Barunah!' exclaimed early settlers who reached the Brunei River. The classical Malay expression meant excellence of the site for settlement, security, access and richness of the surrounding. In short, "Oh, Yeah!". It is said the exclamation became the name of the new city-state. Barunah later changed to Barunai. Barunai, of Sanskrit origin, comes from the word Varuna. In its Malay context, it referred to a nation of seafarers and traders. Brunei and Borneo were among early European references to the state and the island. The second sultan, Sultan Ahmad, was the first to name 'Brunei' from the word 'Barunah'. Darussalam, Arabic terms for Abode of Peace, was added in the 15 th century by the third sultan, Sharif Ali, to emphasise Islam as state religion, and to enhance its spread. Old Brunei was a nation of Malay Hindu-Buddhists, according to a Chinese account of Puli, believed to be an early Chinese reference to Brute Old Brunei was said to have Similar Malay-Hindu Buddhist traditions and customs as Funan or Kumlun, Chinese names for the first Malay state in Indochina during the early Christian era. Indians knew it as Sailendra, and Arab traders called it Kamrun.

BruneiDirect.Com Legislative Council Opens New Page In Brunei History Bandar Seri Begawan – September 25, 2004 will mark another momentous day for the country with the convening of the Legislative Council Brunei, after being in hiatus for 21 years ago. The Legislative Council Brunei that will reconvene tomorrow, Saturday, can trace its history back nearly five decades ago. At the helm of its creation was Almarhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, who ascended the throne as Brunei's 28th ruler at the mature age of 35 and was also Brunei's first foreign-educated Sultan. In June of 1950, Brunei was already fast becoming known as a major oil producing country and well on its way to being a super rich state, and he was determined to use these revenues to advance his country socially, politically and economically and by the same measure pursue steps to achieve self-government, to which he would later be rightfully dubbed as the architect of modern Brunei. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, remarked in a titah in 1996, that Brunei is a new nation but an ancient country.

Brunei Time and Date Brunei History Back to Top Historians believe there was a antecedent to the present Brunei Sultanate. Chinese records suggest that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the 7th century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently defeated by the Sumatran Hindu empire of Srivijaya in the early 9th century, which later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was defeated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its freedom and once again rose to prominence. In 1967, Sultan Omar renounced in favor of his eldest son, Hassanal Bolkiah, who became the 29th ruler. The former Sultan remained as Defense Minister and assumed the royal title Seri Begawan. In 1970, the national capital, Brunei Town, was renamed Bandar Seri Begawan in his honor. The Seri Begawan died in 1986. On January 4, 1979, Brunei and the United Kingdom signed a new treaty of friendship and cooperation. On January 1, 1984, Brunei Darussalam became a fully independent state.

Abroad, Brunei pursued a more active foreign policy during the last decade, joining the Non-Aligned Movement and establishing diplomatic relations with China, Vietnam, Iran and Myanmar. A military cooperation agreement was signed with the USA, supplementing that with the UK. Brunei hosted an ASEAN summit in July 2002, which agreed co-operative measures in the field of counter-terrorism among member states. Brunei is also involved in the search for a settlement of the awkward and potentially dangerous dispute over the Spratly Islands, the South China Sea archipelago claimed by six countries, including Brunei itself and China. Relations with Malaysia have improved since the resolution of various long-running border disputes.
Government
Brunei is a traditional Islamic monarchy, with supreme political power vested in the Sultan. He is advised by the Privy Council, the Religious Council, the Council of Cabinet Ministers and the Council of Succession.

ABOUT BRUNEI Brunei History Brunei Darussalam the Abode of Peace is an apt translation of Brunei Darussalam, which lies on the northwest coast of exotic Borneo. Bounded by the Malaysian states of Sarawak and on the west, by the South China Sea. Brunei is divided into four districts, Brunei-Muara, Temburong, Tutong and Belait.
The country consists of 5,765 sq km of land, most of which is still covered by rich tropical rainforest. Of this the majority is still primary virgin rainforest which plays host to a large variety of flora and fauna including eagles, hornbills, bears, civets, snakes, crocodiles, butterflies, spiders, pitcher plants and the giant Rafflesia.
The population of Brunei Darussalam stands 300,000. The Malays are the majority of the population, while the Chinese, Indians, and other indigenous groups make up the rest. Brunei's population is a youthful one; half its people are under the age of 20 and males outnumber the females by a slight margin.
Malay is the official language but English is widely spoken, especially in business and tourism circles.
