    History
The Institute of Geography under the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1950. The 50 years of development within the system of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences it has gone through three periods of development, in accordance with the respective conditions and requirements of the social and economic situation in Bulgaria, making full use of its scientific potential. The period until 1970s was dominated by general scientific investigations in Bulgaria in the field of physical and economic geography. They reflect in two fundamental products published during this period: the monograph "Geography of Bulgaria" in two volumes, and the National Geographical Atlas. The third period started with the beginning of political and economic reforms in Bulgaria towards market economy (1989). It is marked by structural changes in the Institute, demanded by the new conditions, requiring integral geographical research. The new structure was designed to facilitate the integration of research efforts and to "open" the institute for collaboration with Bulgarian and foreign organizations working in the field of geography and regional development. The Institute of Geography is in charge of a large number of research projects involving the entire staff, incorporating 41 people, 22 of which are researchers. The research program of the Institute includes: research projects funded by the National Science Fund; surveys ordered by the Bulgarian Parliament, underlying its legislative work; ecological expert investigations and appraisals, including such funded by the PHARE program. The regular environmental observations and methodological guidelines, produced at the Institute of Geography, have resulted into the development and functioning of the first practical project of local ecological monitoring in this country, in the Assarel-Medet region, near Panagiurishte.

Bulgaria Forum ... Transnational Issue Introduction Bulgaria Background: The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with which it began accession negotiations in 2000. INTRODUCTION Bulgaria, a country in southeastern Europe, has rich resources of metallic and nonmetallic minerals, mainly iron ore and coal but also suffers from serious environmental issues as most of the rivers are getting polluted by the industries. Location of Bulgaria Bulgaria is bound on the north by Romania, on the east by the Black Sea, on the south by Turkey and Greece, and on the west by Serbia and Montenegro (formerly the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Physical Map of Bulgaria Over half of Bulgaria is made up of mountains. The Balkan Mountains cross the country from the northwestern corner to the Black Sea and the northern side of the Balkan Mountains slopes gradually to form the northern Bulgarian plateau, which ends at the Danube River. The central portion of the southern side of the range is bordered by a series of narrow plains. The southern part of the country has broad and irregular Rhodope Mountains, which form the boundary with Greece. At the western end of these mountains, in southwestern Bulgaria, are the Rila Mountains, which rise to a maximum elevation of 9,596 ft at Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans.
