Bulimia nervosa
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
November 2003 Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterised by a cycle of binge-eating and purging. People who have an eating disorder have a fear of weight gain and have abnormal eating habits. Bulimia affects one to two percent of people in the UK, and is most common in young women although it can also affect men. Treatment usually involves psychotherapy and dietary advice, but is only effective if the person wants to get better. Untreated, bulimia can have seriously damage on health.
About bulimia
People with bulimia have cycles of eating large amounts (binge-eating or bingeing) and then finding ways of ridding themselves of the food or of the calories consumed (purging). This may be by vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, enemas, exercise, periods of fasting or a combination of these. During bingeing there may be a feeling of lack of control over food, followed by a feeling of guilt, or a fear of gaining weight. People with eating disorders commonly have low self esteem. Weight control may be used as a substitute for gaining control in other areas of life.

Trying to Understand Anorexia
an essay by Susie Thurmond
Once a vigorous, lithesome young girl, Susie lay quietly among an array of tubes and sterile machines. She was not hospitalized due to a tragic illness or from an accident. Rather, she exemplifies one of the many cases of self-inflicted starvation that sadly affects one percent of our nation's women. You may know or even be an anorexic. Why do these girls torture themselves by denying that most basic human need: food? Teenagers are supposed to have fun and eat ice cream, pizza, and jelly-belly's. Most do, but some become stuck in one of the most difficult psychological maladies to overcome. The answers are varied, but for now we will deal with the most common issue contributing to the disease: pressure. Pressures to be a "super-girl" begin at a very young age nowadays. Whether inflicted by demanding parents, the media, coaches or teachers, the result for the anorexic is a serious lack of self-confidence. There are very high expectations for these girls to achieve. They often equate achievement with love. They become people-pleasers in search of the love and acceptance they so desperately crave.

Bulimia: Signs, Symptoms, Effects, and Treatments
On this page: Signs and symptoms of bulimia How bulimia differs from anorexia Who suffers from bulimia Effects of bulimia ... Related articles Did You Know? Approximately 80% of bulimia nervosa patients are female. Bulimia rarely works well for weight loss. When someone says, "I'd rather die than be fat," she might: the loss of potassium and other minerals from bulimia can lead to heart problems, and even death. Bulimia often starts when a young woman hears others at school talking about an "easy" method to control weight: you can eat anything you want, as much as you want, but never gain a pound! It sounds too good to be true … and, unfortunately, it is. binge eating . The syndrome is called "binging and purging." However, some bulimics will engage in purging simply if they eat more food than they feel they should.
What are the signs and symptoms of bulimia?
Bulimia is usually well concealed from family or friends and can remain undetected for many years. Bulimia is diagnosed when several of the following symptoms exist simultaneously:

New discovery allows quality, lasting relief without drugs or painful procedures - no more binge eating, anorexia or bulimia
These case studies of are found in the EFT archives.: Those of you who have been on this list for awhile will recall Sonia Novinsky, the Brazilian therapist who has contributed so elegantly to our understanding of how best to deliver these procedures. I was privileged to meet this South American Rose in person at the recent Las Vegas Energy Psychology Conference. She and Dr. Carlos Rabinovich, a dedicated Brazilian M.D., were in attendance..
But first, some comments regarding such disorders from beneath my minister's hat. It has long been my view that neither of these is a problem in and of itself. Neither are addictions, cancer and a long list of other ailments/behaviors. Rather, these are often SYMPTOMS which are contributed to by unresolved anger, guilt, fear, etc. These unresolved emotions cause conflicts (lack of peace) within the system and are thus the true causes of many of our problems. Until they are properly resolved, we may just flit from symptom to symptom with the illusion that healing is taking place. We do the best we can given our existing beliefs, attitudes and other resources. But now we have a new understanding about what healing is about. Our new energy based techniques are SHOUTING at us to re-evaluate our previous procedures. With their use, such things as headaches, stomach distress, depression, orthopedic problems and lactose intolerance have gone completely away without pills or surgeries. Further, even the most intense of emotional issues have often subsided without a trace of their return. We are still learning why EFT works so well. It centers around the profound effects of the body's subtle energies using the theory that "the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system." Accordingly, EFT is an emotional form of acupuncture except that we don't use needles. Instead, we tap with the fingertips to stimulate certain meridian energy points while the client is "tuned in" to the problem.

Bulimia
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Bulimia is an illness characterized by uncontrolled episodes of overeating usually followed by self-induced vomiting or other purging (contrast with anorexia nervosa
Alternative Names: Bulimia nervosa; Binge-purge behavior; Eating disorders
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: In bulimia, eating binges may occur as often as several times a day. Induced vomiting known as purging allows the eating to continue without the weight gain; it may continue until interrupted by sleep, abdominal pain , or the presence of another person.
The person is usually aware that their eating pattern is abnormal and may experience fear or guilt associated with the binge-purge episodes. The behavior is usually secretive, although clues to this disorder include overactivity, peculiar eating habits, eating rituals, and frequent weighing. Body weight is usually normal or low, although the person may perceive themselves as overweight
The exact cause of bulimia is unknown, but factors thought to contribute to its development are family problems, maladaptive behavior, self-identity conflict, and cultural overemphasis on physical appearance. Bulimia may be associated with

Possibilities for Change:
Fresh Perspectives on anorexia/bulimia
In the battle against anorexia/bulimia, individuals, the community and social institutions, are either anorexia/bulimia-supporting or fighting against anorexia/bulimia - there is no middle ground. To treat anorexia/bulimia as a problem merely about food, to believe in a genetic basis of behavior, to simply see the problem as an individual pathology, or to treat the problem only through pharmaceuticals, is extremely pro-anorexic/bulimic. These strategies help to maintain the problem by denying the scope of the problem. Pro-anorexic/bulimic ideas would have us believe anorexia/bulimia exists in a vacuum: it is a freak of nature, that it is merely a case of bad genes, the temperment of spoiled, little, rich girls. To take a stance against the problem - to be anti-anorexic/bulimic - is to realize there is a definite and necessary place for medicine in the treatment of anorexia/bulimia. It is also important to realize there are a multitude of social factors living at the very heart of the problem.

More Reading BULIMIA What is Bulimia? Individuals who suffer from Bulimia Nervosa engage in a cycle of binging and purging. They will binge, eating a large quantity of food within a relatively short period of time and then purge, through taking laxatives or self-induced vomiting. What is binge eating? Binge eating is defined as consuming in a relatively short period of time (ie: a two-hour period) an amount of food that is markedly larger than most people would eat during a similar time period. Binge eating also involves a lack of self control during the episode, for example a feeling that one cannot stop eating. What are the causes of Bulimia? While the specific causes vary from case to case, generally bulimics feel overwhelmed in coping with their emotions or are punishing themselves for something that they could not reasonably have caused. Those suffering with Bulimia may engage in episodes of binging and purging to avoid feelings of anger, depression, stress or anxiety. What common traits do bulimics often share?

Binges are common with bulimia, although the frequency of this varies from person to person. Indeed, many bulimics do not binge but simply purge ordinary meals or snacks. Like anorexia, bulimia is nothing to do with weight, calories or being "thin" - these are merely symptoms of underlying turmoil and distress.
