Died : June 1, 1868, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania Buried : Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Pennsylvania Consulting Editor William Cooper, Louisiana State University Biography: A Life in Brief In the 1850s, the question of slavery divided the United States. Hopes ran high that the new President, "Old Buck," might be the man to avert national crisis. He failed entirely. During his administration, the Union broke apart, and when he left office, civil war threatened. James Buchanan was the son of Irish immigrants who had made a successful life for themselves as merchants in rural Pennsylvania. The Buchanans could afford to send James to good schools, and after graduating with honors from Dickinson College, James Buchanan studied law. His legal and political careers moved forward together. Becoming a successful attorney, he advanced from state legislator to national figure, including membership in both houses of Congress, ambassadorships, and a cabinet post. The ambitious Buchanan had his sights on the presidency for many years before he actually attained the office. He tried for the White House in 1844, 1848, and 1852 before finally achieving his goal in 1856.

64. William Rufus De Vane King ~ Gay Veep
William Rufus King, Vice president of the United States and homosexual lover of president james buchanan.
http://www.geocities.com/boybluetoo/rufey.html
William Rufus de Vane King
Much of American history has been suppressed, especially the scandalous parts . Because boyblue considers those the only parts worth knowing, he feels duty bound to set the record straight...well, sort of straight. You may call it smut. boyblue considers it La History, like the story of the decades long love affair of Prez James Buchanan and a future Veep, William Rufus de Vane King, the queen of Alabama. Now we're not talking just good buddies here, sweetie, we're talking major humping for twenty years.
This ultimate power duo would have done it in the Lincoln bed but Abe hadn't moved in yet. He was still out in Illinois chopping logs and sleeping every night with John Speed, his knock out lawyer buddy.
Tuberculosis whisked away the dearly beloved Veep before Ol' Bucky, as Jamie Buchanan was known, took over the White House. So the prez never got to carry his truly beloved and the future Veep across the threshhold up to the legendary Lincoln bedroom as the prototypal couple for Rhett and Scahlett. Never mind that the Lincoln bedroom didn't exist yet. Some other knowledgeable purveyors of smut believe that when Ol' Bucky handed the house keys over to Abe Lincoln when he moved out of the White House that it was one queen turning over the keys to another. Of course boyblue believes that too. He makes it an ironclad rule to believe all the dirt about everybody. It's simply the only way to monger scandal reliably.

United Church of Christ Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

His Presidency: When South Carolina seceded from the Union and six more states followed, Buchanan wanted to keep the rest of the slave states loyal to the Union.
