Impressions of Bulgaria
~ along the Black Sea coast / Nessebur

our tour August 2003 ~ picture links open new windows ~ O ur vacation spot was Svete Konstantin, a small town on the Black Sea in the vicinity of the exclusive seaside resort of Varna. We flew to Bulgaria with a TU (Tupolew), which was a special experience. The machine has 3 power units at its tail ( one on the left, one on the right and one on top) and we had our seats right in the centre of this hell - two hours booming! After we arrived at the hotel, a view out of our room on the 6th floor made us forget the strain and we enjoyed a fantastic panoramic view over the sea and the bay with its fine sandy white beaches. T B ulgaria is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula right on the Black Sea Coast, which has just 8,5 million inhabitants. Nevertheless a multitude of cultural historical treasures, unique in the world, bears witness to a great past in the course of which Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Osman conquerors ruled over the country for centuries and left behind their traces. But still Bulgaria has cultivated and preserved its original Slav culture. A mong the sights the mediaeval city of Nessebur is a jewel and a must. The 2500 years old city has been on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO since 1983. Located on a small peninsula of the Black Sea the delightful tourist spot yearly attracts a million visitors. The romantic place has cast a spell on us since we visited it for the first time in 1991 and we'll certainly return whenever we have a chance.

CULTURE BULGARIA
For thirteen centuries, Bulgaria - the cradle of Slav culture, the land of Orpheus and Spartacus has given the world men of great achievements, mysterious Thracian treasures and burial tombs, magnificent frescos and many brilliant examples of ancient applied arts. Bulgarian festivals and customs date back to ancient times when men tried to appease the natural elements and trembled before their power. Full of beauty, gaiety, mystical voices, fiery dances and brightly colored costumes - Bulgarian folklore has to be seen, felt and experienced! Fire dancing is the most ancient mysterious ritual - barefooted dancers performing on burning embers. This religious and mystical ritual for expelling illness, for health and fruitfulness is one that must be seen to believe it. The Festival of Roses is a lovely festival celebrated in the Rose Valley near the town of Kazanluk (at the foot of the Balkan Range) on the first weekend of June every year. The festival is a pageant of beauty in the unique Rose Valley. In the run-up of the event, a Queen Rose beauty contest is held in several rounds. Artists, actors, circus performers, writers and singers flock to Kazanluk at the start of June. The Bulgarian oleaginous rose yields 70 percent of the world's attar of roses used by every perfume company as an essential component of its products.

Over the centuries, Bulgarian culture has been influenced successively by Byzantine, Islamic, and Greek traditions. In recent times, Russian and Western influences have been added, forming the modern Bulgarian culture that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s. Cultural policies under communist rule, including strict censorship, enforced an official culture based on communist ideology.

Other good collections and studies of aspects of Bulgarian folk customs, rituals, songs, and costumes are: Assen Nikolov, Bulgarian Folklore (Cleveland: By the Author, 1983), which includes a discussion of proverbs and name origins. Stoyan Grenchev, The Wedding: Bulgarian Folk Customs and Rituals (Sofia: Septemvri, 1988) is richly illustrated as is Maria G. Veleva, Bulgarian Folk Costumes (Pittsburgh: Tamburitza Press, 1982), with detailed explanations of the techniques used in their making and descriptions of regional variations. The event was organized by the Agency on Tourism and took place in Bulgaria’s old capital Veliko Tarnovo. “This potential should be made the best of, he further pointed out. Tourist business in this country has flexibly fit new realities – we now have a special Bulgarian culture-and-history tourist product shaped by tour operators and all working in that branch. By the way the analyses of our Ministry show that the relative portion of cultural and historic trips in this country is increasing, reaching in 2004 nearly 12% of the general portion of incomes from that sphere. We expect more tour operators to include in their programmes and catalogues Bulgaria’s unique culture and historic sties.” According to Jean-Rene Etchagary, Deputy Mayor of the French town of Bayonne, actively cooperating with Veliko Tarnovo in the sphere of culture and tourism, Bulgaria is a relatively new and very interesting destination for those interested in culture tourism.

