Building Web Pages with Composer
Composer helps you create and edit your own web pages and place (or "post") them on the web. Composer looks and acts like a word processing program, and is just as easy to use. Behind the scenes of each page on the web is code called HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This name means that HTML is is the computer language used for marking up documents with links in them. The code, called HTML source code, tells the web browser how a page should look and act. You don't need to know how to write HTML code to make a web page. Composer enables you to work in a WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) environment - just like a word processor - and it automatically generates the HTML code you need to make your page do what you want it to do. The basic elements of a web page are text, pictures, and links. You can put all of these and more on your own pages, and then publish those pages on the web.

[ NOTE: This tutorial is also taught in a classroom setting. Check the tutorial registration form to see when the classes are offered. ] On the Web, conveying content is the core purpose of a webpage , especially so for the pages of an educational institution like Denison: the single most important reason visitors will return to your page is for current and correct information . Certainly there are some applications in which visual information is critical to the information transfer, for instance in the representation of some arts and artifacts. For most webpages, the addition of graphics, colors and styles should be considered very carefully to enhance, and not distract from, information transfer. However, a visually-pleasing page done properly will make your visitor's research time more enjoyable and give you some personal and creative satisfaction! A Content Management and Web Publishing Systems Gazetteer
By Philip Hunter - October 2001 Philip Hunter follows on from a recent Ariadne article with a detailed list of the different Content Management Systems currently available. In the last edition of Ariadne ], I wrote about the importance of Content Management Systems for the future of Universities. As a follow-up, I've prepared a selective list covering many of the different systems available. The overwhelming majority of these systems have been developed commercially, and are aimed at corporate users. The list opens with some general and introductory resources, and concludes with a pointer to another list of systems and links prepared by Paul Browning and Mike Lowndes, which was drawn to my attention shortly after this gazetteer was put together. Some CMS related tools are also in the list. System capabilities are as reported in company publicity materials. Content management systems, as with any other significant software committment, should be evaluated carefully before acquisition.

    What's Next?

This chapter begins our look at specific Java and XML topics. So far, we have covered the basics of using XML from Java, looking at the SAX and DOM APIs to manipulate XML and the fundamentals of using and creating XML itself. We've also looked at how JDOM can provide a more Java-centric means of using our XML data and documents within Java programs. Now that you have a grasp on using XML from your code, we will spend time on specific applications. The next six chapters represent the most significant applications of XML, and, in particular, how those applications are implemented in the Java space. While there are literally hundreds and soon to be thousands of important applications of XML, the topics in these chapters are those that continually seem to be in the spotlight, and that have a significant potential to change the way traditional development processes occur. We begin our look at these hot topics with the one XML application that seems to have generated the largest amount of excitement in the XML and Java communities: the web publishing framework. Although we have continually emphasized that generating presentation from content is perhaps over-hyped when compared to the value of the portable data that XML provides, using XML for presentation styling is still very important. This importance increases when looking at web-based applications.

Web publishers at UWO are responsible for the content of the pages they publish and are expected to abide by the highest standards of quality and responsibility. Additionally, all publishers should comply with established web policies Concentrate on original work Readers are looking for information on your department, your unit or you. The most valuable contribution you can make to your readers is to publish original work. Collections of pointers to the work of others, while a service that can be valuable, is not a substitute for publishing your own documents and materials. Take advantage of the work of others Cooperation and coordination are two prevailing principles among Web publishers on this campus and throughout the world. Rather than duplicating the work of others, take advantage of it. Incorporate links to the work of others into your own pages, when appropriate. Reducing redundancy lets you concentrate on original offerings. Review your pages Publishing in the Web is just that - publishing. And just like paper publishing, your Web pages should follow the normal procedures of proper review and approval before you publish them.

    Creating a website
    • Go over the website checklist to determine what server best meets your publishing needs. Decide on the directory structure of the site before doing any publishing. If you plan on creating a large site, it may be helpful to break the pages up into different directories. Directories help you organize and maintain your site by grouping the pages into their appropriate folders. For example, if you had a website relating to a Pizza Company, it would be helpful to have seperate directories for information about the menu, employees, locations, and for website images. This avoids the clutter of having all the files and images in one root folder. Note: When using directories be sure to put the an index.html file in the root of each directory. This not prevents directory browsing, and also gives the pages a more professional look.

