Search The British Virgin Islands Nature's Little Secrets - Over 60 Caribbean Islands to Explore When you think of The British Virgin Islands (BVI), don't think big, think numerous. There is more of everything in The British Virgin Islands, but only in the ways that count. With more beauty, more isolated beaches and more unsurpassed sailing. These islands are truly one of nature's little secrets. The BVI's main islands include:
  • Tortola, the largest island and the primary center of Caribbean yachting... Virgin Gorda, an isle of natural wonders and home to The Baths... Picturesque Jost Van Dyke - The Caribbean as it used to be... Isolated Anegada, a coral atoll with miles of deserted Caribbean beaches.
Each island has its own special character and charm. But these are only the major islands of the BVI. There are also dozens of secluded islands, islets and cays, all unique and beautiful in their own right. Yes, there are a lot of hotels, small resorts, villas and inns in The BVI. Rather than mega-resorts, we have lovely hotels and intimate guest houses, some located on swathes of white sand, others tucked into tropical hillsides. All are personal and caring. When staying in The BVI you won't be part of a crowd and you won't be just a number. Prefer the sea to the land? The BVI offers even more. The Caribbean's largest bareboat and crewed charter yacht fleets call The British Virgin Islands home, yet the anchorages remain unspoiled and the sailing waters are unsurpassed. With dozens of anchorages to sail to - all within an hour or two cruise - no wonder The BVI is one of the world's top sailing destinations.

Country Profile

of British Virgin Islands
Background:
The British Virgin Islands comprise more than 40 Caribbean islands and islets, 16 of them are inhabited. First settled by the Dutch in 1648, the islands were annexed in 1672 by the English.
During the 17th century, the archipelago was divided into two territorial units, one English and the other Danish. Sugarcane, produced by slave labor, drove the islands' economy during the 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1917, the US purchased the Danish portion, which had been in economic decline since the abolition of slavery in 1848.

GREAT DEALS From Fodors.com Sampling Island Culture
Which Island for You? A Sampling of Island Culture
The Caribbean population is a rich gumbo of nationalities, including Americans and Canadians who have retired to and invested in the islands. Little remains of the indigenous populations (there are Carib communities on Dominica and St. Vincent, as well as tantalizing, if sparse, archaeological remains), and many other groups have left their cultural imprint on the Caribbean. Nowhere is African culture more noticeable than in island music. Calypso was born in Trinidad, and its catchy rhythms veil the barbed working-class satire of many of the lyrics. The island is also the stomping ground of a flat-out, freewheeling Carnival that rivals the pre-Lenten celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

Details
The British Virgin Islands, about 70 ( mostly uninhabited ) islands and cays, are one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations.
Fought over for centuries, they were finally controlled by the British in the mid-1600s, and later became an official British colony.
Tourism is the major business, and the BVI are closely associated with the economy and culture of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Steeped in the history of the British Navy, the islands are ringed by shipwrecks; the most famous of these - The RMS Rhone - is now a national marine park, and a favorite scuba diving point.
Road Town, the capital city, is crammed with local markets and boutiques, restaurants, government buildings, and cruise ship passengers.
Ferry service to the outer-islands is convenient and economical, but outer-island air service is limited.
Official Name British Virgin Islands, (BVI) a British dependent territory, claimed in 1672
