    Introduction : Welcome to Will’s
You are about to meet an elite group of scholars from British literary history, authors and artists who spent a great deal of their day writing and conversing in the hundreds of English coffee and cocoa houses popular in 18 th century London. Called Penny Universities, they provided the common person with access to some of the greatest minds of the times. Who are some of these great minds, and who or what influenced their writing?
The Task : Choosing an Author
Your task is to select a British author and thoroughly research that writer, a representative sampling of his or her writing, and the historical context during which that writer wrote. From your research, you will develop an oral presentation, including a written summary of your findings, a literary critique of at least one piece of your author’s work, and a visual aid to enhance your presentation. This is not to be a report on the author’s life such as you might have done in elementary or middle school.

The largest part of this literature is written in the English language , but there are also separate literatures in the Welsh language Scottish Gaelic Scots and other languages. Northern Ireland is the only part of Ireland still part of the United Kingdom and it possesses literature in English, Ulster Scots and Irish . Irish writers have also played an important part in the development of English-language literature.
    Old Celtic literature
Literature in the Celtic languages of the islands is the oldest surviving vernacular literature in Europe. The Welsh literary tradition stretches from the 6th century to the 21st century . The oldest Welsh literature does not belong to the territory we know as Wales today, but rather to northern England and southern Scotland. But though it is dated to be from the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries, it has survived only in 13th and 14th century manuscript copies.
