The History of Burma
The early history of Burma Burma's early history is practically uncharted but by the 8th century the Mons - who probably originated in Central Asia - occupied the lower portions of the Irrawaddy basin, while the Burmans had established themselves on the upper reaches of the Irrawaddy. Burma's subsequent violent history largely concerns the struggle between these 2 predominant racial groups. Kings fought wars in order to carry off slaves from the kingdoms they conquered; it was important to have a large labor force to build temples and pagodas and to grow rice.
The Glass Palace Chronicle of the Kings of Burma (a 19th century historical mythology) claims that the Burmese kings were descendants of the Buddha's family but historians have found no evidence of any ruler before the 1th century King Anawrahta of Pagan. From the 10th century on, the Burmans were the largest group; they were also the most important in terms of their historical, cultural and political contribution to Burma's heritage. Between the I7th and 19th centuries, the Burmans succeeded in uniting the country under one monarch on 3 separate occasions. When each of these empires fragmented, Burma became a muddle of quarrelling races. In the 19th century, the Burmese frequently clashed with the British and were defeated in 1885, resulting in the capture and exile of the last king. Early history

In September that year, the military stepped in. The demonstrations were brutally suppressed and the political upheaval brought to a halt. Far from threatening it, the putsch strengthened the position of Ne Win; the leader of the coup, General Saw Maung, and his senior staff were all known to be long-standing supporters of the reclusive dictator. Although Ne Win relinquished his official title as leader of the nation, he continued to exercise considerable influence over the running of the country. Ex-army General Tin Oo and the Western-educated liberal Aung Sang Suu Kyi, daughter of Aung San, led the principal internal opposition.
After crushing domestic political opposition, the Ne Win junta concluded in 1989 that some political concessions were essential (mostly to assuage international opinion) and announced that elections would be held. The main opposition movements campaigned under the banner of the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, and won the election, which was held in May 1990, taking 80 per cent of the seats in the National Assembly. However, the regime used elaborate delaying tactics and harassment of opposition leaders to hold onto power; Suu Kyi herself was put under house arrest and remained there for five years.

Very briefly, what's the modern history there?
Burma was colonized by the British in 1886 and became independent in 1948. There was a brief period of parliamentary democracy when U Nu served as Prime Minister until 1962 when he was deposed in a military coup by General Ne Win. Apparently Ne Win didn't know what to do next. He's not an economist, not a scientist, not even a politician. He's a general. Since the coup, Burma has been a repressed country cut off from the rest of the world. Ne Win began a policy of extreme isolationism, non-alignment and neutrality. He rejected investments by Western and other foreign governments, nationalized industry, banks, the import/export trade, and retail business. To retain power through such tragic failure he used the skills he had as a general: fear, disappearances, murders, arrests, and torture. He is believed still to wield power.

Britain Annexes Burma
by Charles Kimball
The final dissolution of independent Burma had several causes:
1. The growing demands of British merchants to open up Upper Burma for exploitation. Many of them also wanted to open up a trade route into China from the south.
2. Fears that the French would accomplish the same goals first, especially after the French conquest of Vietnam.
3. Reports of corruption, instability, and atrocities at the court of Burma's last king, a drunkard named Thibaw. Britons were shocked by stories that told of a queen being trampled to death by elephants and of Thibaw ordering the execution of eight of his brothers in a single day. Surely, the Britons told themselves, it was their moral duty to protect others from themselves.
The end came with surgical swiftness; the Third Anglo-Burmese War lasted only one week in 1885. On January 1, 1886, Burma was declared part of British India.

History of Distrust Puts Thai-Myanmar Ties on Brink
Lee Kim Chew,The Straits Times, June 13, 2002
IN TIMES of emergency, blood inspires unity - this was the line a local Myanmar leader used at a rally to stir up patriotic fervour as tension with Thailand escalated.
The government-sponsored rally on June 2 in Taunggyi town marks a new stage in the deterioration of ties between the two neighbours.
As Myanmar's military regime steps up its war against Shan and Karen rebels along the border with Thailand, it also plays the nationalist card to rally the people and bolster its claim as the country's legitimate rulers.
The historical enmity between the two neighbours has been given a sting that will make it harder for Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to improve ties with Yangon's generals.
Until recently, the junta had organised outdoor rallies to denounce internal enemies of the state. Now it organises them to condemn the Thais for conspiring with anti-Yangon insurgents to destabilise Myanmar.
In press conferences, Myanmar's military spokesmen call the Thais 'Yoda- ya', a historical name that harks back to 1767 when the Burmese army sacked the ancient Siamese capital Ayudhya.

