Myanmar Adventure in Myanmar Asia Homepage The World Myanmar, or Burma as it is still more familiarly known in the West, is a country where magnificent and ancient Buddhist temples gaze out serenely over a nation restless for change. Myanmar has plenty of wonders for the eye sinuous, life-giving rivers, lush mountain forests, and intricately-drawn citiesbut it can also trouble the soul. For the last 30 years, its people have been ruled by a notoriously repressive military government, the tatmadaw. Travel to Myanmar is as a result a rather vexed moral question, as the bulk of tourist revenue falls into the government's coffers. Against this coldly financial argument, however, is the notion that interaction with Myanmar's people and culture helps to encourage change. Both perspectives have their defenders; we at Interknowledge leave the decision to you. Location, Geography, Climate The vast majority of Myanmar's people live in the lowland regions of this river valley, in the Irrawaddy basin. This fertile expanse, which sits within the tropical monsoon belt, is one of the world's great rice-growing regions. Myanmar's population includes dozens of different racial and ethnic groups, including the Mon, Burmans, Kachins, Chins, Shans, Rakhine, and Karens, each of which have historically dominated a particular area of the country. Although Burmese is the major and official language, more than a hundred local and regional dialects are spoken throughout Myanmar.

    Background:
Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia, formerly known as Burma.
Previously an independent kingdom, Burma was annexed by the British Empire to the colony of India in 1886. The Japan ese Empire invaded and occupied the country during World War II but it was returned to British control.
The name of the country was changed in 1989 by the ruling military government, officially recognized by the United Nations. Some national governments, such as Canada , the United Kingdom , the United States , and much of the Burmese population do not recognize this name change, since they do not recognize the military government.

    Geography of BURMA (Myanmar)
Burma, renamed Myanmar by the current military regime, lies between Bangladesh and Thailand with coasts on the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. It also shares borders with China in the Northeast, India in the North west, and Laos in the Southeast.
The country's central plains have wide, navigable rivers and form the country's main agricultural region. The central region is surrounded by steep highlands. The highest point, situated at the northern tip of the country, is the Himalayan peak of Mt. Hkakabo Razi, which at 5,881 m is the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Burma experiences hot and wet summers because of the southwest monsoon, while winters are cooler and less humid. The monsoon rains, which bring coolness and water to Burma, also bring with them natural hazards such as cyclones, floods and landslides. The region is also prone to earthquakes. A major part of Burma is forested and logging is a major industry and one of the country's chief exports. Burma has fertile land with abundant natural resources and a predominantly agrarian economy. However, it suffers from extreme poverty, especially in the rural regions, as the economy has suffered for 40 years at the hands of repressive, authoritarian military regimes and which have been unable to put the country on a steady growth path.

    Historical Geography of Burma:
Creation of enduring patterns in the Pyu period
Pyu civilization flourished during most of the first millennium AD at an urban and complex level, and three patterns established by the Pyu were to leave major imprints on the historical geography of Burma that endured until the late nineteenth century, when the colonial conquest transformed the country demographically and economically. Firstly, the Pyu preferred settlement in the Dry Zone, particularly in the valleys of the tributaries of Burma's greatest rivers; secondly, there was development of a repertoire of Pyu irrigation works operating on a variety of scales and firmly imbedded in social structures as well as in these particular environments and economies; and thirdly, at a time of dominance of Mahayana sects in Indian Buddhism, the Pyus adopted Theravada Buddhism, thereby striking a note that has reverberated in Burma ever since. * By JANICE STARGARDT . Throughout c. 1,400 years, the Pyu demonstrated a consistent preference for a particular environmental niche in Burma: the perennial, but highly seasonal tributary streams of Burma's Dry Zone, which flow into its great rivers, the Irrawaddy, the Sittang, the Chindwin, and the Mu. In research published in 1990
