REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY
    ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Professor and Head of the Department G.P. Jones
The degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy are offered in English Language and Literature. Candidates for the M.A. in English may complete the programme as either part-time or full-time students. Candidates for the M.Phil. must spend at least two consecutive semesters as full-time students. Candidates for the Ph.D. in English must be in attendance as full-time students for at least three semesters of the programme.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY The Master of Philosophy in English Language and Literature is normally a two-year programme comprising 30 credit hours in graduate courses. While the aim is to broaden and deepen the student's knowledge of the whole field of English Language and Literature, it may be possible for the student to focus to some extent on particular areas of interest. A candidate who does not hold an Honours degree (or its equivalent: 60 credit hours in English with an average of grade B or higher) may be required to complete, in addition to the 30 required credit hours in graduate courses, such undergraduate courses as the Department may deem necessary. Candidates who have not previously completed English 4100, 4101 and 4900, or courses equivalent to them, will normally be required to register for these in addition to the 30 credit hours in graduate courses.
Evaluation i. There will be two two-hour written examinations. If the student has selected a special area of concentration (e.g., drama, North American Literature, the English language) one of the examinations will be on that area. If the student has selected no special area of concentration, but has instead tried to broaden and deepen his knowledge of the whole subject, both examination periods will be devoted to general topics in English language and literature.

H., et al, eds. The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Major Authors 7th Ed. New York: Norton, 2000. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a study of the major authors, literary periods, and terms associated with British Literature and is focused around the struggle between the individual and society as reflected in the texts in question. Through centuries of British Culture, decorum, manners, and class distinctions have been the means of organizing society, and yet the heroic and/or eccentric individual has also been celebrated. Our discussions will focus around the clash of these two widespread ideals and the way in which they are brought to tension and exposure in British literature. The course is a discussion format; students are expected to read the material listed on the syllabus and come to class prepared to participate in an investigation of the literature and to respond to questions and issues raised in class. This course meets literature course requirement in the General Education curriculum. The prerequisites are English 102 or 188.

    General Description:
The University of Chicago London Program provides students in the College with an opportunity to study British literature and history in the cultural and political capital of England. In the course of this autumn-quarter, ten-week program students take four courses . Three of these courses, which are devoted to British literature and history, are each compressed into approximately three weeks and taught in succession by Chicago faculty. The fourth course, on a London-based topic, runs throughout the term at a less intensive pace. London itselfEngland's glittering capital, with a history dating from Roman times, once the metropolitan hub of the British Empireis central to the mission of this program, and it is expected that program participants will make a serious project of exploring its corners. Toward this end the program includes a number of field trips both within and in the vicinity of London (possible sites, varying from year to year, include Bath, Canterbury, Cambridge, etc.). Program headquarters is a facility operated by the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in the Bloomsbury section of London.

    • Your project topic and date of oral report must be approved by March 24. Reports will be given between now and Apr. 27. A conference with the professor before your oral report is strongly recommended, to review plans for your class presentation. Come in as often as you like to consult on progress on your project. Your oral report time will be restricted to 10 minutes per person. Be sure to plan carefully so that you cover your topic within the time limit, rather than being cut off unfinished. Any pertinent format or media may be used in the oral reports: give an overview of the work you did on your project and/or use handouts, blackboard, recordings, videotape, Powerpoint, posters, etc. Be sure to arrange in advance for any equipment or photocopying you may need. The audience for your project is this class. Feel free to bring in guests; engage the class in discussion or debate; or ask us to pretend we are a special kind of audience, such as a high school class. The class will be asked to offer comments and questions after your report.
