James Buchanan
JAMES BUCHANAN
THE FIFTEENTH PRESIDENT.
THE MAN FROM WHEATLAND. In 1783, the year in which the American Revolution ended, James Buchanan, a young Scotch-Irish farmer from the County of Donegal, landed in Philadelphia. He had come to make his home in the land of promise beyond the seas. After looking around him for a good location, he settled at a place with the queer name of Stony Butter, "in a mountain gorge at the foot of the eastern ridge of the Alleghenies." Here he got a position in a store, and did so well that in five years he had a store of his own—and a wife, too, for he got married that year. In 1791, on April 23d, his first son was born, and was given his own name, that of James Buchanan. It was a name that he would make widely and well known. Young James was a boy of promise and a good student. At fourteen he was ready to enter Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He graduated at the head of his class. Then he studied law, and in 1812, when he was twenty-one years old, was admitted to the bar. In 1814 there came an exciting time, when the British plundered and burned Washington. The people were furious when they heard of it. A great meeting was held at Lancaster, in Pennsylvania, and a young lawyer, who had never made a public speech, now burst out in an address full of fire and patriotic spirit. His name was James Buchanan. As soon as he was done speaking he volunteered in a company that was organized on the spot. They got out their horses, called themselves dragoons, and rode away for Baltimore; but the British were gone before they got there, and they were discharged with honor.

American President James Buchanan, 1791-1868
James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States was distinguished as the only bachelor to serve as Chief Executive and was faulted for permitting the secession of the southern states precipitating the Civil War. Buchanan died June 1st, 1868, the end of his presidential term closing his 47 year career in politics. Born April 23rd, 1791 outside of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, James Buchanan was the son of Irish immigrants James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan. The senior Buchanan prospered as a mechantile owner and sent his son to Dickinson College of Carlisle and for private law study in Lancaster, where he passed the Pennsylvania bar in 1812. As a young attorney, Buchanan operated a successful law practice and was engaged to Anne C. Coleman, a daughter of one of the state's wealthiest families. In 1819 the long Coleman-Buchanan engagement was terminated, by which and for what reason continually open to speculation, as was Miss Coleman's death the same week by possible suicide. James Buchanan never married, but took his young niece Harriet Lane as a ward when she was orphaned by his only sister.

Inaugural Address
EDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 1857 The Democratic Party chose another candidate instead of their incumbent President when they nominated James Buchanan at the national convention. Since the Jackson Administration, he had a distinguished career as a Senator, Congressman, Cabinet officer, and ambassador. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Roger Taney on the East Portico of the Capitol. A parade had preceded the ceremony at the Capitol, and an inaugural ball was held that evening for 6,000 celebrants in a specially built hall on Judiciary Square.
Fellow-Citizens: I appear before you this day to take the solemn oath "that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." In entering upon this great office I must humbly invoke the God of our fathers for wisdom and firmness to execute its high and responsible duties in such a manner as to restore harmony and ancient friendship among the people of the several States and to preserve our free institutions throughout many generations. Convinced that I owe my election to the inherent love for the Constitution and the Union which still animates the hearts of the American people, let me earnestly ask their powerful support in sustaining all just measures calculated to perpetuate these, the richest political blessings which Heaven has ever bestowed upon any nation. Having determined not to become a candidate for reelection, I shall have no motive to influence my conduct in administering the Government except the desire ably and faithfully to serve my country and to live in grateful memory of my countrymen.

Fun Fact: James Buchanan was certainly a good host. When England's Prince of Wales came to visit in the fall of 1860, so many guests came with him, it's said the president slept in the hallway! Fast Fact: James Buchanan groped for compromise as the South advanced toward secession. Biography: Tall, stately, stiffly formal in the high stock he wore around his jowls, James Buchanan was the only President who never married. Presiding over a rapidly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time. Relying on constitutional doctrines to close the widening rift over slavery, he failed to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments which favored the South. Nor could he realize how sectionalism had realigned political parties: the Democrats split; the Whigs were destroyed, giving rise to the Republicans. Born into a well-to-do Pennsylvania family in 1791, Buchanan, a graduate of

    BUCHANAN, JAMES
, fifteenth president of the United States. Born in Pennsylvania of prosperous Scotch-Irish parents, Buchanan graduated from Dickinson College and became a highly successful lawyer. He began his political career as a Federalist, and after serving in the Pennsylvania legislature, he was elected to Congress in 1820. When the Federalist party collapsed, he joined the Andrew Jackson bandwagon and became an important Democratic leader in Congress. After a brief stint as minister to Russia, he was elected in 1834 to the Senate, where he served for a decade. Plodding and unimaginative, he was a loyal party man who strongly sympathized with the South on the slavery issue. In 1844 he helped carry Pennsylvania for James K. Polk and was rewarded by being named secretary of state. Overriding Buchanan's ingrained caution, Polk assumed the dominant role in shaping foreign policy, although Buchanan's studious habits and tact made him a useful subordinate in handling the Texas and Oregon controversies. He pushed the administration's unsuccessful effort to acquire Cuba, a goal he reaffirmed in the notorious Ostend Manifesto (1854). After unsuccessful bids for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1848 and 1852, he accepted an appointment in 1853 as minister to Britain. Since he was out of the country, he was not associated with the Kansas-Nebraska Act or the ensuing turmoil in Kansas, a fact that helped him win the Democratic presidential nomination in 1856. With strong support from the South, he was elected in November.

Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

In 1971 President Richard Nixon made a proclamation. From that year forward, Presidents' Day, commemorating the birthdays of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would be celebrated on the third Monday of February every year, and would now be a day to honor all past presidents of the United States of America. Before President Nixon's decision, Abraham Lincoln's birth date was a federal holiday on February 12, and February 22 was a federal holidays to celebrate George Washington's birthday.
