Days of Russian Culture in Bulgaria
Days of Bulgarian Culture in the Russian Federation will be held in Moscow, Vladimir and Yaroslavl on September 29-October 3. They are dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Bulgaria's liberation from the Ottoman yoke, Russian Culture Minister Mikhail Shvydkoi told a press conference in Moscow on Monday.
The opening gala-concert of Bulgaria's Days will take place in the Bolshoi Theatre. Bulgarian and Russian Presidents Georgi Purvanov and Vladimir Putin will attend the concert.
On his part, Bulgarian Culture Minister Bozhidar Abrashev noted that the Culture Days symbolise the improvements in Russian-Bulgarian political and cultural relations. "Our cultures are very close. Culture is the nearest way to the people's heart. We tried to fill the week-long programme of the Days of Bulgarian Culture with most interesting and varied concerts and performances," he said.
According to the minister, two most famous folklore ensembles, four exhibitions and four films will be presented as part of the Days of Bulgarian Culture in the Russian Federation. Performances of the Ivan Vazov national theatre will be shown as well.

Bulgaria: Archeological Finds Reveal Thracian Civilization
By Askold Krushelnycky This year in Bulgaria has seen spectacular archaeological discoveries, which many experts believe will yield important information about the cultures which thrived in what is now Bulgaria during ancient times. RFE/RL correspondent Askold Krushelnycky talked about the finds with one of Bulgaria's leading archaeologists. Sofia, 4 December 2000 (RFE/RL) Over the course of the past summer, two separate sites in southern Bulgaria were opened up to rich archeological finds. Experts believe that they will shed light on a period when Thracian civilization which began around the beginning of the first millennium BC was at its peak in the fourth and fifth centuries BC, the time from which the newly discovered sites date.

Archaeological discoveries from that time have been made near Karlovo, in the region of the towns of Nova Zagora, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin, Sofia, Teteven, Troyan and in the Rhodope Mountains. The oldest gold treasure in the world, discovered near Varna, is dated to that time. In the second half of the 7th century, the Proto-Bulgarians - an ethnic community of Turkic origin - settled on the territory of the present-day Northeastern Bulgaria. In alliance with the Slavs they formed the Bulgarian State, which was recognised by the Byzantine Empire in 681 AD. Khan Asparouh stood at the head of that state and Pliska was made its capital.
