Diplomatic Representative to Britain
When Polk's administration ended, Buchanan retired to his home at Wheatland, a country mansion outside Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He worked unsparingly to win the presidential nomination in 1852 and was the leading contender at the Democratic national convention that year. But the weary, deadlocked delegates nominated Franklin Pierce for president on the 49th ballot. In 1853 President Pierce appointed Buchanan as U.S. envoy to Britain.

About the fifteenth President of the United States James Buchanan, his birth, death, biography, description, facts and quotes.
15th President JAMES BUCHANAN Born: April 23, 1791, Cove Gap, Pa. Died: June 1, 1868, at his mansion "Wheatland" near Lancaster, Pa. Career: Graduate of Dickinson College, prosperous lawyer, member of the Pennsylvania State legislature, congressman, Ambassador to Russia, senator, Secretary of State, Ambassador to Britain. Three times (1844, 1848, and 1852) Buchanan tried unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination. Personal Life: When Buchanan was 28, his fiancee committed suicide following a lover's quarrel. This experience scarred him permanently, and though he enjoyed the company of beautiful women, he never married. For many years his niece, Miss Harriet Lanea statuesque blonde with violet eyeslived with him and acted as his official hostess. His Person: Heavyset, nearly 6' tall. His sight was uneven (one eye nearsighted and the other farsighted) so he always held his head at a tilt, cocked down and to one side. Election: On his 4th try, at age 65, Buchanan finally won the Democratic presidential nomination. His chief opponent in the general election of 1856 was the candidate of the newly organized Republican party, John C. Fremont. Former President Millard Fillmore was the candidate of the anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant "Know Nothing" party. Buchanan won only a minority of the popular vote (45%to 33% for Fremont and 22% for Fillmore), but in the Electoral College he triumphed over his 2 opponents174 to their 114 and 8 respectively.

JAMES BUCHANAN U.S. President Buchanan was the last American president born in the 18th century, and his term (1857-61) was the last before the Civil War. Buchanan came to the presidency after a distinguished public career: 10 years as a U.S. representative and another 10 as a senator, ambassadorships to both Russia and Great Britain, and service as James K. Polk 's secretary of state. In the 1856 elections he whipped both former president Millard Fillmore and frontier hero John C. Fremont , no small feat. But as president Buchanan couldn't handle the bad blood between North and South; his attempts to find a legalistic solution were never effective. By the election of 1860 Buchanan was tired of the presidency and did not seek re-election. Rightly or wrongly, "Old Buck" has been tagged as one of history's least effective presidents. He was succeeded by Republican Abraham Lincoln
Extra credit : Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor and the only president never to marry... His vice-president, John Cabell Breckinridge of Kentucky, was the youngest ever: just over 36 years old when he was inaugurated.

James Buchanan, the only bachelor to be President, spent his entire term of office in an unusual attempt to maintain the integrity of the Union. By the time he left office, the secession of the Southern States was already in progress. Elected:
    The Early Years
James Buchanan was born in a log Cabin at Cove Gap, a few miles outside of Mercerberg, Pennsylvania. At the age of five he and his family moved from the log cabin to Mercerberg. Buchanan received his initial education at the Old Stone Academy in Mercerberg. He went on to attend Dickinson College in Carlisle. He graduated in 1809 and moved to Lancaster to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1812. In October 1814, Buchanan was admitted to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. Buchanan emerged as a leading opponent of the policies of John Quincy Adams. He was an active supporter of Jackson's presidential campaign. From 1829-31, Buchanan was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. In 1830, Buchanan declined to run for re-election, preferring to return to his law practice. From 1832-33, he served as the US Ambassador to Russia, where he successfully concluded a commercial treaty. From 1834-1845, Buchanan served in the US Senate. From 1837, he served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and from 1945, for four years, he was US Secretary of State. In 1848, Buchanan was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. When he was not selected, he supported his opponent, Lewis Cass, who lost the election. In 1852, he was once again a contender for the nomination, lost again, and this time the winner he supported - Franklin Pierce - was elected. Pierce appointed Buchanan Ambassador to Great Britain.

    James Buchanan
US President - 1857-61 Courtesy of the National Guard Tall, stately, stiffly formal in the high stock he wore around his jowls, James Buchanan was the only President who never married. Presiding over a rapidly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time. Relying on constitutional doctrines to close the widening rift over slavery, he failed to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments which favored the South. Nor could he realize how sectionalism had realigned political parties: the Democrats split; the Whigs were destroyed, giving rise to the Republicans. Born into a well-to-do Pennsylvania family in 1791, Buchanan, a graduate of Dickinson College, was gifted as a debater and learned in the law.

    Buchanan, James
, fifteenth president of the United States . Born near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, Buchanan graduated from Dickinson College. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives , as U.S. minister to Russia and England, in the U.S. Senate , and as secretary of state for James K. Polk . In 1854 he joined in writing the Ostend Manifesto . In 1856 he received the Democratic presidential nomination, defeating Republican John C. Frémont and the candidate of the American party, former president Millar Fillmore. As sectional tensions over slavery increased, he tried unsuccessfully to keep peace between the North and South. During Buchanan's term the Supreme Court handed down the Dred Scott decision , John Brown's raid occurred, and South Carolina seceded. He took no action (for which he was reviled at the time and afterward), only forestalling hostilities until Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated. Buchanan was the only bachelor to hold the office of president.