    Browsers on Campus
Any HTML written for campus use needs to take the variety of browsers into consideration. The  Browser Kit from webmonkey provides a chart listing various features of different browsers as well as the versions in which different features were added.
    Images
Images used on web pages must be accompanied by a meaningful ALT attribute within the IMG tag.  This will assist users with browsers set to "images off" and users with visual impairments.  For example, instead of a blank ALT tag, or "img001", use "Picture of Union Square".  This point is a vital component of addressing equity issues on the ANU Web. It is important to provide the ALT tags for all images, even if they are decorative, since the Screen Reader recognizes the image and will simply say "image" without any detail.  The person using the Screen Reader can be confused, not knowing if the image is significant and the ALT tag has been missed, or whether it is merely decorative.
    Plug-Ins
Many web pages now incorporate functionality that requires a minimum browser configuration or a particular plug-in on the user's machine. If a web page requires such support it must be clearly stated that the page requires the plug-in in order to be viewed properly, and a link must be included to the website where the plug-in can be obtained by the user.

        - to set DOS paths to link your documents. O n the Web, at Last! - Publishing Through FTP Y ou may be wondering by now how much longer it will be before you are actually on the net. Well, now is the time. We have learned to write HTML scripts for our documents. We have learned to insert images and colours. We have learned to establish a variety of links. We have learned how to plan and organise our site. We now have a finished document (or documents) that can be put on the net for all to see. The prerequisite is to have a server. You either have a contract with a commercial server or your company provides access to a server of their own as is the case with the Moreton Institute. When you register with a service provider, they give you details of the address of your site for uploading of your pages. This address will also have a password which you need to keep carefully hidden from priying eyes. The password is determined by you and there are a few rules that you must be aware of regarding the making up of your password.

Faculty may use this resource to create instructional web pages for their courses, and students may develop web-based personal resumes to use as job search tools, but in general personal web pages may be on any topic as long as they do not violate the published policies of Aurora University. This document provides a summary of the steps you need to follow in order to set up a personal web site. Consult the AU Web Publishing and Design Standards documents for details on AU's web publishing support. A copy is available on the AU web site at www.aurora.edu/is/webpolicy.htm
    Acquire a User Account
To run your own web pages, you must have a regular email account on mail.aurora.edu, AU's mail server that is also configured to run web server software. All AU students, faculty and staff by default have an account on this machine. If you're not sure if you have an account, contact Information Services for assistance. User accounts on the server must be properly configured to run web pages. This involves setting up a special directory in your account called public_html. For most users, this directory already exists, but if you're not sure IS staff in the Computer Center will check to make sure it's there or set it up for you. Note that the alias name web.aurora.edu can be used when referencing the web server hosted on this machine.

Steps to Publishing on the World Wide Web
In order to publish information on the WWW, you will need to:
  • Make a plan for organizing the information you wish to present on the World Wide Web.
  • Information on the World Wide Web is organized into documents, know as pages . Since it will frequently be the case that you have more information than will reasonably be presented as a single page, you need to decide how to divide information into logical pages and then link those pages together into a web site . You should have a better idea of how to do this at the end of this course.
  • Get permission to store your completed documents on a WWW server computer.
  • The files that contain your web site must be stored on a WWW server which is continuously available to receive requests from WWW browsers. The central University of Victoria computer (unix.uvic.ca) acts as a WWW server and can be used to store both personal and departmental web documents. Procedures and policies for setting up a web site on the central University server can be found at: http://www.uvic.ca/webpages/index.html

The World Wide Web Potential for Education
    Session presenters:
  • Abstract:
The World Wide Web is a relatively new Internet resource which can be used for world wide publication of many types of written and audiovisual materials. User interaction with the materials is also possible through the use of special forms in which Web publishers can gather information about Web users. This new resource can be used effectively for educational purposes and has a tremendous potential for distance learning applications. This presentation will introduce basic concepts about the Web through the use of specific examples including materials published on the Web at Interamerican University by the presenters. Also a list of Web servers of interest to educators will be made available to the audience.
    Rationnale:
Internet resources such as the WWW are being explored intensively by all sorts of individuals and public and private enterprises for various reasons. As a means of commercial communication, the WWW has already had a strong impact on the way businesses are carried out nowadays. Personal publication of original hypermediated materials of utilitary, scientific, literary or entertainment nature is also being produced and extensively used in an ever increasing manner. Strictly educational materials, although not as abundant as we may expect, is also available on the Web. As educators we should be aware of the educational uses we could have available on the Web and be prepared to help our students make appropriate use of this information tool.
