It preserves the rugged spirit and remote wilderness of the American West. Here, in the ancient Guadalupe Mountains that tower so majestically into the Texas sky, a visitor can delight in grand views, diverse landscape, and small pleasures. Wallace Pratt, a petroleum geologist who was charmed by the beauty and geology of the Guadalupe, purchased land in McKittrick Canyon in the 1930's. In 1959, Pratt donated his land to the National Park Service. Additional land was purchased from J.C. Hunter, and in 1972, Guadalupe Mountains National Park was created by an act of congress. African-American troops have served in every major military conflict in American history. But it was during the Civil War that Black males were enlisted for widescale battle by the Union Army. Even though prejudice prevented them from being fully accepted, the soldiers fought bravely and over 33 thousand of the nearly 180 thousand men that enlisted lost their lives. These black soldiers composed 20 percent of the Army in the 1870s.

Colonel Charles "Chuck" Long of the The American Buffalo Soldiers Re-Enactors' Association leads the charge for Buffalo Soldiers Re-enactors Association Black troops who helped conquer the West supposedly were called "Buffalo Soldiers" because Native Americans thought their bushy hair resembled the coat of the bison. While often treated as footnotes to history, in fact, there were more black soldiers on the frontier than most people realize, and their contribution was major. Their faces simply do not show up in Western movies - or even most historic photographs. Black soldiers served long and well at many posts in the Arizona Territory, and not just at Fort Huachuca, which proudly celebrates their contributions.

    Mailbag Regarding Buffalo Soldiers
Mail about Project 21's protest of the name of the Film "Buffalo Soldiers": To whom it may concern,
I just read Michael King's comments on Townhall.org about the Congressional Black Caucus' silence regarding the film "Buffalo Soldiers.” I could not agree more and I am actively protesting this film. I am ready to stand outside of every movie theater to prevent people from patronizing this film. Below is my own protest paper to this film. I have sent it to a range of people. It is my hope that we will make a difference.
When this film is nationally released, if anyone in your organization would like to stand with me, I will be more than willing.
Once Again, the Unsung Heroes are Forgotten
On Friday, July 25th, Miramax released a film in LA and NYC called "Buffalo Soldiers." From all accounts, this film is a "black comedy" about soldiers at an Army base in Germany in the days leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The main character enlisted in the Army to avoid doing jail time and is running a black market business on the base, including heroin. Adapted from the Robert O’Connor book of the same title, this film is intended to be a satire of Army life. The soldiers in this film are often stoned, violent and unremorseful about their escapades. Jack Matthews of the Daily News writes, “the tone of Buffalo Soldiers is all over the place… more often sinister.” He also writes that “the underlying premise is that Army bases are a microcosm of the inner-city life, the expense-paid refuges of scoundrels.”

The following article derives from a paper the author delivered at the 1998 Conference of Army Historians in Bethesda, Maryland. Finding the middle, where the truth sometimes rests, requires you to know the edges. When it comes to responsibility for the victory of the United States Army on San Juan Heights, Cuba, on 1 July 1898, the edges are easy to find. On one side, there is the Teddy-centric view, first and most clearly expressed in the writings of Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment—the legendary Rough Riders. Roosevelt’s memoir of Cuba so emphasized his own role that Mr. Dooley, the barroom pundit created by humorist Peter Finley Dunne, said the book should have been called "Alone in Cuba." Roosevelt augmented his campaign of self-promotion by carrying along his personal publicist. Richard Harding Davis’ dispatches from the front, picked up by many newspapers and magazines, spread the word of TR’s heroics. They also followed a time-honored tradition. George Custer had taken a reporter on the 1874 expedition that discovered gold in the Black Hills, and Nelson Miles had had one along to record his exploits against the tribes of the southern plains. Now Davis, of the

The Black Cavalry troopers, called "Buffalo Soldiers" by their Indian adversaries, played a vital role in the settlement of the American West. Here is a selection of titles to help you learn more about their exploits.
Of course, the Indian Wars were not the first time that Black Troops fought together in organized units. Many black soldiers fought in the American Civil War. We are adding a new selection on African-American soldiers during the Civil War and as a bonus we have included books about the Black Cowboys in the American West.

Amazon.com: Baseball aficionados know John B. Holway as author of books about the Negro Leagues that rescued from obscurity many of the great black players who could not play in the segregated ranks of major league baseball. Here, Holway sets his sights on another group of heroes: the men of the "Tuskegee experiment"the effort to train black pilots during World War II. Many white officers believed the experiment would be a failure because blacks did not have the skills necessary to become pilots. But the Tuskegee Airmen proved them wrong, and black pilotsin particular those of the 332nd Squadron (the Red Tails of the title)established stellar records in combat. Holway quotes copiously from his interviews with black airmen, and the result is a stunning record of the heroism of black men in all but impossible circumstances

As Black History Month, February offers a perfectly appropriate opportunity to wax poetic about pioneers of the past, but according to former Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, keynote speaker at NIH's 2003 salute to African American history, employees should use the occasion for more than remembering. Continued... "Yes, I want you to reflect," she said. "But more than reflect, I want to bring four other 'Rs' onto your plate: I want you to retrench, I want you to rearm, I want you to replenish and then I want you to rejoice." Alexis Herman keynotes NIH's Black History Month program. sidebar Senior advisor to the NIH director Dr. Ruth Kirschstein (l) and NIH deputy director Dr. Raynard Kington welcome former Labor Secretary Herman. When Cathay Williams enlisted in the army, women were not allowed to serve as soldiers. So, Williams posed as a man and joined Thirty-Eighth Infantry. As a result, she became the first and the only known female Buffalo Soldier. Williams was born into slavery in Independence, Missouri in 1842. She worked as a house slave for William Johnson, a wealthy planter in Jefferson City, Missouri. She worked for him until his death. About the same time, the Civil War broke out and she was freed by Union soldiers.
