It has a coastline of about 100 miles along the South China Sea in the north. Flat coastal plains rise to mountains in the east while the west is hilly lowland. The country has an equatorial climate with high temperatures, humidity and heavy rainfall. One environmental issue is that of smoke and haze that frequently envelop the region because of forest fires in nearby Indonesia. Brunei is a party to international agreements protecting the ozone layer and the sea from pollution. Petroleum and natural gas reserves contribute significantly to the nation's wealth. It is Southeast Asia's third largest producer of oil and has one of the highest average incomes in Asia. The country's main exports consist of crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied natural gas. These are exported mainly to Japan, Korea, the United States and countries in the Association of South East Nations (ASEAN). However, having recognized the limited nature of its oil reserves, the government has been working toward diversifying its production in other areas.
