Bulimia nervosa Bulimia nervosa , an eating disorder more commonly known as bulimia , is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by intentionally doing one or more of the following in order to compensate for the intake of the food and prevent weight gain: A person is classified as having bulimia when he or she feels incapable of controlling the urge to binge, even during the binge itself, when he or she consumes a larger amount of food than a person would normally consume at one sitting, and when such behavior occurs at least twice per week for three months. Bulimia is a pathology that sometimes involves body image and the desperate desire to appear thin. The majority of bulimic patients are young females from 10 to 25 years old, although the disorder can occur in people of all ages and both sexes. Bulimia is often less about food, and more to do with deep psychological issues and profound feelings of lack of control. Binge/purge episodes can be severe, sometimes involving rapid and out of control feeding that stops when the sufferers "are interrupted by another person . . . or [when] their stomach hurts from over-extension . . . This cycle may be repeated several times a week or, in serious cases, several times a day."

Bulimia has been reported in male patients (38,42,44,69). Herzog et al. (38) noted an incidence in males of approximately four to five percent of a total population of bulimic patients. Gwirtsman found that ten to 13 percent of male students met DSMIII criteria for bulimia. The mean age of onset ranged fro 21 (38) to 24 (42) years. Duration of illness prior to treatment ranged from six years (42) to 7.4 years (38). This duration is significantly longer than the 4.2 years' duration of illness prior to treatment for bulimic females (38). Approximately two-thirds of bulimic males had a history of being overweight as compared to one-third of bulimic females. Socioeconomic classes were equally distributed in one series (38). Mitchell's (42) study noted that patients were employed, that they were functioning well, and that eleven of twelve were married. The clinical manifestations of male bulimia are comparable to female bulimia. Preoccupation with weight control and associations with the cultural pressures of professional life regarding personal performance (especially in sports, fashion, and musci) have been related to the onset of bulimia in some male patients (44).

SYMPTOMS
People with bulimia nervosa consume large amounts of food and then rid their bodies of the excess calories by vomiting, abusing laxatives or diuretics, taking enemas, or exercising obsessively. Some use a combination of all these forms of purging. Because many individuals with bulimia "binge and purge" in secret and maintain normal or above normal body weight, they can often successfully hide their problem from others for years. Family, friends, and physicians may have difficulty detecting bulimia in someone they know. Many individuals with the disorder remain at normal body weight or above because of their frequent binges and purges, which can range from once or twice a week to several times a day. Dieting heavily between episodes of binging and purging is also common. Eventually, half of those with anorexia will develop bulimia. As with anorexia, bulimia typically begins during adolescence. The condition occurs most often in women but is also found in men. Many individuals with bulimia, ashamed of their strange habits, do not seek help until they reach their thirties or forties. By this time, their eating behavior is deeply ingrained and more difficult to change.

Diagnosing Bulimia: Do You Have A Problem with Food? The first step toward a diagnosis is to admit the existence of an eating disorder. Often, the patient needs to be compelled by a parent or others to see a doctor because the patient may deny and resist the problem. Some patients may even self-diagnose their condition as an allergy to carbohydrates, because after being on a restricted diet, eating carbohydrates can produce gastrointestinal problems, dizziness, weakness, and palpitations. This may lead such people to restrict carbohydrates even more severely.

Definition Bulimia is characterized by a cycle of binge eating followed by purging to try and rid the body of unwanted calories. A binge is different for all individuals. For one person a binge may range from 1000 to 10000 calories, for another, one cookie may be considered a binge. Purging methods usually involve vomiting and laxative abuse. Other forms of purging can involve excessive exercise, fasting, use of diuretics, diet pills and enemas. Bulimics are usually people that do not feel secure about their own self worth. They usually strive for the approval of others. They tend to do whatever they can to please others, while hiding their own feelings. Food becomes their only source of comfort. Bulimia also serves as a function for blocking or letting out feelings. Unlike anorexics, bulimics do realize they have a problem and are more likely to seek help. Signs and Symptoms

What is Anorexia?
Anorexia Nervosa is a condition, usually affecting females but also males as well, in which the sufferer has a morbid fear of gaining weight and fat and calories. It is an obsession with being slim. However, it is much more than simply a diet to avoid consuming food and will attempt to eat as little as possible. In the past, anorexia was largely seen as a physical condition, rather than as a psychological one. Nowadays, it is widely recognized as the latter. An estimated 1% of female colleges students are anorexic. Fortunately, there is now more help than ever available. Sufferers are also prone to bulimic tendencies, such as laxative and diuretics abuse; any attempt to purge the body of food. To Learn More About Anorexia Click Here What is Binge-Eating?

Description
One of two common eating disorders, anorexia is a condition in which a person refuses to eat sufficient food to maintain a minimum normal weight for age and height. The consequent wasting away has serious effects on many body systems, and may result in death. A weight loss of 25% is one criterion for diagnosing anorexia. Tending to start in early teens, 1 in 100 Australian schoolgirls have anorexia nervosa.
Bulimia is an eating disorder marked by cycles of binge eating of excessive quantities of food, followed by purging using vomiting, laxatives or diuretics. Unlike anorexia, a person with bulimia is rarely grossly underweight. The purging can seriously damage health. The gastric acid from vomiting excoriates sensitive oesophageal mucosa; excessive laxative and diuretic use can impair body electrolyte balance, bowel and kidney function. Bulimia tends to start in late teens and older age groups. Estimated to affect about 6% of Australian women.

Bulimia nervosa
Definition
Bulimia nervosa is a serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorder affecting mainly young women. People with bulimia, known as bulimics, consume large amounts of food (binge) and then try to rid themselves of the food and calories (purge) by fasting, excessive exercise , vomiting, or using laxatives . The behavior often serves to reduce stress and relieve anxiety . Because bulimia results from an excessive concern with weight control and self-image, and is often accompanied by depression, it is also considered a psychiatric illness. Description
Bulimia nervosa is a serious health problem for over two million adolescent girls and young women in the United States. The bingeing and purging activity associated with this disorder can cause severe damage, even death , although the risk of death is not as high as for anorexia nervosa , an eating disorder that leads to excessive weight loss. Binge eating may in rare instances cause the stomach to rupture. In the case of purging, heart failure can result due to loss of vital minerals such as potassium. Vomiting causes other serious problems, including acid-related scarring of the fingers (if used to induce vomiting) and damage to tooth enamel. In addition, the tube that brings food from the mouth to the stomach (the esophagus) often becomes inflamed and salivary glands can become swollen. Irregular menstrual periods can also result, and interest in sex may diminish.

Bulimia
Bulimia Overview
Bulimia is an eating disorder. Someone with bulimia might binge on food and then vomit (also called purge) in a cycle of binging and purging. Binge eating refers to quickly eating large amounts of food over short periods of time. Purging involves forced vomiting, laxative use, excessive exercise, or fasting in an attempt to lose weight that might be gained from eating food or binging. The strict medical definition used by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV ) requires 2 binge-eating episodes a week for at least 3 months to make the diagnosis, but it's likely that some people with symptoms of bulimia may not fit these exact criteria. A person with bulimia often feels a loss of control over their eating as well as guilt over their behavior. They are usually aware that their behavior is abnormal. Bulimia is most common in adolescent and young adult women. People with bulimia are often of normal or near-normal weight, which makes them different from people with anorexia (another eating disorder in which the person does not eat).
