Early printed British literature is highlighted in the Lilly Library by copies of the two Caxton printings of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (Westminster, ca. 1477 and 1484), John Gower's Confessio Amantis (Westminster, 1483), William Langland's The Vision of Piers Plowman (London, 1550), several 16 th century editions of the Mirrour for Magistrates and first editions of key books by Francis Bacon, John Donne, Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, John Lyly, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare. Up to the age of John Milton the Library's collection in British literature is primarily one of great books, but from the middle of the 17 th century to the present, efforts have been made to collect many authors in depth. Most notable among these are John Milton, Daniel Defoe, Laurence Sterne, William Wordsworth, George Gissing, Andrew Lang, A. E. Housman, W. B. Yeats, and Joseph Conrad. Noteworthy manuscripts include three of Robert Burns's best-known poems, "Auld Lang Syne," "O, My Love's like a red, red rose," and "Bruce at Bannochburn;" J. M. Barrie's

    Description:
This course will offer students an introduction to British literature from 1744 to the end of the eighteenth century. Although the course is chronologically designed to pick up where "The Age of Dryden and Pope" leaves off, no prior knowledge of eighteenth-century literature will be assumed. The readings in this course are organized around the broad theme of "Independence." We will begin by reading Samuel Johnson's letter to Lord Chesterfield, rejecting Chesterfield's offer of literary patronage and asserting Johnson's ambitions as an independent author. A reading of a selection of Johnson's works will provide us with an opportunity to test just how successful he was at achieving the independence he championed.

British Literature A - Syllabus Course Description As students read the literature pieces, they discuss a writer's ideology and personal and historical background for the time period. Students discover what assumptions a writer is making and how they are a part of a larger society with specific beliefs about human nature, love, politics, religion, and gender roles. Students are also aware of the ways these texts challenge, critique, and do battle with the dominant beliefs of society. Students critique texts as part of a larger cultural debate and evaluate the texts, and their writers, they must interpret how writers asserted themselves in the larger debate. Students are also encouraged to participate in group research projects and activities throughout the course, so that they may collaborate with other students and instructors. Middle-of-course and End-of-course surveys are conducted online, so that students may make suggestions and critique the progress of the course, curriculum content, technology, and teaching methodologies. These suggestions are reviewed and implemented by AMDG staff for continual improvement of course content and delivery. AMDG course content is built by a variety of methods. Throughout the course Gagne's Events of Instruction are emphasized as well as integrating all 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and 3 different learning styles, so that students are encouraged to learn on all levels. Gagne's events are clearly delineated within the lesson and Bloom's words are bolded throughout the course. Instructors are encouraged to adapt, add and include assignments that utilize recommended readings and activities for remediation or advancement of students in course content. Courses are handicapped accessible and adhere to ISTE
