192. The Story About Bulgarian Martenitza
Describes the ancient tradition celebrated in bulgaria the first day of March.
http://www.geocities.com/greetings1001/martenitza.html
Martenitza, Martenitsa ( Ìàðòåíèöà) The story about Bulgarian Martenitza In Bulgaria we have a very interesting tradition and it is related to the 1st of March. It is not a big holiday, but it is more traditional than celebration and is based on the founding of Bulgaria, 681 AD.
The month of March according to Bulgarian folk belief marks the beginning of the springtime. Therefore the 1st day of March is a traditional holiday associated with sending off the winter and welcoming the spring.
The tradition is that on the 1st of March and the days after all people give to each other very interesting strips or small wool dalls called Pigo and Penda, or as we call them Martenitzi. They bring the name of March, in Bulgarian Mart. But according to our tradition, behind the name Mart stands an angry old lady who changes her mood very rapidly. Her name is Grandma Marta, in Bulgarian Baba Marta.
The "martenitza" is also an odd artistic image of nature. At that period of the year, nature is full of hopes and expectations. It also symbolized the purity of the white snow going away and the red settings of the sun becoming more and more intensive with the coming spring. These two natural resources are necessary for the life as well as the male and female spirits.
A decoration with "martenitzi" is the most typical and unique Bulgarian tradition. Now the "martenitza" symbolized new life, conception, fertility, and spring. This holiday is for joy, health and long life. This Bulgarian tradition is pure and bright like the colours of the "martenitza". It shows us the neceessity of harmony in nature and in people's lives. This is the sincere message from the "martenitza".

Prague , Czech Republic New Delhi , India
Welcome,
Friday the 14th of September 2001 we have started a trip that is going to be the greatest thing we have ever done in our lives. Since November last year we have been preparing this trip and now it's really happening…
Our plan was: take our (tracking-)bikes, start in Prague, Czech Republic and cycle through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to end in New Delhi, India. Going overland from Europe to Asia, passing several time zones, seeing many different cultures, living for months in a tent, being in the nature, breathing the air and experiencing the wonders of our mother earth, this, maybe, is going to be the trip of our lives. In any case it's our bike trip of 2001. We're on our way…

For a long time we couldn,t update our page. Actually it,s a miracle that we are still able to update at all because most of our stuff had been stolen in Syria. Our cameras, spare parts for bikes, our journals, glasses, contact lenses, clothes, etc. were gone. At first even our bikes were gone. (This is a long story). After a couple of strange events in Syria including an arrest by the military police we got to the border where we learned that the police had caught the thieves. One of the thieves had tried to sell our digital camera the very next day in his home town. We didn,t get all of our stuff back but quite a lot and we didn,t expect it to turn up at all anyway so we were glad for everything we got.

Ex-king wins Bulgaria poll
SOFIA, Bulgaria (CNN) The party of former Bulgarian king Simeon II wins the country's general election, promising to raise living standards and tackle corruption. Balkan TV correspondent Venelin Petkov told CNN that with 99 percent of ballots tallied national election commission figures showed the National Movement of Simeon II taking 43 percent. This provides a large margin against 18 percent for the Union of Democratic Forces coalition, which currently holds power. Low living standards, government corruption and lack of patience for more painful reform were credited for the strong showing of the National Movement for Simeon II's which was largely unknown two months ago. Petkov quoted further figures showing the coalition of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, a descendant of the Communist Party that ruled the country for more than 40 years, winning 17 percent of the vote. ALSO Elections may herald return of king The coalition representing the Rights and Freedoms Movement Party, which has the support of the ethnic Turkish population, was shown taking seven percent.

Bulgaria announces new Cabinet
SOFIA, Bulgaria Bulgaria's prime minister designate, former King Simeon II, has named businessmen rather than professional politicians in his Cabinet to tackle his country's woes. Simeon was the first ex-monarch to regain political power in post-communist eastern Europe after his National Movement for Simeon II (NMS) won a June 17 general election, one seat short of an outright majority. The new Bulgarian regime has pledged speedy reform giving themselves 800 days to improve people's lives as well as taking the country into NATO and the European Union, tackling corruption, speeding up reforms, boosting growth, cutting taxes and attracting foreign investors. The former king also acknowledged his coalition partner, the Turk Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), by appointing the first ethnic Turks to sit in a Bulgarian government. His government will have a Western-trained business profile with the top jobs of deputy prime minister and economy minister going to Nikolai Vassilev, a 31-year-old emerging markets analyst.
