    General Information
    Geography
Brunei Darussalam (Brunei, Abode of Peace) is a Sultanate, which occupies 5 765 square kilometres on the north-west corner of the island of Borneo. Its capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is situated on the Brunei River. Primary and secondary rainforest covers approximately 80 per cent of Brunei's landmass. Brunei claims a 200 kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which overlaps other claims in the South China Sea.
    Population
It is estimated that approximately 67 per cent of Brunei's population (estimated in 2004 at 365,251) are Malay, with Chinese and indigenous peoples representing fifteen per cent and six per cent respectively. Malay is the national and official language, although English is widely used in commerce, government and education. Under Brunei's education system, students begin bilingual English and Malay (or Chinese, depending on their ethnic background) language instruction from age 9. The official national religion of Islam permeates the social and cultural fabric of the country, with the Sultan playing an active part in many annual religious events.

The Sultanate of Brunei's heyday occurred between the 15th and 17th centuries, when its control extended over coastal areas of northwest Borneo and the southern Philippines
Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers, and piracy.
In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was achieved in 1984. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs in the less developed countries. The same family has now ruled in Brunei for over six centuries.

Brunei (03/05) In the 1970s, Brunei invested sharply increasing revenues from petroleum exports and maintained government spending at a low and constant rate. Consequently, the government was able to build its foreign reserves and invest them around the world to help provide for future generations. Part of the reserve earnings was reportedly also used to help finance the government's annual budget deficit. Since 1986, however, petroleum revenues have decreased, and government spending has increased. Until 2000, the government ran a budget deficit since 1988. ... All schools, including eight non-government Chinese schools and four Christian-based schools, must give instruction in the Islamic faith to all students. The Government uses a range of municipal and planning legislation to restrict the expansion of all religions other than official Islam. The Government detained several Christians in late 2000 and 2001 for alleged subversive activities. Brunei to increase bilateral trade: Aziz holds talks with Bolkiah
    By Qudssia Akhlaque

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 7: Pakistan and Brunei on Saturday resolved to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation and to start flights between the two countries. During their 45-minute meeting, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Sultan of Brunei Hasannal Bolkiah reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations and discussed cooperation in various multilateral forums, including Asean, OIC and the UN.
The sultan assured the prime minister of Brunei’s support for Pakistan’s bid for a full dialogue partnership status with the Asean. Mr Aziz later described his meeting as ‘very productive’ and said they had agreed to opening up of flights between Brunei and Pakistan.
The two leaders advocated greater people-to-people interaction. Sultan Bolkiah appreciated the role Pakistan was playing to promote peace and stability in the region. He underlined the need for projecting Islam as a religion of peace and tolerance. The revitalization of the Organization of Islamic Conference also came under discussion.
The prime minister also shared with the sultan Pakistan’s perspective on the United Nations reforms and its stand on the proposed expansion of the Security Council.

    Brunei History and Culture
History During the 15th and 16th centuries, Brunei was considered as one of the regional great powers, controlling Borneo and substantial parts of the Philippines as well. The Spanish and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive, but it was the British, who arrived in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, who began to erode Brunei's influence. Sarawak was ceded to the British in the 19th century and a series of 'treaties' were forced on the Sultan as James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, consolidated his power base. In 1888, the sultanate became a British protectorate.
