    Buffalo - Bison
Recent News Links Bison once roamed from Canada to Mexico, grazing the great plains and frequenting the mountain areas of the North American continent. Their number being so great that the early explorers could not count them, describing them as "number-numberless," and "the country was one black robe" and the "plains were black and appeared as if in motion" with the herds of bison. The most commonly used estimate of their former numbers is approximately 60 million. A strong relationship between the human and the bison has existed for thousand of years. Bison were the center of life for the Plains Tribes of Native Americans, providing them with food, shelter, clothing and spiritual inspiration. Legend tells "the Great Spirit brought the pipe to the people. She came as a young woman wearing a white buckskin dress and moccasins. After the Great Spirit presented the pipe to the people and explained the significance of that pipe, she left the teepee as a white bison calf." The near extermination of the American Bison did not occur just in a few short violent years. The fur trade, which began in the 1600s, initially focused on beaver but then demanded that bison (buffalo) robes be shipped to Europe. By the early 1800s, trade in buffalo robes and buffalo tongues significantly increased and caused approximately 200,000 bison kills annually on the plains. The 1830s to 1860s were the four decades in which most of the slaughter of bison occurred. Wagon load after wagon load of robes, tongues and, occasionally, selected cuts of bison meat, moved east. Soon, collection and shipping of bison bones to eastern cities where they ground up for use as phosphorous fertilizer or bone char became common. The arrival of the railroads further exacerbated herd conditions for the bison and by the early 1880s there were only a few free-ranging bison.

Interior Department ponders how to handle Yellowstone bison herd
The endangered American bison in Yellowstone National Park
    September 26, 1998
Web posted at: 9:26 p.m. EDT (0126 GMT) From Correspondent Don Knapp WEST YELLOWSTONE, Montana (CNN) The U.S. Department of the Interior is wrestling with how to protect the endangered American bison in Yellowstone National Park without threatening cattle herds near the park with brucellosis, a disease that causes cows to abort their calves. Bison, once abundant in Yellowstone and throughout the West, were hunted nearly to extinction by the turn of the 20th century. Only 23 animals in the Yellowstone herd survived. But through conservation, and transplants of animals from other herds, the bison population in Yellowstone rose to more than 3,500 by 1996. Then came that winter's killing snows, a natural process that Park Service officials believed would cull the herd. But the bison, driven by hunger to find food, followed paths out of the park on roads groomed for recreational snowmobilers.

American Buffalo (Bison bison) It is believed that buffalo, or bison, crossed over a land bridge that once connected the Asian and North American continents. Through the centuries buffalo slowly moved southward, eventually reaching as far south as Mexico and as far east as the Atlantic Coast, extending south to Florida. But the largest herds were found on the plains and prairies from the Rocky Mountains east to the Mississippi River, and from Great Slave Lake in Canada to Texas. Because the great herds were nearly gone before any organized attempts were made to survey populations, we may never know just how many buffalo once roamed North America, although estimates range from 30 to 75 million. "The moving multitude...darkened the whole plains," wrote Lewis and Clark, who encountered a herd at South Dakota's White River in 1806 By 1800, the small buffalo herds east of the Mississippi River were gone. Buffalo may have been killed to protect livestock and farmlands in that region. With westward expansion of the American frontier, systematic reduction of the plains herds began around 1830, when buffalo hunting became the chief industry of the plains.

Wolves and Buffalo: The Last Frontier Home
Introduction Back to the Wild Jeff Turner: In His Own Words Resources An adult wood buffalo. The buffalo, a uniquely American animal and a symbol of the plains, almost did not survive the nineteenth century. As the American West was cleared for farming, new towns, and the railway system, hunters killed millions of these animals, which once ranged throughout the West. In the entire United States, only a single herd survived the slaughter. Every buffalo living in this country today is descended from this herd. The buffalo in Canada fared better. Wood buffalo ( Bison bison athabascae ) are close relatives of the United States' plains buffalo ( Bison bison ), but larger and with darker coats. A significant number of Canadian wood buffalo survived, and the descendants of the herd remain wild, thanks to an 1893 law prohibiting buffalo hunting in Canada. So when wildlife filmmakers Jeff and Sue Turner wanted to make a documentary about wild buffalo, they headed to Canada's Northwest Territory. There, in Wood Buffalo National Park , lives the only bison herd in the world that has always been wild. The Turners' film, WOLVES AND BUFFALO: THE LAST FRONTIER, seen on NATURE, takes the viewer into a world where these two animals natural enemies since the beginning of time live out their lives as they have done for centuries, undisturbed by humans.
