"President James Buchanan" remains the definitive biography of our 15th President. Instead of simply rehashing the tired and often unfair criticism of Buchanan as "the worst President of the United States", Klein relies upon a wealth of primary source material to present a complex and fascinating man. Instead of being charactered as an inept failure, Buchanan comes across as an accomplished statesman who was dedicated to the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law who was caught in a "no win" situation as President. In seeking a compromise solution to avoid the impending holocaust of the Civil War when a compromise solution was probably no longer possible, Buchanan appear as a tragic figure more thasn as an abysmal failure. Kleins book is extremely well researched and insightful and is highly recommended to all those seeking to gain a greater understanding of our 15th President and the turbulent years before the Civil War.

James Buchanan
15th President of the United States

President Buchanan was a prominent figure in American political life for nearly half a century, holding some of the nation's highest offices. As president he played a role in the split that developed in his own Democratic Party. The split allowed the election of Republican Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. Young James received an academy education and attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., graduating in 1809. He then studied law in Lancaster, where he began practice in 1813. Although a Federalist in political sympathies, he supported the prosecution of the War of 1812 and participated as a volunteer in the defense of Baltimore.
After serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1814-16), Buchanan devoted attention to his law practice, which soon prospered. In 1819 he became engaged to Ann Coleman, daughter of a wealthy Lancaster iron manufacturer, but as a result of a misunderstanding the engagement was ended. Her sudden death shortly thereafter left Buchanan desolate. He never married.
In 1820, Buchanan was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. With the collapse of the Federalist party, he supported Andrew Jackson for the presidency. In the late 1820s he emerged as the leader of the Amalgamation party, the dominant faction of Pennsylvania Jacksonians.

Pastor Herrell is a member of Christian Identity whose writings end up on scores of hate and racist websites. He stated very clearly what he really hates: "freedom of individuals, tolerance and generosity toward all people, and equality of people of all races, religions, and beliefs." This well describes most Deists, Jews, Unitarians, and some Christians. He hates the very people his idol Hitler also hated. He is just another extreme-right mental case. These kinds of conspiracy theories, paranoia, and lies flood the Internet "mind-snaring" mainly Christian fundamentalists that have been taught all their lives to abandon reason and just follow. Note the list of "Jews" he presents. See Why Do Some People Hate Freemasonry?
Dogma of Christian Identity

History of Christian Identity
Deist Masons are Jewish
by Pastor V.S. Herrell Few white people in America are aware of the truth behind the Masons. Some may be perceptive enough to recognize Masonic symbols on license plates, cars, tombstones, etc., but they may not realize the type of people who are Masons or what Freemasonry is all about. Even less realize that Freemasonry is really just a code name for Judaism. Many will say that it is an organization founded in Christian principles, but this is far from the truth. In fact, the basic tenet of Freemasonry is anti-Christian, promoting "freedom of individuals, tolerance and generosity toward all people, and equality of people of all races, religions, and beliefs," as one Jewish Mason has stated. In fact, a cursory glance at Masonic literature shows that this is always stated as one of their basic beliefs. They also claim to believe in one God who created everyone. Thus we have the theory of "The Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of all Mankind," which is fundamentally against the teachings of the Bible.

John Q. Adams is the only Member to have been elected to the House of Representatives after having served as President of the United States. His father, John Adams, was the 2nd President of the United States. John Quincy Adams represented the citizens of Plymouth, Massachusetts from March 4, 1831 until his death, earning the nickname Old Man Eloquent for his great speaking ability. He worked to abolish slavery and opposed the House's "Gag Rule," which banned all debate on slavery from 1836 until 1844. On February 21, 1848, Adams suffered a stroke while sitting at his desk in the Old House Chamber. He was taken to the Speaker's office to recover but died there 2 days later.

