BBC News Magazine
Lovely grub: A classic British lunch To those who see the French president as out of step with the pace of modern Europe, Jacques Chirac's jibe about British food is perhaps a case in point.
They've got a slick rail network, a home-grown car industry and magnificent stretches of Napoleonic architecture that escaped the German Luftwaffe's mighty payloads. We, on the other-hand, have half their unemployment, a global language and, for the next six months at least, the EU presidency. Oh, and the 2012 Olympics. Rivalries between the French and the British are at least as old as Agincourt, the 15th Century battle in which longbowmen under Henry V beat the French forces, despite being outnumbered. So when the French President Jacques Chirac cheerfully set about disparaging British culinary habits, his remarks stuck in the collective throat like an errant shard of escargot shell. One cannot trust people whose cuisine is so bad - after Finland, it is the country with the worst food

French take aim at British cooking as Olympics heat up
By Philippe Naughton, Times Online
An astonishing series of wisecracks from President Jacques Chirac about mad cow disease and awful British cooking brought Anglo-French rivalries into the open today only two days before Paris and London face off as rival candidates to host the 2012 Summer Games. NI_MPU('middle'); The French daily Liberation reported today that M Chirac entertained Chancellor Gerhard Schr der and President Vladimir Putin with a series of anti-British jokes on a balcony in the Russian city of Kaliningrad yesterday - unaware that he could be overheard by a small group of journalists covering the city's 150th anniversary celebrations. First of all M Chirac questioned the UK's contribution to the European Union farm sector, quipping: "The only thing they have done for European agriculture is mad cow disease."

TV chefs leave the critics cold
By Jack Malvern
A cookbook written by an unknown has been selected by a panel of experts as the best buy
Celebrity chefs, including Ainsley Harriott and Antony Worrall Thompson, have also been omitted from a list of the most useful cookbooks compiled by chefs and critics including Aldo Zilli and Giles Coren, food writer for The Times NI_MPU('middle'); Even Delia Smith was relegated to second place by a ten-year-old cookbook written by a chef who has never presented a television programme. The best kitchen companion, according to Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine, is Roast Chicken and Other Stories , written by Simon Hopkinson and Lindsey Bareham. Delia Smith, whose name has entered the Collins English Dictionary , was ranked second for her Complete Cookery Course , first published in 1978.

Stars of London
By Thomas Head Executive wine and food editor Thomas Head ate at ten London restaurants in three days. He didn't eat breakfast. Film, fashion, and food are the three big F's in London. Nobody balks at acknowledging British accomplishments in film and fashion, but for some reason London's image as a culinary disaster area has been harder to shake. Granted, a sort of general dreariness pervaded British cooking long after wartime rationing had ended. But in the past decade, London has become one of the bestand most expensivefood cities in the world. Modern British cooking, like Modern American cooking, re-creates classic regional dishes using fresh seasonal ingredients. European peasant food and traditional British comfort food are popular. Mediterranean and Asian influences are strong. London has always been a center of the wine trade. Bruce Poole of Chez Bruce contends that "the best wine lists in the world are in London." People in the United Kingdom now drink more wine than beer. London's dining scene, with more than 6,000 restaurants representing the cuisines of more than 60 countries, is booming. London has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any city but Paris.

36. Petrus From Marcus Wareing At The Berkeley
A Sample Menu The best possible taste Opening Hours All in good time Crown Prince of british cooking Marcus Wareing interview
http://www.theberkeleyhotellondon.com/berkeley/restaurants-and-bars/petrus/featu
Venue: Pétrus Information and Chef A Sample Menu The best possible taste ... Feedback Marcus Wareing Interview
Darius Sanai, interviews Marcus Wareing, the crown prince of British cooking, about his rise to success.
Marcus Wareing is sitting, rod-backed, in the lobby of The Berkeley hotel, occasionally whipping his head around like a fox to observe people coming and going.
Wiry-thin, intense, serious, he doesn't look like a chef, and he doesn't really look like a boxer either - the only other activity he embraced with any dedication.
'Boxing instilled a lot of discipline in me,' he says. 'It was tough but I loved it, because it was one-on-one aggression, and it kept me off the streets.'
Wareing is very much a chef. Once known chiefly as a protégé of his great friend and mentor, Gordon Ramsay, Wareing is now basking in a limelight of his own. As Chef/Patron of Pétrus at The Berkeley, and of The Savoy Grill, he is the brightest young thing in British cuisine.
Wareing's achievements speak for themselves, all the louder because of where he came from. He is a working-class boy from Southport, Merseyside, one of the most economically depressed areas of Britain and many worlds away from the glamour of central London.
'No one from Southport ever came to work in London or made it as a chef in London,' he says. 'It was inconceivable. No one would even know where to start.'

h
british cooking at its best by Diana Serbe She sent a recipe at the same time that she signed up for membership on the site. At the time, we were researching and testing pot pies (see Four and Twenty Blackbirds). We were up to our ears in that tasty British pastry and this Englishwoman sent us a recipe for a Hot Pot which is a similar dish, but without the pastries (or the calories therin). We tried it. It was light and clean, and added another dimension to our article. We've gotten to know Isobel, and to enjoy her style of communicating. Without notice or fanfare, she'll send a recipe saying that she was experimenting, that this recipe turned out well. We look forward to the recipes, for our own palates, as well as our members because her food is nutrition oriented, but always savory. We don't call it 'health food,' but it qualifies. We know a lot about a cook if we look at their recipes. Isobel's recipes are bright and eager, just like the face that smiles at us from this page. They are intelligent recipes, not given to excess or unnecessary embellishment. We've put them on the site and in our personal repertoires as well.
