Step by step guide to budgeting
Step 1: Why a budget? Step 2: Gathering information Step 3: Making it work Step 4: How budgets fail Step 1: Why a budget? What you'll learn in this step: Calculating your budget can help you work out whether you need to increase your income or reduce your spending.
What are budgets?
Budgets are like your own personal small business statements. They are the sum of your incomes (wages, salary, dividends, interest, rentals, pensions and so on) minus the sum of your expenses. What you are left with is your disposable income. If when you work out your budget, you discover your outgoings are greater than your incomings, you need to increase your income or reduce your spending.
Why budget?
A budget lets you know if you are living within your means. If you're spending more than you're earning, you'll be going backwards and have little to show from the average $4 million you can be expected to earn during your working lifetime. But a budget also can set you on the road to saving for something special like a holiday or a car – or building an investment portfolio. A budget is not a millstone; it's a tool to help you manage your finances.

    Budgeting Guide:
Where Does All My Money Go?
    Having trouble making ends meet?
Like to know how much money you have to live on and where it all goes?
The following information should assist you to:
    • Understand the principles of budgeting; Construct a budget plan; Save money on your weekly commitment; Shop smarter; Cook and eat wisely; Maintain a clean house the cheap and environmentally friendly way; Explore avenues to increase your weekly income;
    The Principles Of Budgeting:
It is absolutely essential that you work out a budget for yourself. Begin by making a list of everything you currently spend your money on (down to the last dollar!). (See Budget Plan This should give you an idea of where your scarce dollars go and it may also give you some ideas on where you can easily save on expenses. It is then advisable for you to record your actual expenses every day for 4-6 weeks to see whether your actual expenditure does in fact match your budgeted expenses. Then examine any difference between your actual expenditure and your budget and make adjustment/s to your budget as appropriate.

    Budgeting: The Basics and Beyond
Kathy Prochaska-Cue, Extension Family Economics and Management Specialist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Budgeting is a word which usually gets negative reactions from people. But, a budget can help you use the money you have more effectively. A budget is a financial plan for spending; not a bookkeeping chore of keeping track of every penny.
    The Budgeting Process
Budgeting, a management process, follows these steps:
  • Communicating among family members.
  • Considering personal or family situation.
  • Setting goals.
  • Estimating income.
  • Estimating expenses.
  • Balancing the budget.
  • Putting budget into action.
  • Adjusting budget as necessary.
  • Use for future planning.
    Communication
The first step is communication with all family members. If single, this involves honest thinking and communicating with yourself. Studies have shown there is considerably less argument in marriages where both spouses share in making financial decisions and where they openly communicate with the children about the financial situation. Money is a common problem for people. When family members have different values and attitudes about spending and saving money, or when people strive for unrealistic goals, there is potential conflict. When people don't "talk things out," even the most workable spending plan may not work. Communication isn't always easy, but it is important. Generally, the more open the communication about finances, the better the quality of the financial decisions.
