Modern Theatre and the London Stage
Tutor: Dr Alison Mark
This course examines some of the key modern dramatists and movements of the late nineteenth and twentieth century theatre in Britain and Europe. It aims to develop critical understanding of major plays, many of which have had an important influence on both European and American drama. The study of theatre as a performance art will be emphasised throughout the course. Theatre visits cover both plays studied on the course and exciting new productions in London. Each session will involve a variety of teaching methods, with an emphasis on group discussions, workshops and student activities. The course will look at the different crafts which are involved in each production, and, after theatre visits, examine the way in which directing, acting, sets, lighting, costumes, make-up and other elements contribute to the overall success of each performance. The intention is to invite performers and guest lecturers to some of the sessions and the course includes a back stage visit to a major London theatre.

190A: Studies in Shakespeare
Course Description:
This senior seminar will focus on the issue of text for performance in relation to the four Roman plays of Shakespeare: Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus, and Titus Andronicus. Students will study the plays as performance texts (with some attention to film and video versions), but in the context of learning about the history of the texts, the current theoretical arguments about the nature of editing, and the practice of the editors in the editions assigned. Although most students will probably possess copies of these plays already, I intend to make some specific recent editions the objects of study; other previously acquired copies will be useful for acts of comparison, but the assigned texts will be required. Since this is a senior seminar, enrollment is limited to 22 students. Some prior experience of studying or performing Shakespeare is desirable but not essential. Each student will be required to complete a substantial major writing project appropriate to a senior seminar (about 25 pages); some assigned exercises will make up part of that project.

Description
Major Minor Undergraduate Program Description
The English department offers three kinds of courses: Composition courses, undergraduate courses, and graduate courses. Composition courses develop skills in reading analytically and in writing persuasively. Undergraduate and graduate courses cover the entire range of English and American literature, as well as creative writing. Students majoring in English may elect a teaching emphasis, a creative writing emphasis, or a general literature emphasis. The teaching emphasis focuses on the study of composition and of language. The writing emphasis focuses on fiction, poetry, and article writing. Creative writing majors have an opportunity to work with distinguished professional writers of fiction and poetry. The general literature emphasis focuses on a series of related courses in various historical periods of English and American literature.
Career Alternatives Graduates have found the major excellent pre-professional training for graduate study in English, as well as for careers in teaching, writing, law, medicine, and library work. Many graduates are employed in journalism, publishing, advertising, and public information. Others have worked in local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as in industry and agriculture. Some have established their own businesses.

From Wikibooks
Greetings! The study of literature is one of the oldest studies existing still. For many years, universities avoided contemporary literature in favor of the classics (which we study here, also). In the department, we offer contemporary and ancient styles, writers, etc. for a full view of the development of human writing. Not only do we offer courses in literary studies; for those interested, we also offer courses and workshops in creative writing. While the Wikiversity project seems to have slowed down considerably, if at some point it becomes popular again, we will again discuss the availability of "decrees", and the School of Literature and English Studies will certainly participate. Search around below and feel free to sign up as a Wikiversity member in order to take part in classes we offer. As more instructors become interested, we'll offer more and more classes. Fond wishes, Atrivedi

We've known for centuries that LLC studies is matchless in preparing you for a lifetime of reading, analysis, self-discovery, and self-expression. Each of our four choices grounds you in the sophisticated thought and analysis of literary studies, then focuses you upon a track that will take you more deeply into literary studies, more broadly into cultural studies, or into the specific preparations you'll need for careers in education or law. In addition to the in-major core requirements (15 hours), each track has its own unique emphasis and requirements.
The Literature Track This choice allows you the maximum of time devoted to the various periods, genres, themes, major figures, and practices distinctive to region, ethnicity, or gender; you'll not only finish your degree with a rich sense of the best that has been thought and said, but you'll find yourself skilled in the art of analyzing any text or body of data before you and presenting your analysis persuasively and insightfully. The B.A. in English, LLC Option/Literature Track, requires 45 hours and 120 hours overall. The literature track requires 30 hours (beyond the 15-hour in-major core), distributed as follows:

Graduate study in English and American literature is pursued through a program that is both rigorous and flexible. Faculty expertise spans an impressive range of historical periods, authors, literary and aesthetic movements, and critical discourses. Special interests include interdisciplinary approaches to cultural studies; women's, gender, and sexuality studies; post-colonialism; and literary theory. Each year, papers are solicited nationally for an academic conference organized by graduate students. Past topics include: "Territorial Inscriptions: Mapping, Space, and Language" and "Violence and Domesticity." Most students admitted to the master's program proceed to doctoral studies. Most doctoral graduates hold academic positions in universities and colleges, although a few secure jobs in secondary schools, publishing, or as researchers for foundations or public television.
