Background on Middle Passage BY: CHARLES JOHNSON
Dear Jude Morris:
I'm sending you a talk I've given at many schools (first at Stanford in 1999) where all the students on campus were assigned MIDDLE PASSAGE. This version (below) was given at Wofford College in Spantanburg, S.C. a couple of years ago.
All best,
Charles JohnsonThank you all for reading Middle Passage.
It's been some time since I looked at this novel, so I imagine all of you know it far better than I do right now. And I know you probably have questions about Middle Passage. This morning I will like to try to answer some of those questions by giving you a description of the novel's genesis, what I call the story behind the story you read last summer. I would also like to do my best to respond to the one-page papers written by eight wonderful, young critics here at Wofford College: Laura Vaugh, Anna-Maria Clark, Keely Mohon, Byron Fields, Gaby Dido, Rachel Moore, Patrick Holland Brennan, and Rhea DeJesus. All of them gave thoughtful and provocative answers to the difficult question, "Are you Rutherford?"
But I have to ask you to please be patient with me as I excavate the history of this novel because every work of art is, first and foremost, a process of discovery for the reader and the writer both. And when I say discovery I mean just that. The writer discovers his characters and what they will do during the process of creation-and not before. He discovers a great deal about himself, and he is always changed by the story for which he has simply served as a midwife.

Guide Review Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton by Edward Rice
When this book was first published in hardback in 1990 it had the subtitle "The secret agent who made the pilgrimage to Mecca, discovered the kama sutra , and brought the Arabian Knights to the west" - which manages to completely ignore Burton's journeys of discovery in Africa. Fortunately there is sufficient reference to his time exploring Egypt and Central Africa, but you will find his other exploits just as captivating and you will almost certainly want to read the whole biography. This is an essential addition to your bookshelf.

BURTON, SIR RICHARD FRANCIS Besides Lady Burtons Life of Sir Richard F. Burton (2 vols., 1893, 2nd edition, condensed, edited, with a preface. by W. H. Wilkins, 1898), there are A Sketch of the Career of R. F. Burton, by A. B. Richards, Andrew Wilson, and St Clair Baddeley (1886); The True Life of Captain Sir Richard F. Burton, by his niece, G. M. Stisted (1896); and a brief sketch by the present writer prefixed to Bohns edition of the Pilgrimage to Al-Medinah and Meccah (1898), from which some sentences have here been by permission reproduced. In 1906 appeared the Life of Sir Richard Burton, by Thomas Wright of Olney, in two volumes, an industrious and rather critical work, interesting in particular for the doubts it casts on Burtons originality as an Arabic translator, and emphasizing his indebtedness to Paynes translation (i881) of the Arabian Nights. Sir Richard Francis Burton
(1821-1890 e.v.)
by T. Apiryon
English explorer, orientalist, scholar, linguist, sexologist, mystic and spy. He was raised in France and Italy and studied at Oxford. He served as a Captain in the Bombay Native Infantry in what is now Pakistan from 1843 to 1848. He travelled the world in service to the British government, and served as British Consul on the island of Fernando Poo off the coast of Equatorial Guinea; in Santos, Brazil; in Damascus; and in Trieste, where he died. Burton wrote the poem The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî and translated The Arabian Nights (Alf Laylah wa Laylah, the Thousand Nights and a Night) with copious annotations; both of these works are included in Section 2 of the A:. A:. reading list. He also translated the erotic manuals The Kama Sutra, The Ananda Ranga, and The Scented Garden of Sheikh Nefzawi, which are given as recommended reading in Liber Artemis Iota. Burton also wrote A Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Mecca and Al-Madina, which is the account of his participation in the Hajj in 1853, impersonating an Indian Pathan. His success in this dangerous feat was due to his intimate familiarity with the languages and customs of the region, and also perhaps to the fact that he was an initiate of the Kadiri Order of Dervishes. He was one of the first Europeans to explore East Africa, and was one of the discoverers of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria Nyanza. His other expeditions included one across the United States to Salt Lake City, and a voyage up the Congo River.

More information on Africa

ALBUQUERQUE, AFONSO DE
Afonso de Albuquerque (14-1515) was a Portuguese soldier and explorer who sailed to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas, a group of Islands in Indonesia) in 1507-1511, trying to monopolize trade with this area; from Europe, he sailed around Africa to the Indian Ocean. He was appointed the Viceroy of India by King Emmanuel in 1509. He forcibly destroyed the Indian city of Calicut in January, 1510, and took Goa (in southern India) in March, 1510, claiming Goa for Portugal. BATTUTA, ABU ABDULLAH IBN
Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta [also spelled Buttuta] (1303-1365), was a Moroccan explorer who traveled through Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Far East. A Muslim, he set off on a Hajj (a pilgrimage to the holy town of Mecca) from Tangier, Africa, in 1325 and traveled for almost three decades, covering over 75,000 miles (120,700 km) by boat and over land. He did sail his own boat, but was a passenger on many trading boats. In India, Buttuta was appointed a Magistrate of Delhi (1334-1341). He also traveled to China, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, and much of Africa. Buttuta later recorded his adventures in a popular book, "Travels (Rihala) of Ibn Battuta." He died in Fez, Morocco, in 1365.

The Nile Controversy Who really discovered the source of the Nile River Burton, or his partner John Hanning Speke? The purists say that Speke made the final trip to Lake Tanganyika, and thus deserves the credit. Indeed, Speke and several reluctant guides left the town of Kazeh on July 10th, 1858 to look for the bahr ("sea" or "lake") described to Burton by Arab traders. On August 3rd Speke's group climbed a hill and, reaching the summit, looked out upon "a magnificent sheet of water", which Speke promptly named Lake Victoria. Speke and his companions did not map the extent of the lake or examine the basin further; instead, he accepted without doubt that he had found the source of the great Nile River and turned back to Kazeh. (Speke mounted a second expedition to East Africa in 1860 with Captain James Grant to confirm that the great lake he had gazed upon in 1858 was indeed the source of the Nile. Unfortunately, Speke performed the final reconnaissance of the lake alone and, once again, he did not linger to gather any scientific data about the basin. Explorers who mapped and studied the area in later years did, finally, confirm that Speke's Lake Victoria was the source of the Nile.) Now, look beyond the fact that Speke walked up a hill and saw a large lake. How did he manage to safely travel to Kazeh? Once there, how did he find out about the lake? Who drew the maps he followed, hired his guides, and provisioned his caravan? The point is, of course, that Speke never would have survived the hostile east coast of Africa or managed to locate the lake without the assistance of his travelling companion and the expedition's undoubted leader, Captain Richard Francis Burton.

Did you ever yearn to travel the world? To be the first to go where no one had been before? To meet interesting people in faraway places? Lower School students were lucky enough to do just that during our study of World Explorers. The culminating activity was World Explorer Day, with each student becoming a world explorer of their choice. Dressed in costume, the "explorers" stood in front of the class, introduced themselves, and described their most illustrious exploits. The speeches were terrific, with everyone getting into the fun of the day. What a great way to learn! [TOP] Eric the Red Leif Eriksson Marco Polo Ibn Battuta I am Eric the Red, Viking explorer!
