Brunei Culture Back to Top Bruneians are preponderantly Malay, and customs, beliefs and pastimes are very similar to those of Peninsular Malaysia. Adat, or customary law, governs many of the country's ceremonies; there is even a government department responsible for preserving ceremony and advising on protocol, dress and heraldry.Brunei is a fairly strict Muslim country and a Ministry of Religious Affairs fosters and encourage Islam. The constitution does, however, allow for other religions to be practised. The official language is Malay, but English is widely spoken. Jawi, Malay written in Arabic script, is taught in schools, and most signs in the country are written both in Jawi and Roman script. The Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) is clearly the most famous, distinctive and best classical Malay prose to be ever produced, sharing in the great literary tradition other Malay works such as the Hikayat Hang Tuah, Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai and the Hikayat Marong Mahawangsa (Kedah Annals). It chronicles the establishment of the Malaccan sultanate, charting a course of more than 600 years in a solid compact book filled with intricate details regarding royal protocol, royal lineages, weaving in various historical, mythical and legendary figures and episodes in a compendium that still captivates its audiences three centuries later.

The ecology and ethnobiology of human-rainforest interaction
in Brunei (a Dusun case study): ESRC Grant No.R000 23 3088
Background
Ellen visited Brunei in September 1991 to make preliminary arrangements for the project. By this time, however, it had become clear that the Brunei authorities would not permit research in the Batu Apoi area. As a wildlife reserve, the government did not officially allow human settlement and subsistence extraction, although it was known to occur. As a result, the project moved to Sukang in the Belait district, and our official sponsor and institutional collaborator became the Brunei Museum rather than UBD. Bernstein arrived in the field in April 1992 and made three short preliminary trips to Sukang, where he encountered delays and logistical problems, and for which he was eventually unable to obtain official residence permission. The field site, therefore, moved yet again, this time to Tasek Merimbun (Rambai Sub-district) in the Tutong district, a location which Ellen had visited in 1991 and ear-marked as a possibility. Moving the field site twice led to inevitable delays, a missed optimal season for collecting ethnobotanical specimens, and to the effective detachment of the ESRC project from the biological work being done in Temburong. However, Tasek Merimbun has otherwise proved to be a most satisfactory field site, with excellent access. The award of a three month extension by the ESRC has compensated for most of the lost time.

... Table of Contents An Invitation This first Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning will provide a unique opportunity for Commonwealth citizens to share a range of experiences and interests. Co-hosted by The Commonwealth of Learning, the Brunei Darussalam Ministry of Education and Universiti Brunei Darussalam , and with the theme of Empowerment through Knowledge and Technology , the Forum aptly commemorates ten years of The Commonwealth of Learning. The need for such a Forum was made evident last year at the 13 th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers, held in Botswana, which explored the potential for communication and information technologies to improve the quality and accessibility of education throughout life. While the advent of technologies holds much promise, we must ensure that the disparities between the technology rich and the technology poor are addressed, and that we are all well prepared to use appropriate technologies effectively and efficiently for human resource development.

Target species for sea ranching in mangrove areas include mudcrab and black porgy . The mangrove situation in Southeast Asia is different from Japan's. To help countries in the region, the Japanese government has implemented a 5-year project with SEAFDEC that will develop mangrove-friendly aquaculture techniques and protect the environment.

By Simeona Aypa , Department of Agriculture
Santiago Baconguis , Department of Environment and Natural Resources Mangrove areas before the 1980s were considered vast tracks of wastelands that had to be developed into other uses. In 1967, there were 418, 990 ha of mangroves; 15 years later, 239,387 remained; today, only about 100,000 ha are left. There are many causes of this destruction. On top of the list is charcoal and firewood utilization, followed by the expansion of agricultural areas, fishponds, urban and industrial development, harbor construction, mining and housing projects. With the rise in human population comes the demand for agriculture, aquaculture and industrial development.