President James Buchanan;
15th President and Anderson Cottage Inhabitant

by Nick Minecci Anderson Cottage is noted for being the summer White House for Abraham Lincoln and site where he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, but it was also a getaway for several other presidents, including Lincoln's predecessor, James Buchanan.
The fifteenth president, Buchanan occupied the White House from 1857 to 1861 and had the unpleasant distinction of presiding over the country during the slide into civil war. His failure to find a workable middle ground that kept the United States from going to war with itself was a sad end to what was a brilliant and distinguished political career that began in 1815.
Born the second of 11 children to James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan on April 23, 1791 in Cove Gap, Pa., Buchanan on what many thought was the edge of western civilization in the Allegheny Mountains. When writing about his birthplace in 1865 the former president stated "It is a rugged but romantic spot, and the mountain and mountain stream under the scenery cape captivating. I have warm attachments for it..."
In 1809 he graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and at the age of 21 became a lawyer in the city of Lancaster. While there he became active in Federalist Party politics (the Federalist Party is the forerunner to the Democratic Party), and after serving in the War of 1812, was elected to two terms as a Pennsylvania Assemblyman from 1814 to 1816, maintaining his legal practice.

James A. Buchanan IV
Ensign, United States Navy From a contemporary press report: A major benefactor of Rotary International and a retired contractor, he died Sunday, October 10, 1993 of an aortic aneurysm at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. The 74-year-old Washington-area contractor had been a member of Rotary International since 1952 and served as president of the Rockville chapter in 1969. In 1974 he served as Washington district governor. In 1990 he became the largest contributor ever, making several multimillion-dollar contributions to the Rotary Foundation. A gift by Mr. Buchanan in 1985 allowed the World Health Organization to immunize millions of children throughout the world against polio. A Washington, D.C. native, he was a graduate of the Hill School in 1938 and studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Miami and Tri-State College in Angola, Ind. While he was a student, he wrote a paper on wing icing, gaining him entry into the Royal Air Force at the start of World War II. After a serious flying accident he left the RAF and became a flight instructor for the Royal Canadian Air Force in Ontario. When the U.S. declared war, he returned and joined the Navy. After World War II he settled in the Rockville area, where he operated the Buchanan Construction Co. "The most unique factor in his life was that he was forward-looking," said Robert G. Ketron, Rotary International president. "He never looked backward. He was devoted to developing leadership in people. It gave him great pleasure to help people."

First Encounters with James Buchanan’s Scholarship: A Personal Reminiscence by Edwin G. West, Carleton University As an economics teacher in England, the late 1950s and early 1960s was a relatively uninspiring intellectual period for me. While the discipline of economics was still absorbed with Keynes, microeconomics was usually engrossed in static neoclassical models of efficient allocation in contrast with market failure. Theories of government failure had not yet appeared, and when they did they came from the U.S. Prospects for me changed round about 1961 after I are received messages (directly or indirectly) from Harry Johnson to the effect that the real excitement and action was to be found, not in Europe, but in the U.S. And the subjects to look out for were: industrial organization, international trade, and public economics. Echoing these same sentiments, with respect to public economics, my Ph.D. supervisor, Jack Wiseman urged me to focus especially on what an economist by the name of James Buchanan was doing. My first acquaintance with Buchanan in print was his Public Principles of Public Debt , published in 1958. His discussion of the problem of the burden on future generations was remarkably penetrating, as was his attack on the notion that "we owe it to ourselves". His use of subjective cost concepts was important here in demonstrating that we do not owe the debt to ourselves, but that the burden is shifted to future generations. But what Buchanan was most critical of was the contemporary assumption of Keynesian economists such as Lerner and Tobin that deficits were not the cause of high interest rates, high taxation, and low growth. Reviving the classical position, Buchanan responded by focusing on the erosion of inherited traditions of discipline that held deficits in check. We have to recognize, he has since maintained, that the natural proclivities of citizens favor deficit financing because: "Constituents enjoy receiving the benefits of public outlays, and they deplore paying taxes. Elected politicians attempt to satisfy constituents."
