161. Folklore: What Is It?
A definition and explanation of folklore, with examples.
http://www.folklore.bc.ca/Whatsfolk.htm
The British Columbia Folklore Society.
What is Folklore?
R ichard M. Dorson was the pre-eminent professor of folklore until his recent death. In a 1960 critique of Dorson's book American Folklore a Harvard professor of American Civilisation wrote that folklore was, "The most sentimental, and the most anti-intellectual scholarly discipline in America today." T folklore F F olklore is common to all people. Understanding, appreciating and sharing another culture's folklore transcends race, colour, class, and creed more effectively than any other single aspect of our lives and, as an element of our past and present society it is something we can all relate to. Its value is no less than any other part of our history and heritage and as such must be documented and preserved as a legacy for our future. T hat being said, it is almost impossible to give a succinct definition of folklore. I t is relatively easy to create an operational definition - one that describes folklore on the basis of ones own, personal interests. For instance, oral literature is one of the aspects of folklore, and by oral literature we mean such things as legends, tales, proverbs, sayings, dialect speech and folksongs. But if you are only interested in collecting proverbs your definition of folklore may be somewhat restricted.
F or a proper understanding and definition of folklore and folklife it is essential to look at its separate parts. Amongst these parts are...

FlyBC Airsports Paragliding
is a BC company. Our mission is "to promote safe Paragliding." After 25 years of spending tons of money on Cessnas, Aviation Fuel and staying within over-regulated air traffic control system guidelines, I discovered Paragliding after my lovely wife, Colleen , introduced me to Paragliding several years ago. I was quite unsatisfied with the lack of structured, safe paragliding training alternatives in the Fraser Valley and started FlyBC Airsports Paragliding - Jim Reich, Senior Instructor. Looking for a Paragliding Instructor?
When you are trying to locate a Paragliding School ask a few questions like . . .
Where are your facilities? Most instructors operate out of the back of a truck and don't actually have any facilities for ground school or reserve training or even a guaranteed landing field! FlyBC maintains a full training park with Classrooms, dedicated 25 acre landing field and 2 shuttle vehicles that are free for students and customers.
What is your experience level?

Comments Other fishermen told fishing was very good in the early morning with over 10 fish taken in early hours. We arrived later and it was slow. Being lucky enough got one red Spring. It fought really well. Seen one other guy who landed 20 pounder with seal bites. You need to keep your offering close to the bottom. Fishing right near markers is the best spot as moving down will result in lots of snags (unless you can cast really far). This bar is best fished at lower water.

You are here : Home Welcome to the Playhouse Theatre Company! We're spreading our wings and growing into our new contemporary theme by bringing some truly dynamic, moving and engaging productions to our Vancouver audience in the 2005/06 season. Starting the season off with a flourish is The Syringa Tree by Pamela Gien, in which we travel through 40 years of a family's compelling story during the apartheid years in South Africa. Our pre-Christmas treat this year is the sexy and sophisticated Steven Sondheim musical A Little Night Music . In the new year, join us for Vincent in Brixton , which takes place during the year Vincent Van Gogh spent living in London prior to becoming a painter. In March we bring the award-winning I Am My Own Wife to the stage, in which one actor plays more than 40 characters in a theatrical tour de force about survival and the stories we tell of our lives. And No Great Mischief , a transplanted tale of hope and heartbreak based on the 1999 best-seller by Alistair MacLeod is a fitting close to the Playhouse's 2005/06 season.