Burma was unified by Burman dynasties three times during the past millennium. The first such unification came with the foundation of the Pagan Dynasty in 1044 AD, which is considered the "Golden Age" in Burmese history. It is during this period that Theravada Buddhism first made its appearance in Burma, and the Pagan kings built a massive city with thousands of pagodas and monasteries along the Irrawaddy River. The Pagan Dynasty lasted until 1287 when a Mongol invasion destroyed the city. Ethnic Shan rulers, who established a political center at Ava, filled the ensuing political vacuum for a short time.
In the 15th century, the Toungoo Dynasty succeeded again in unifying under Burman rule a large, multi-ethnic kingdom. This dynasty, which lasted from 1486 until 1752, left little cultural legacy, but expanded the kingdom through conquest of the Shans. Internal power struggles, and the cost of protracted warfare, led to the eventual decline of the Toungoo.
The final Burman royal dynasty, the Konbaung, was established in 1752 under the rule of King Alaungpaya. Like the Toungoo Kings, the Konbaung rulers focused on warfare and conquest. Wars were fought with the ethnic Mons and Arkanese, and with the Siamese. The Burmese sacked the Siamese capital of Ayuthaya in 1767. This period also saw four invasions by the Chinese and three devastating wars with the British.

The Pepsi logos seen throughout Burma, whether on billboards or in the state-run press, should soon be disappearing, sending one message that Burma's dictatorship, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (or SLORC) cannot censor. The recent decision by PepsiCo to cut all ties to Burma by May 31, 1997, is a significant achievement for Burma's democracy movement. A major Western corporation has promised, after much resistance, to leave Burma until democracy is restored.
Although I hesitate to speak of victory (SLORC, after all, has still not respected the results of its own 1990 election), the success of the PepsiCo/Burma boycott is a testament to the potential power of consumers. It would be a mistake to overestimate the boycott's significance, but it would be as big of a mistake to miss it. The dynamics driving this boycott's success warrant careful study by democracy activists. As one closely involved with the boycott, I would like to attempt a brief history of the boycott.
The boycott was first called by the All Burma Students' Democratic Front (ABSDF), which was founded by refugees who had fled SLORC's student massacres in 1988. In the ABSDF's newsletter, DAWN News Bulletin, dated April, 1990, the group argued that, despite the company's disingenuous claims to the contrary, PepsiCo's entry into Burma was "a direct and obvious involvement in Burma's politics." PepsiCo's high profile presence would give the emerging SLORC much-needed money and legitimacy.

Burma and Beyond: The Luce Collection at the National Library of Australia
Article by Andrew Gosling published in National Library of Australia News , 6 (13), October 1996, pp 3-5 Gordon Hannington Luce (1889-1979) is widely regarded as the foremost European scholar on Burma. His outstanding library containing books, manuscripts , maps and photographs was acquired by the National Library of Australia in 1980, as part of its effort to develop major research collections on Asia . The Luce Collection contains important source material not only about Burma, but on neighbouring areas of Southeast Asia, India and China. Luce was born in the English cathedral town of Gloucester, the twelfth child of a clergyman whose family came from Jersey in the Channel Islands. From an early age, Gordon showed an intense interest in history, languages and literature. At six he was reading Homer in Greek. He also became a fine gymnast. There is a story that aged about nine, when told at dinner that children should be seen and not heard he performed a hand-stand on the arms of his chair in silent protest. At Cambridge he read Classics and English Literature. His wide circle of friends included Rupert Brooke, Aldous Huxley, Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, the China scholar Arthur Waley and other notable figures of the Bloomsbury set. Keynes financed the publication of a volume of Luce's poems with illustrations by the artist Duncan Grant.

The official name of the country is the Union of Myanmar (Myanmar from the Burmese word for the martial attributes of strong and fast ). It used to be the Union of Burma and even now most people outside of the country call it Burma but in actuality it is the Burman Empire, basically as it existed in the late nineteenth century when the British conquered it. That encounter was a matter of local imperialists (Burmans) clashing with a global imperialists (the British). But the area which encompasses what later was designated Burma was more of a cockpit in which various ethnic groups vyed for control. The Burmans were in control at the time of the British conquest but there were times in history when other groups such as the Mons or the Tai people of the Shan State were dominant. Bogyoke (Major General) Aung San in 1946 Upon independence in 1948 there was the awkward problem of the non-Burman sections of the country. Aung San formulated a reasonable approach to the problem. He promised that if the peoples of the non-Burman territories sho were seeking independent statehood joined with the core Burman territories in the Union of Burma they would in ten years have the option of seceding from that union. This promise was incorporated into the Constitution. To the great sorrow of the country Aung San was assassinated just before independence. U Nu who took Aung San's place as national leader after independence was an extraordinary individual and an able politician but he did not have the organization skills of Aung San.
