British Literature 104A:
Reading the Traditional Canon, Part I
Instructor: M. Warren This course has been offered over the years as both English Literature 100A, more recently as Pre- and Early Modern Literature 166, and most recently as LTBR 104. The title describes the course accurately: it is primarily a study of works that have been traditionally associated with the idea of a canon of English Literature from Chaucer (late 14c.) to Cowper (d. 1800), but it also concerns the act of reading what has come to be known as "the canon." As such it provides a broad foundation for the study of earlier English literature. But it can also prove invaluable to students of later British and American literature and of Creative Writing by guiding them through many of the works that post-1800 writers and readers knew and know well. Students should have taken the lower division requirements of the major before enrolling; freshpersons are not admitted. LTBR 104A is an excellent course for students in their sophomore or junior years; it is particulary good as a first upper division course in the major. It is an especially valuable course for students contemplating graduate school in any English language literature, for students contemplating becoming high school teachers, and for students expecting to go on EAP to UK/I to study literature. Two five-page papers, a midterm, and a final.

The National Library of Medicine presents Mary Shelley's Frankenstein via the issues of eugenics, interspecies organ transplants, genetic engineering, and cloning. This site presents the Frankenstein story in the original novel form and film versions. Shelley's novel written almost 200 years ago touches on ethical topics we still debate today about what we consider "acceptable" science?

http://complit.intrasun.tcnj.edu/concentration.htm
The Interdisciplinary Concentrations
in Comparative Literature
Students who choose to complete the breadth requirements of TCNJ’s Liberal Learning program with an interdisciplinary concentration may choose a concentration in Comparative Literature. Like the minor in Comparative Literature , a n interdisciplinary concentration in Comparative Literature offers students a unique opportunity to study literary texts and traditions across cultural and linguistic boundaries, as well as within the larger context of related disciplines such as art, music, history, film, sociology, political science, linguistics, and philosophy. Such study enables and encourages social critique, focusing the student’s gaze beyond a single national perspective and a single language. In line with the goals of the Liberal Learning program, interdisciplinary concentrations in Comparative Literature teach students to “develop imaginative and conceptual skills needed to compare and evaluate alternative worldviews,” “acquire an informed and critical understanding of change in societies,” and “analyze how forms of expression are used to reflect, exalt, or challenge the values of a culture.” The Interdisciplinary Concentrations in Comparative Literature do not include courses that satisfy the Natural Science and Quantitative Reasoning requirements of the Liberal Learning program. As a result, students who complete an Interdisciplinary Concentration in Comparative Literature will need to take two additional courses – one in a lab science and one in quantitative reasoning – in order to satisfy all the Liberal Learning breadth requirements.

AH 2123 Required Texts: The Longman Anthology of English Literature, vol. 1 (ed. Damrosch)
The Way of the World (William Congreve) Course Requirements: Grades: Midterms (3) 300
Portfolio (3) 300
Oral Performance/participation 100 Exams: The exams will include multiple choice items, short answers, and longer essay questions, and will include all the material covered in the reading assignments and class lectures. Questions will range from the historical to the literary; you will be expected to know titles, authors, and (approximate) dates of composition, as well as main characters, themes, major issues and concerns. You may also be asked to identify major passages and to comment upon them. Essay questions will generally require a passage analysis, asking you to not only explain what's going on in the passage, but also to show its relevance to the larger work, its significance to the larger contextual themes and issues at work in the text, etc. Exams may not be made up, unless advance notice and an acceptable, documented excuse are provided. Reading Portfolio: You will be required to keep a "reading log" throughout the semester, one entry for every week of class. The intention of this assignment is to help you engage your own critical methods in textual analysis through the act of writing. Each entry should be typed and include 1) a brief synopsis of the salient features of the texts, including identification of its major themes, concerns, and/or issues, and 2) a brief critical interpretation of the texts in their cultural context. Plan on writing approximately 500 words, or one typed, single-spaced page, per week. Ideally you should complete each log as you read the texts, or immediately afterward, while your thoughts are still fresh. Please do not wait until after class discussions to write your logs; the point is to further your own critical readings of the texts.
