At the beginning of the nineteenth century bison roamed freely, with as many as thirty million in population. Tragically, by the beginning of the twentieth century, merely one thousand were at roam. How did buffalo so rapidly become an endangered species? Other specialists research tactics to save the buffalo and to repopulate the land with their species. Therefore, branching off of this larger group are researchers concerned with positive and the negative causes and effects of buffalo in the Great Plains.
With its great size, vast numbers, and wide distribution, the buffalo was in sheer mass the largest game species ever known to mankind, and it exerted a profound influence on man from his first arrival in North America until the destruction of the herds in the late nineteenth century. (2) Andrew Isenberg also considered Euro-Americans a contributing factor to the decline of buffalo. Isenberg considers environmental circumstances to be part of the problem as well: “Because, a host of economic, cultural, and ecological factors herded the bison toward their near extinction” (1). Isenberg and Flores agree that multiple contributions caused the buffalos near extinction. They both consider environmental effects and Euro-American hunters to be contributing factors:

It is estimated that there were sixty million buffalo in all of North America before Europeans came to this continent. The original range of the buffalo was from Northern Canada and Alaska down to Mexico and Florida and over to the Atlantic Ocean. It has been estimated that there were originally up to five million buffalo East of the Mississippi River. The great slaughter of buffalo intensified in the years from 1865 to 1883. In 1895, the total known buffalo left in the world was less than 1000. In 1905, the American Bison Society was founded to help save the buffalo from extinction. Today, the National Bison Association has over 2,000 members who are mostly persons who are raising buffalo in public or private herds. You can contact the National Bison Association at www.nbabison.org for more information. The American buffalo has long been a symbol of America. In 1913 the U.S. Treasury coined the buffalo nickel. The man who designed the coin, James Earle Fraser, said that in his search to fulfill his objective to produce a coin which was truly American he "found no motif within the bounties of the United States so distinctive as the American Buffalo." Many people helped save the buffalo from extinction including some ranchers who captured wild buffalo calves and started some private buffalo herds. They included men such as Charles Goodnight, a Texas rancher, who captured some wild buffalo calves in 1866.

Awards I won Aboriginal People Canada Page (Main) Provinces ... View Guest Book The decimation of the Plains Buffalo during the late 1800s brought this magnificent animal to the brink of extinction. Of all the quadrupeds that have lived upon the earth, no other species has ever numbered as many as the American bison. Even in South Central Africa, which has always had great herds of game, it is probable that all its quadrupeds taken together on an equal area would never have equaled the total number of buffalo on the plains of North America. the most vivid picture ever afforded of the former abundance of buffalo is that given by Col. R. I. Dodge in his "Plains of the Great West," p. 120, et seq.: "The great herd on the Arkansas through which I passed could not have averaged, at rest, over fifteen or twenty individuals to the acre, but was, from my own observation, not less than 25 miles wide, and from reports of hunters and others it was about five days in passing a given point, or not less than 50 miles deep. From the top of Pawnee Rock I could see from 6 to 10 miles in almost every direction. This whole vast space was covered with buffalo, looking at a distance like one compact mass, the visual angle not permitting the ground to be seen. I have seen such a sight a great number of times, but never on so large a scale. The advancing multitude had been at all points 50 miles in length (as it was known to have been in some places at least) by 25 miles in width, and still averaged fifteen head to the acre of ground, it would have contained the enormous number of 12,000,000 head."

Neander97 / Historical Trivia: How many buffalo (bison) once roamed the prairies, plains, and woodlands of North America? That there were once millions is an undisputed fact, but how many millions? Some sources estimate as many as seventy million, some make a more conservative guess and say only twenty million. Neander97's Historical Trivia
" More Stuff To Clutter-Up Cyberspace " neander97 @yahoo.com Buffalo Vignettes ANCESTORS It was in southern and eastern Asia at the end of the Pliocene epoch that the first known ancestors of the buffalo* appeared. Although smaller and slighter in stature than its present day progeny, this ancestral buffalo bore all the characteristics found in the modern genus Bison . During the next million or so years in the period known as the Pleistocene epoch or the Ice Agebison grew in size, migrating from central Asia east to Siberia and west into Europe. Later in the Pleistocene a new form of bison, the steppe wisent , made its appearance. Although it spread forth to occupy traditional bison habitat in the Old World, the steppe wisent also crossed Beringia, the Bering Strait land bridge, moving from Siberia into the New Worldthe buffalo had arrived in North America. Once in America, the steppe wisent evolved into new forms to exploit its new environment. One offspring of the steppe wisent

W ILD IDEA BUFFALO COMPANY supplies the highest quality, best tasting buffalo meat in the world. The superior tenderness and flavor comes from the way it is raised: no hormones, no antibiotics, no feedlots. Wild Idea sells only buffalo meat produced on native grasses and culled humanely. We process the best quality two year old animals and age the meat to perfection. That's why it's the best. We began in 1997 with the goal of producing the finest tasting and healthiest red meat money can buy. We soon found that there were added bonuses to our way of raising and handling buffalo.
It turns out that restoring buffalo to the Great Plains improves the bio-diversity of wild plants and animals, provides the human residents of the Great Plains an alternative to present ranching models and provides Americans an alternative to the questionable red meats available in stores. THE DAKOTA TERRITORY BUFFALO ASSOCIATION
"The Producer's Association"
Based in Rapid City, SD, the heart of buffalo country, the Dakota Territory Buffalo Association was formed in 1996 by a group of buffalo producers from a twelve state area and two Canadian provinces.
The DTBA, as the organization is commonly referred to, was formed to promote and educate the public about the growing buffalo industry. Over the years, the DTBA has grown to become a leading regional buffalo organization. The slogan used by the DTBA is "The Producer's Association" to reflect the fact that the association belongs to, and works for, the producers who make up the membership.
One of the unique features about the association is that it does go beyond state boundaries and includes an ever-widening region. While many of the state and regional buffalo organizations are focused mainly in one state, the DTBA has managed to not limit itself to being a South Dakota organization. Members come from across the country and Canada.
The DTBA holds its annual Winter Conference every January in Rapid City, SD. In conjunction with the event, the group also hosts the Black Hills Buffalo Classic Show and Sale. This event has grown to be a very popular one with producers and continues to bring in top quality animals from around the country.

96. Great Range Brand Bison
The scientific name is really bison , but buffalo is more familiar. We referto them as bison but, prefer to call the meat buffalo in the marketplace.
http://www.greatrangebison.com/facts.html
1. What is the difference between Buffalo and Bison?
The scientific name is really "Bison", but "Buffalo" is more familiar. We refer to them as Bison but, prefer to call the meat Buffalo in the marketplace. It is more familiar to more people, but the names are interchangeable.
2. Are Bison an endangered species?
3. What has led to the return of the Bison?
Private ranchers are the reason. Because the industry is commercially viable, ranchers are willing to raise Bison in large numbers. Otherwise this would be a hobby for a few ranchers and there would be a few in zoos. Actually, eating the meat will assure that the herd will continue to grow and regain its prominence on the plains and in our diets. Furthermore, surplus bulls 18-28 months of age are harvested for meat, while most females are kept to build the herd.
4. Is the federal government involved in the commercial Bison industry?
No, the government is not involved. The regulations are the same as for beef cattle. The government does control the bison herd at Yellowstone National Park, but none of those animals are utilized in the commercial meat industry.
5. Is the meat gamy?
