The BUFFALO HERD above Denver, CO
by Dawn Janov Calling kids...of all ages! Here's a great outing in the foothills about 30 minutes from Denver. Just off I-70 at Genesee Park, exit 254, lives a large herd of bison (buffalo). Part of the City of Denver Mountain Park system, the buffalo herd is fed every day. You can usually see them on either side of the freeway. Small parking lot adjacent to viewing area. In 1914, Denver bought seven buffalo from a small wild herd in Yellowstone Park for their newly purchased game preserve in the mountainous Genesee Park close to Denver, the start of the herd you see today. In the early 1800s, when people were pouring into the West by the droves, 30-60 million buffalo were roaming the plains west of the Mississippi. A combination of settlers and solders tried to eliminate the Native Americans from attacking their homes, forts and travelers by getting rid of their food supply. By the late 1890s, and even more reckless slaughter of buffalo by man for sport or fun, brought down the number of buffalo remaining on the plains to an estimate of only 500. Immediate action was then taken by the government and other agencies to preserve this American Heritage. Today, the estimate of about 1 million buffalo roam on private and public land in Canada and the United States. Buffalo or Bison? Common usage makes the word buffalo and bison interchangeable; however, the American Buffalo is more closely related to the European Bison or Wisent and the Canadian Woods Bison than it is the Water Buffalo of Asia or the Cape Buffalo of Africa. The scientific name, Bison-bison, belongs in the Bovidae family of mammals. You guessed it, cows!

The Licking Bison Site (39HN570):
An Early Archaic Bison Kill in Northwest South Dakota
By Michael Fosha
The 2000 field season drew to a close the current phase of investigations at the Licking Bison site (39HN570), an Early Archaic Bison kill, located in Harding County, South Dakota (Figure 1). The land is owned by Gary Licking of Buffalo, South Dakota. During the 1994-2000 field seasons volunteers from across the plains consisting of professional, avocational, and amateur archaeologists helped to excavate the site. The goal of the program was to preserve by excavation, that portion of the site that would be lost to erosion in the upcoming years. Figure 1 The investigations began during a period of time when the State Historical Society, Archaeological Research Center (SARC) was conducting some exploratory investigations in the northwest portion of the state. SDAS member Joe Nonnast showed the author a couple of points that he had collected from a location in Harding County. The points appeared to be Early Archaic side-notched (roughly 7000-5000 years before present) variety or possibly Late Prehistoric/Late Archaic Besant side/corner-notched points (2000-1500 years before present). Both styles are very similar in size and shape. While agreement was not necessarily reached as to whether the points were from the Early Archaic period or Late Prehistoric period, we decided to investigate the site more fully with a field visit. Upon arriving at the site, we found a light scatter of eroded bone and tooth enamel on a hard packed sandy surface with small amounts of bone extending from an eroded terrace scarp. A little trowelling exposed bison bone in a very good state of preservation in the terrace. The following year we returned with SDAS members to begin excavations at the site. We quickly found that the site was the remains of a bison kill site buried in an alluvial sand deposit. Based upon the geomorphic setting, we assumed that the site was a Late Prehistoric Besant Complex kill (Albanese 1997, Fosha 1995, 1996). Later with radiocarbon dates we found this to be in error and that the site does indeed date to the Early Archaic Period.

SEND THIS PAGE TO A FRIEND Buffalo / Bison Bison in the Hayden Valley American Buffalo (Bison) It is believed that buffalo, or bison, crossed over a land bridge that once connected the Asian and North American continents. Through the centuries buffalo slowly moved southward, eventually reaching as far south as Mexico and as far east as the Atlantic Coast, extending south to Florida. But the largest herds were found on the plains and prairies from the Rocky Mountains east to the Mississippi River, and from Great Slave Lake in Canada to Texas. Because the great herds were nearly gone before any organized attempts were made to survey populations, we may never know just how many buffalo once roamed North America, although estimates range from 30 to 75 million. "The moving multitude...darkened the whole plains," wrote Lewis and Clark, who encountered a herd at South Dakota's White River in 1806.
By 1800, the small buffalo herds east of the Mississippi River were gone. Buffalo may have been killed to protect livestock and farmlands in that region. With westward expansion of the American frontier, systematic reduction of the plains herds began around 1830, when buffalo hunting became the chief industry of the plains.

Buffalo Bisons History

For residents of Buffalo and the Niagara Frontier, hockey has become one and the same with winter, ice, skates, sticks, pucks, body checks, fights, and awesome goalie saves. Most of them have grown up cheering for modern greats like Gilbert Perreault, Pat Lafontaine and Dominik Hasek of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. However, hockey has been around in Buffalo since the turn of the century. This website honors the men who played for those early teams: the Buffalo Bisons and Buffalo Majors hockey clubs. The first public demonstration of an ice hockey game was on March 3, 1875 in Montreal. The game soon found its way west throughout Canada and before the end of the nineteenth century the concept had founds its way to the United States of America and across the Atlantic to Europe. As Hockey spread across the continent, there was a noticeable increase in the number of organized hockey leagues. By 1917, the National Hockey Association (NHA) was re-organized and eventually led the birth of the National Hockey League. Hockey prospered in the 1920s as the post World War I boom engulfed North America. In 1924 the NHL expanded and firmly established itself as the premier professional hockey league. A proliferation of minor leagues also sprang up. These leagues showcased young men with dreams of breaking into the big league, and tired veterans, yearning for one more chance at glory.
