain Alfred Hutton, Egerton Castle, Captain Carl Thimm, Colonel Cyril Matthey, Sir Frederick and William Pollock, and Captain Sir Richard Burton, were fencers interested in the history and practice of antique forms of fence. Their legacy is with us in the current resurgence of historical fencing interest now underway. It proved so popular that, in 1891, it was translated into French and German. Enlarged and revised in an 1896 edition, it was the most complete compilation on the subject at the time, even superceding contemporaneous Italian and French attempts. Though Thimm often listed titles he had never seen or read and duplicated or incorrectly listed many entries, even today his work serves as a primary resource. Thimm

Born in 1483 in Muslim Granada. In 1518, the young Hasan ibn Muhammad al Wazzan al-Fasi was captured from an Arab galley by Christian corsairs (at the time, piracy was endemic in the Mediterranean). Because he had travelled widely, despite being only in his thirties, he was spared slavery and taken instead for an audience with Pope Leo X, who had acquired a commendable reputation for welcoming fresh intellectual talent into his Renaissance court (though he was later to excommunicate Luther). Leo X baptised the young Moor as Giovanni Leone, who was then given the freedom to complete his astonishing History and Description of Africa and Notable Things therein contained , published in Italian in 1526. It is still considered to be one of the most competent and indeed enduringly fascinating works on the continent's history.
Until the arrival of the French in 1912, Moroccan Jews were obliged to remove their shoes in Moorish quarters, and when passing mosques or the houses of sharifs. They were expected to yield right of way to Muslims in the street, and were forbidden to wear fine clothes or to ride horses. In addition, Jews had to pay the jizya mellah is Arabic for salt, and was used to describe the Jewish quarters because they were given the task of salting the severed heads of criminals before they were put on public display.

The hard way. Steve Harvey 09-28-2000, 11:33 PM Well, I don't know the history of the FMA in the US all that well, but as I understand it, Angel Cabales is known as the father of FMA in the US. What I understand is that he was just about the first FMA grand master to teach the FMA openly, so it may well have been one of his first students. There is a list of GM Cabales' master certificate holders in Mark Wiley's book, and it may well be one of them.
It gets pretty technical though, trying to figure out who was "western" enough to be GM Cabales first "western" student. Suro Inay was born in the US, but GM Cabales may have taught other Filipino-Americans privately before he started his school.

Sent as the Pope's ambassador to the Mongols, Carpini was the first European to describe the vast steppe country of Central Asia. More than 60 years old when he started out on Easter Day 1245, this Franciscan friar withstood the bitter cold of the Siberian winter as he travelled to the court of the Great Khan (Emperor) in Mongolia. On his return he wrote A History of the Tartars, describing their customs, such as drinking mare's milk, and how they had become the finest cavalry of their day 02 Marco Polo 1254-1324. Venetian.
Illustrated: Marco Polo presented at court to Kublai Khan.
17 years old when he began his travels with his uncle and father, Marco Polo crossed the Persian desert, climbed the Pamirs, and finally reached the court of the great Khan, Kublai, near Peking. Travelling about China he observed the use of paper money, coal, and the huge Chinese cities. 24 years later when he returned to Venice, few people believed his descriptions. But asked on his deathbed to recant, Marco answered "I have not told half of what I saw". 03 Leif Ericsson, tenth century A.D. Norseman.
