The ecology and ethnobiology of human-rainforest interaction
in Brunei (a Dusun case study): ESRC Grant No.R000 23 3088
Background
Ellen visited Brunei in September 1991 to make preliminary arrangements for the project. By this time, however, it had become clear that the Brunei authorities would not permit research in the Batu Apoi area. As a wildlife reserve, the government did not officially allow human settlement and subsistence extraction, although it was known to occur. As a result, the project moved to Sukang in the Belait district, and our official sponsor and institutional collaborator became the Brunei Museum rather than UBD. Bernstein arrived in the field in April 1992 and made three short preliminary trips to Sukang, where he encountered delays and logistical problems, and for which he was eventually unable to obtain official residence permission. The field site, therefore, moved yet again, this time to Tasek Merimbun (Rambai Sub-district) in the Tutong district, a location which Ellen had visited in 1991 and ear-marked as a possibility. Moving the field site twice led to inevitable delays, a missed optimal season for collecting ethnobotanical specimens, and to the effective detachment of the ESRC project from the biological work being done in Temburong. However, Tasek Merimbun has otherwise proved to be a most satisfactory field site, with excellent access. The award of a three month extension by the ESRC has compensated for most of the lost time.

    General Information
    Geography
Brunei Darussalam (Brunei, Abode of Peace) is a Sultanate, which occupies 5 765 square kilometres on the north-west corner of the island of Borneo. Its capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is situated on the Brunei River. Primary and secondary rainforest covers approximately 80 per cent of Brunei's landmass. Brunei claims a 200 kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which overlaps other claims in the South China Sea.
    Population
It is estimated that approximately 67 per cent of Brunei's population (estimated in 2004 at 365,251) are Malay, with Chinese and indigenous peoples representing fifteen per cent and six per cent respectively. Malay is the national and official language, although English is widely used in commerce, government and education. Under Brunei's education system, students begin bilingual English and Malay (or Chinese, depending on their ethnic background) language instruction from age 9. The official national religion of Islam permeates the social and cultural fabric of the country, with the Sultan playing an active part in many annual religious events.

Abroad, Brunei pursued a more active foreign policy during the last decade, joining the Non-Aligned Movement and establishing diplomatic relations with China, Vietnam, Iran and Myanmar. A military cooperation agreement was signed with the USA, supplementing that with the UK. Brunei hosted an ASEAN summit in July 2002, which agreed co-operative measures in the field of counter-terrorism among member states. Brunei is also involved in the search for a settlement of the awkward and potentially dangerous dispute over the Spratly Islands, the South China Sea archipelago claimed by six countries, including Brunei itself and China. Relations with Malaysia have improved since the resolution of various long-running border disputes.

Brunei is a traditional Islamic monarchy, with supreme political power vested in the Sultan. He is advised by the Privy Council, the Religious Council, the Council of Cabinet Ministers and the Council of Succession.

    And Now.... BRUNEI
    Teacher Page
    WHY BRUNEI?
"Brunei is one of the oldest existing polities in Southeast Asia," observe D. Ranjit Singh and Jatswan S. Sidhu in their excellent Historical Dictionary of Brunei Darussalam (1997). It has a "rich historical heritage," they continue, "and is the longest surviving sultanate in the region." If that's not incentive enough to introduce your students to this unit on Brunei, compare the third curriculum standard listed below with this further assessment by Singh and Sidhu: "Through the ages … Brunei acquired an astute sense in the use of international diplomacy. The monarchy especially made effective use of this tool to steer the kingdom out of very tight situations and, in the process, has managed to save and preserve the identity of the state … to bring it to the status of a full sovereign nation." Clearly, Brunei is an excellent topic for teachers working on any standard of learning (SOL) that deals with the impact of globalization on traditional societies.
