OVERALL STRATEGY
The purpose of the National Integrated Development Strategy (NIDS) is to improve the standards of living and the living conditions of British Virgin Islanders by building an economy for the 21st century (I), ensuring an ecologically sustainable environment (II), ensuring strong social integration and supportive social services (III), maintaining a good government for the people (IV) and building communities around people’s needs (V). These are our 5 major development themes which will guide our strategic objectives and major strategy measures.
To build an economy for the 21st century, we must reduce overall vulnerability (goal A) by building a strong and diversified economy (strategy 1). The public sector must provide leadership in the economy (strategy 4), policies must encourage BVIslanders to adapt to new opportunities (strategy 5), our energies must also focus on helping BVIslanders to deal with disasters and emergencies (strategy 14). A huge effort must be placed into improving the appearance of the British Virgin Islands (strategy 20) and we work tirelessly to build consumer and investors confidence and encourage them to buy locally (strategy 30).
A 21st century economy must be supported by an information age infrastructure in addition to the traditional physical infrastructure. To survive in the 21st century, the British Virgin Islands must continue to improve the physical infrastructure (goal E) through strategies designed to build an appropriate infrastructure (strategy 2) and link housing and shelter with the economy (strategy 19).

Government of the British Virgin Islands PLANS NIDS BACKGROUND PAPERS RECREATION AND SPORTS
Recreation is any activity which affords opportunity for renewal of mind, body and spirit through pursuits which bring personal enjoyment – including participation in some forms of sport. Games and sport have been viewed as popular forms of recreation, but recreation need not imply sport – or any physical activity for that matter. However, sport is a universally accepted recreational opportunity for spectators (tourists and residents alike). This distinction is necessary as it helps to determine the future focus and mechanisms necessary for the development sport in the Territory.

The BVI has competed in such games as: the Central American and Caribbean Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, Leeward Islands Cricket Matches, CARIFTA Games, Regional Volleyball and Basketball tournaments, and the Olympic Games, in Spain and Atlanta. We are reputed to have several athletes who rank in the top (20) twenty in the world as juniors. The BVI Amateur Athletic Committee and the Olympic Committee have both done well to promote track and field events in particular; the sport associations such as the Amateur Softball Association, the Bike Federation and Cricket Association are well established.

Although there are over 50 islands, rocks and cays dotting the sparkling blue water, many of them are uninhabited. facts

The British Virgin Islands, located in the northeast Caribbean, are a collection of gorgeous islands that used to be inhabited by pirates and sailors. Lying 60 miles east of Puerto Rico, they are exquisite tropical destinations, visited by tourists from all over the world. These islands are comprised of hidden caves and fascinating inlets, and for the most part they are incredibly small in size. Only Tortola and Virgin Gorda are of reasonable stature in geographic terms. The colony of Tortola itself is only 24 square miles, and its capital, Road Town, has emerged as a haven for yacht chartering. This came about after the development of Wickhams Cay, a 70-acre marina and landfill. The southern coast of Tortola mainly consists of great mountains, and the northern coast a fabulous white-sand beach with beautiful bays and banana trees. Virgin Gorda, only a 12-mile ferry ride away, is equally glorious, with just as rich a history. Both Tortola and Virgin Gorda are controlled by the British , but are controlled loosely, and they are basically free to do as they please. They are governed well, and you will find yourself safe and comfortable in both of these destinations. The locals are friendly and eager to assist you, and for being such tiny locations, there are a wonderful amount of activities to choose from, and plenty of tremendous sightseeing locations and fun to be had.

The Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee announced plans for the

Education and Culture and the BVI Tourist Board last Friday.
Those in attendance observed a moment of silence for the late Ishma Frett,

whom the village was named in 2000. The activities for the 2002 BVI festival are set to begin July 14th with

Carrot Bay fiesta. The calendar of events will include the usual calypso
and reggae shows, tramps, panorama, costume and culture night, food fair, Sunday morning well ceremony, Ms. BVI Queen show, parade, aquatic sports and horse race. Hon. Fahie launches bid for re-election
With the launching of the bid for the re-election of Representative for District 1, Minister of Education and Culture, Honourable Andrew Fahie, the ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has now presented its full slate of candidates to contest the 2003 general elections.
Hon. Fahie, “A Man on a Mission”, held his declaration ceremony this past Saturday night on the Capoon’s Bay field. “You sent me to the Legislative Council as a 28-year old four years ago with a resounding victory…And tonight, I feel comfortable asking for four more years, because I have delivered.”
A year and a half after being elected, he was appointed as Minister of Education and Culture. “In that time, your man took on several missions,” he declared. He lists these to include fencing schools and changing the environment around the BVI High School/Afro Tree.
The Education Minister said the Ministry is following a 10-year education plan to improve and modernize the education system. “Your man on a mission will ensure that this territory has the best education system in the Caribbean.”
Taking a look at his accomplishments throughout his District, the D-1 Rep. spoke of smoothly resurfaced roads and other infrastructural projects, the educational programmes and opportunities he has provided for his young people, the remodelling and upgrading of schools. He said the BVI has already started to implement a new system of wireless computer labs throughout the territory, becoming the first in Caribbean to blaze the trail in this technology. “Another mission engaged and soon to be another mission accomplished.”

The BVIs culture emerges from its heritage, its setting, and its peoples' blessed combination of practicality and inner harmony. Its essence is in its community and sense of tradition. Beliefs have been handed down from generation to generation, and if it were not for the occasional souvenir shop or modern yacht sailing by, one would certainly be able to picture the islands as they were a century ago. BVI culture has flourished in its food, music, crafts and more. Much of the islands' enchantment and imagination is evident in its folklore. Both written and oral stories stem from folk beliefs, with a strong presence of the spirit world. Jumbies - awesome spirits who are generally more wicked than good but are nonetheless celebrated - are main characters in stories, festivals and other art forms. Singing is also a force to be reckoned with in the BVI, and rhythm is a part of life. Indigenous music comes in the form of
