Abbr. V.I. ) A group of islands of the northeast West Indies east of Puerto Rico. They are divided politically into the British Virgin Islands to the northeast and the Virgin Islands of the United States to the southwest. The islands were first sighted and named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Encyclopedia Virgin Islands, group of about 100 small islands, West Indies, E of Puerto Rico. The islands are divided politically between the United States and Great Britain. Although constituting the westernmost part of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands form a geological unit with Puerto Rico and the Greater Antilles; they are of volcanic origin overlaid with limestone. The islands are subject to sometimes severe hurricanes between August and October and suffer from light earthquakes. The water supply is almost completely dependent on rainfall and is preserved in cisterns; some water also comes from desalinization plants. The tropical climate, with its cooling northeast trade winds, and the picturesque quality of the islands, enhanced by their Old World architecture, have encouraged a large tourist trade, but the population, predominantly of African descent, remains poor. The islands were first visited by Europeans when Columbus landed on St. Croix in 1493.

British Virgin Islands (BVI)
( 1998 Expedition )
Expedition Corner Eco-Photo Explorers has just completed a photographic expedition to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in the Caribbean. Above is the flag of the British Virgin Islands, the shield shows a young lady and twelve lit lamps, representing the twelve wise virgins of the biblical story. Our base of operations was on the island of Tortola. From here, dives were arranged for nearby coral reefs and shipwrecks. During our visit to the islands, we explored several colorful coral reefs. The underwater terrain of the BVI was found to be healthy and well cared for by the local diving industry. Healthy populations of reef fish were spotted, along with large stretches of undamaged coral. The islands of the BVI are rich in local culture and are picturesque in many ways. Many of the Islands are simply small pieces of rocks jutting out from the surrounding waters, and several are uninhabited. We explored the larger islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda, stopping by the famous Baths to photograph the large rock formations found in this magnificent location.

Pros
The LOCAL WEST INDIAN PEOPLE and the super intelligent tropical fish Cons Anti-tourism, language barriers, high-priced lodging, and the local Rasta Law (anti-Rastafarian Law this law sucks!) Full Review Nature's Little Secrets indeed! The BVI is an eclectic mix of 26 small islands that include everything from local fungi and scratch music and a variety of patois dialects, to an annual week-long Carnival/Festival and the rare crack addict wandering the streets asking for money. What's patois ("pah-twah") you ask? The local English dialect, of course. Just try and understand it, too. I lived there a year and I still didn't understand most of the patois I heard even the watered down versions customized for my ears. The only atoll in the BVI is Anegada, which has about 400 residents on 13 square miles. Anegada's highest point is 14 feet above sea level avoid the hurricane season. The remaining islands are steep and volcanic, and are rather intimidating to negotiate by vehicle if you're not used to driving on the left side of the road. Remember, this is a British Territory. The total population in the BVI is about 18,000 or so. When you're on some of the smaller islands, like Jost Van Dyke, or Peter Island, you'll think you might be the only person around for miles, and you'll probably be right.

About British Virgin Islands
General
The British Virgin Islands is a British Dependant Territory consisting of numerous small islands approximately 50 miles east of Puerto Rico and adjacent to the United States Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. The Principal islands of the British Virgin Islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Josh Van Dyke. The capital of British Virgin Islands is Road Town, situated in Tortola. The population of the islands is about 19,000 with an ethnic diversity of Afro-Caribbean, European, American and Asian.
Government
The Queen of England is the Head-Of-State of the British Virgin Islands. She is represented by an appointed Governor. Britain is responsible for the islands defense, internal security and external affairs. There is a bi-cameral Westminster modeled Parliamentary Democracy with locally elected members. Parliament is made up with two bodies, the Executive Council, presided over by the appointed Governor and includes the Attorney General (ex-officio) the Chief Minister (appointed by the Governor from those elected to the legislative council) and three other ministers on the advice of the Chief Minister. The legislative council consists of the four ministers and the nine other elected representatives. The legislative council is presided over by a speaker elected from outside the council.
Judicial
The Judicial System is under the direction of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, which includes the High Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal. The Final Court of Appeal resides with the Privy Council in England. The legal system is based on British Common Law and statute enacted by the locally elected legislative council when signed and approved by the Governor.

The Caribbean is made up of some 35 different countries and thousands of islands; e ach has its own special character, history, culture, people and style. Island-hopping is a great way to experience two or more different holidays in one, whether you choose two contrasting experiences (such as a laid-back first week with little more than a book and rum punch followed by an active second week with plenty to see and do) or two similar islands or hotels but in two different settings. Some couples like to visit two or more different islands as a compromise to ensure each person gets exactly what they want – the same principle will ring a bell with many families too! What are the most popular two-centre choices? With the total flexibility that we can offer to tailor-make virtually any request – anything goes. We will help you plan the right itinerary to make best use of your precious holiday time. Most two-centre holidays start on an island with direct air access such as Barbados, Antigua or St Lucia and then move on to a different destination or resort after a few days, a week or more. This makes for the smoothest itinerary. What choices are there for inter-island flights?
