History and Government
History: In ancient times, Brunei was a powerful trading nation controlling most of Borneo and part of the Philippines archipelago, with extensive connections throughout South-East Asia. The country was occupied briefly by the Spanish during the late-16th century. Part of the Spanish colonial mission was always the vigorous dissemination of Catholicism – in the previous century, Islam had been adopted in Brunei as the principal religion. In the mid-19th century, Brunei came under British influence when the seafarer, James Brooke, was granted control of the Sarawak region (now part of Malaysia) in return for protection against pirates. The island of Labuan was also ceded to Britain, thereby reducing Brunei to its current borders. In 1888, Britain declared ‘North Borneo’ to be a British Protectorate, under which the territory was governed by a British resident, with purely nominal powers available to the Sultan. This arrangement continued – apart from a period of Japanese occupation between 1941–1945 – until Brunei’s transition to independence began in 1959. That year, a new Anglo-Brunei agreement was signed, under which the UK assumed responsibility for defence and foreign affairs but passed control of all other matters to the Sultan. Three years later, the North Borneo Liberation Army instigated rebellions, during which a state of emergency was declared. As a result, the Sultan assumed the power to rule by decree. Since then, with the benefit of its vast oil wealth, Brunei has undergone steady, if somewhat unequal, development. The country is in many respects comparable to the Gulf sheikhdoms – small, exceedingly wealthy and more or less surrounded by larger, poorer nations.

Sexual relationships

If you are traveling to this country, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet citizen interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time (as I said: no prostitutes). On the other hand, they often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young women, especially in the big cities, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com . The service lists a good number of residents explicitly interested in non-commercial sexual relationships. While there are more males on the search than females, there are indeed an amazing number of women using the service. It is truly amazing how popular www.AdultfriendsFinder.com

ROYAL PERSIAN PAINTINGS
A Short History of Qajar Iran
Between 1785 and 1925, Iran was unified under the Qajar dynasty. In these 140 years Iran made the transition from feuding tribal confederations to centralised monarchy and, finally, to constitutional parliament. The Qajars, originally a Turkic tribe, imposed unity on a country that had been in turmoil for much of the sixth century, rekindling an image of imperial splendour last seen under the Safavids in the 17th century. In a Muslim society where there was a tension between the licence of painting and the strictures of Islam, the Qajars are noted for their vigorous, often resplendent tradition of figurative painting. The works of art in this exhibition convey the range of this tradition and illustrate four principal themes:
  • the use of imperial portraits for political ends
  • the changing personality and pretensions of successive Shahs
  • a widening interest in portraiture and the figural arts
  • and the broader changes among the Qajar elite society as it adapted to European innovations.
The Inheritance: Safavid and Zand influences In 1722 the Safavids were overthrown by Afghan invaders, who were in turn expelled by Nadir Shah Afshar (r.1736-47). Despite these upheavals, and severe economic decline, the traditions of late Safavid art survived under Nadir Shah, whose conquest of Delhi also opened the way to influences from India.

History
Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century and later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence. The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan Bolkiah (1473-1521) who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan Hassan (1605-19) who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure elements of which remain. After Sultan Hassan Brunei entered a period of decline due to internal battles over royal succession as well as the rising influences of European colonial powers in the region that among other things disrupted traditional trading patterns destroying the economic base of Brunei and many other Southeast Asia sultanates. In 1839 the English adventurer James Brooke arrived in Borneo and helped the Sultan put down a rebellion. As a reward he became governor and later "Rajah" of Sarawak in northwest Borneo and gradually expanded the territory under his control.

    Brunei Coronation History Sultan
US Department Of State Post Report Negara Brunei Darussalam (the country’s official name, meaning “Abode of Peace”) is one of the most ancient kingdoms in Asia. Early Chinese records mention a certain kingdom referred to as “Po-lo,” “Po-ni,” and “Puni.” The present Sultan is the 29th in a line dating from Sultan Muhammad, who converted to Islam in 1514. From 1888 to 1983, Brunei was a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1959, Brunei became a self-governing constitutional monarchy, with the British retaining responsibility for the country’s foreign affairs and defense. Brunei became fully independent on January 1, 1984 at which time, the American Consulate General (established only 12 days earlier) was elevated to Embassy status. Brunei’s capital and largest city is Bandar Seri Begawan. Formerly known as Brunei Town, the capital was renamed to honor the present Sultan's father in 1970. ... (Public Record Office files from the Foreign Office, Colonial Office,Treasury, Dominions Office, Board of Trade and Cabinet Committees)
Part 1: Files for 1950-1954 This microfilm project focuses on the dramatic growth achieved in Brunei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan between the years 1950-1980. This collection of Public Record Office material includes Cabinet papers, Colonial, Dominions and Foreign Office files as well as Treasury documents. This series will form a prime source for social, political and economic historians studying economic development in South and South East Asia. Part 1 covers 1950-1954, a period that witnessed the onset of the Cold War and conflict in Korea. Many Asian countries concerned were either recovering from Japanese occupation or trying to shake off their colonial past. The new communist regime in mainland China also put immense pressure on the whole area. There is much on the Colombo Plan and on conferences in 'Mallaig', Singapore and Bukit Serene in Malaya. Topics covered include rice growing across the region, rubber production in Malaya, oil drilling off Brunei, and relations between Hong Kong and mainland China. There is also material on American aid and the implications of their policy towards Taiwan and Korea.