This fact has won her the title of most filmed young Bulgarian actress of the past year. Some of these films are yet to be shown to the broad public. Until now they could mainly be seen at film festivals. These titles are “Milla from Mars” which has already won several film awards at home and abroad and was the Bulgarian nomination for the Oscars; “Stolen Eyes”, “A Crazy Day” and “Toshko and Toshka”. Actually Vessela made a name for herself three years ago playing a dumb girl in the film “Fallen Leaf”. That film brought her the “Young Actress” award named after Bulgarian cinema legend Nevena Kokanova. For “Mila from Mars” Vessela Kazakova took the best actress award in last year’s edition of the “Golden Rose” festival for Bulgarian movies. “This film has given me a lot but has also taken away much, the actress explains. After the last day of shooting I was like broken into thousands of pieces. It all took about half a year. We started in January and the last shots were made on May 12. At that point something seemed to break in me, as if I left my soul there. On the other hand the awards that followed are only too pale a reflection of what the film has give to me. Mila and myself were constantly influencing one another all through,” says the actress.

Land of scenic splendour, history and culture
Bulgaria is an amazing combination of spectacular scenery and nature, fascinating history, and unique culture. It is a land of mountains, rich biodiversity, folk music and crafts, mountain villages, and an old-world way of life with a Mediterranean flavour. A trip to Bulgaria will leave you with unforgettable experiences and lifelong memories.
    Old-World Traditions:
The multifarious people that passed through Bulgaria's territory created a land of rich traditions. Vibrant folklore is seen in villages, in performances by world-renown song and dance troupes, and in pre-Christian pagan rituals. Bulgaria is known for its wonderful architecture, monasteries, wine, cuisine, and art. Natural Beauty and Diversity
Bulgaria has 7 major mountains ranges, and each offers its own unique spectacular scenery. Volcanic rock formations, natural arches, dramatic canyons, and numerous caves contribute to the breathtaking landscape. The Bayuvi Dupki - Djindjiritza Nature Reserve in Pirin National Park is famous for its centuries old coniferous forest, limestone formations and hundreds of glacier lakes. It has snowcapped peaks and rugged alpine landscapes. 30% of Bulgaria is covered with forest. Over 3500 plant species and numerous animal species are found in Bulgaria. More than 160 species of water birds live in the Sreburna Lake area, close to the Danube River. It is astounding that so much diversity lies in this tiny 110,912 sq. km /43,257 sq. mile territory.

v.2.5.5 General Information :: Culture Page 1 of 4 1 Prehistoric Culture One can get acquainted with the pre-historic culture of Bulgaria mainly through the exhibitions displayed at the Archaeological Museum and the National Museum of History in Sofia and through the exhibits in the local museums in Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Nova Zagora, Varna, Rousse, Veliko Tarnovo, Razgrad, Vidin, Bourgas, etc. The sights of particular interest include the famous Karanovska Mound near Nova Zagora, as well as the incredible drawings on the walls of the Magoura Cave (the Rabisha Cave). There are remains from Palaeolithic cultures in several caves in the Stara Planina Mountain and the Rhodope Mountains, while traces of Neolithic and Palaeolithic cultures by the sea are preserved in the areas of Cape Kaliakra to the north along the coast to the southern town of Ahtopol.
Throughout the country there are numerous remains from Thracian, Hellenic and Roman culture. Whole town sites have been preserved, restored and opened to public. Some of them are Augusta Trayana, Trimontsium, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Pautalia, Akre, Messembria, Apolonia and many others. Bulgarian museums abound in exhibits of the ancient everyday life, cult related and military items, statues, tombstones and monuments, masks, mosaics, statuettes of ancient gods, patrons of the home, and heroes. Under the capital city of Sofia have been excavated about 150, 000 square metres of ruins from the ancient city of Serdica. Almost every new building site in the centre of Sofia reveals some cultural layers from the Antiquity.
