Return of the Buffalo
From near extinction to nutritional distinction Ruthlessly hunted, primarily for it's hide, by 1885 the total number of Buffalo had been reduced from tens of millions to about 1000. Fortunately, the outcries of private citizens and organized groups were heeded, and this magnificent beast was spared annihilation. The value of this wholesome meat, which sustained native Americans for centuries, has only recently been discovered. Modern analysis has uncovered some amazing facts about the nutritional qualities of Bison. Simply stated, Bison contains less of what we do not need (fat, calories and cholesterol) and more of what we we do need (iron, protein and fatty acids). Chemical free and naturally delicious it is truly the healthy red meat everyone can enjoy. It has been found that some people who are allergic to other meats are able to eat Buffalo. But the really good news is the taste! Many people say Bison is the most flavorful meat they have ever tasted... with a sweeter and richer flavor than beef.

Theodore Roosevelt - 1890s ""...its toughness and hardy endurance fitted it to contend with purely natural forces...to resist cold and wintery blasts or the heat of the thirsty summer, to wander away to new pastures, to plunge over the broken ground, and to plow its way through snow drifts or quagmires."" Theodore Roosevelt The buffalo, Bison bison , is the largest mammal on the North American continent. This magnificent creature, which is a member of the Bovidae, or cow family, was given a common name by the early French explorers who called them "les boeufs," meaning oxen. Throughout the years, the name went through several changes from "buffle" to "buffelo" and finally to its present "buffalo." Bison is the correct scientific and common name, but buffalo has been used and accepted for many years. American Indians have also referred to these powerful animals as "tatanka." The ancestors of the American bison have been traced by their fossilized bones and are thought to have originated in southern Asia during the Pliocene epoch, some 400,000 years ago. The ancient bison was much larger than the present-day animal and ranged throughout the northern hemisphere. Paleontologists have learned that during its long history, the bison went through many changes. At one point in its evolution, a prehistoric bison

American buffalo, ( Bison bison
It is believed that buffalo, or bison, crossed over a land bridge that once connected the Asian and North American continents. Through the centuries buffalo slowly moved southward, eventually reaching as far south as Mexico and as far east as the Atlantic Coast, extending south to Florida. But the largest herds were found on the plains and prairies from the Rocky Mountains east to the Mississippi River, and from Great Slave Lake in Canada to Texas. Because the great herds were nearly gone before any organized attempts were made to survey populations, we may never know just how many buffalo once roamed North America, although estimates range from 30 to 75 million. "The moving multitude...darkened the whole plains," wrote Lewis and Clark, who encountered a herd at South Dakota's White River in 1806. Although the buffalo's size and color, which ranges from light to dark brown, vary in different areas of the country, experts generally agree that all American buffalo belong to the same species. The differences in appearance probably result from the variety of environments in which they live. Like their close relatives, domestic cattle and sheep, buffalo are cloven-hooved. Both males and females have a single set of hollow, curved horns. The male buffalo, called bulls, are immense, often weighing a ton or more and standing 5 to 6 feet high at the shoulders. The huge head and great hump covered with dark brown wooly hair contrast sharply with the relatively small hips. The females, or cows, are not as massive. Despite their great size and bulkiness, buffalo have amazing mobility, speed, and agility, and are able to sprint at speeds of up to 30 mph.

Elk Mountain Ranch is a wonderland of wild spaces and wildlife places. It teems with herds of Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer and Pronghorn Antelope, which roam the ranch freely. A herd of 600 American buffalo (bison) are confined to one part of the ranch, which exceeds the size of the city of San Francisco. Every fall during September, October and November, guided big game hunts are conducted for our clients.
From its open prairies to its mountain summit of 11,200-feet, the ranch is a wildlife paradise. Bald eagles and golden eagles hunt for prey while fishermen at one of our six stocked lakes catch various kinds of fighting trout, including cutthroat, rainbows and browns. Day trips to the nearby North Platte and Medicine Bow Rivers are conducted by our guides, so the fishermen can enjoy both stillwater and blue ribbon fisheries.

I n the spring of 1868, the Kansas Pacific Railroad sponsored a contest between two of their employees. Their names were Bill Comstock and Bill Cody, though both were nicknamed "Buffalo Bill".
After an eight hour hunt that began near Sheridan, Kansas (west of present-day Oakley), the "true" Buffalo Bill was named. Bill Cody had killed 69 buffalo, while Bill Comstock killed 46. Buffalo Bill Cody was on his way to becoming a legendary figure of the Old West.
Nearly 140 years after Buffalo Bill's historic hunt, buffalo still inhabit the Kansas prairies. We offer the opportunity to hunt American Bison in the same hills and ravines that Comstock and Cody hunted on, as did the Southern Cheyenne before them.
All of our hunts take place in the Smokey Hill River Basin in Logan County, Kansas. Our buffalo hunts guarantee a bull ranging in size from 1700 to 2300 lbs. After the kill, we transport the animal to a local packing plant for you. A taxadermist is also available for your animal.
In addition to offering trophy buffalo hunts, we also offer elk hunts. For more information on either type of hunt, please select a link from above.

Trophy Buffalo Hunts!
The vast brown sea of thundering buffalo evaporated with westward settlement. An estimated forty million American bison were reduced to less than 500 by 1889.But thanks to ranchers, private groups and legislation, we celebrate over 350,000 bison in North America today!  This revitalization now allows for the exciting sport hunting of trophy bulls that have been retired from breeding herds.
These are fair chase hunts on over 62,000 unfenced acres of prime, native bison habitat in scenic Southern Colorado.  You’ll likely encounter pronghorn antelope, wild horses and mule deer while hunting.  If time allows, a visit to the Indian ruins is certainly worthwhile.  Due to the expansive, rugged terrain, our hunts are on horseback or utilize a four-wheel drive vehicle for locating your bull, with the final stalk being on foot.  All hunts are fully guided with our experienced guides carrying a back-up rifle should an aggressive bull elect to charge.
These massive Lords of the Prairie are amazingly quick and agile! When you combine their power with a fiery temper, they command every hunter’s respect, making for a majestic trophy and memorable hunt. Thousand Hills Bison Ranch trophy bulls are not culls from our breeding herd. They are truly fine trophy bulls, each one selected for his size, cape, horn length and base diameter. All of our bulls have made the SCI Record Book! Most bulls will tip the scales around 2,000 pounds. Such qualifications are seldom found in young bulls, thus our bulls range from 6 to 10 years old.
