Three Women, ca. 1901
Detail of B-01172
It has been difficult to know what women's lives have been like in the past because of the scarcity of records kept by women. Since the records we commonly use to examine history are records created by men in the course of their daily work, it is usually through records created by brothers, sons, fathers and husbands, that we know what women's lives may have been like.
Unfortunately the work women were engaged in until the latter part of the twentieth century, did not usually involve the creation or maintenance of textual documents, so often what we know of women's lives is what has been interpreted by men.
Not only has learning about women in the past been difficult because of the rarity of sources, historians until the 1970s were not particularly interested in the study of women. Before this time when historians wrote about women it was usually only the exceptional and extraordinary women who merited examination. During the last thirty years, academics have begun to write about more ordinary women and their lives. The exploration of how women's culture has changed over time has revolutionized not only how we see women's roles in the past but also how we assess the past generally. Margaret Conrad describes some of the issues in writing women's history "...we are looking at fundamental questions of sources and methodology. For example, when approaching history from a woman's vision, the question becomes not 'Why are women marginalized in the early trade movement?' but 'What are the essential features of working class women's lives?'. Not 'Why have women been relegated to the private sphere in industrial societies?' but 'How has women's sphere been transformed by the emergence of industrial society?'. The answer to questions such as these will allow us to transcend the less ambitious queries and lay the foundation for a genuine human history."

The Land British Columbia is Canada's westernmost province and one of North America's most mountainous regions. B.C. is bordered by the province of Alberta, the Yukon Territory and several U.S. states, including Alaska. Given its location, British Columbia is a gateway to the Pacific and Asia. Sometimes simply categorized as part of Canada's "West," the province is actually a distinct region both geographically and culturally. The variety of its landscape is the main reason for B.C.'s distinctiveness: its 947 800 km2 offer remarkable topographical contrasts. Where the Pacific Ocean reaches the continent, it meets a chain of islands, large and small, running from north to south. Some of these islands are nestled in fiords carved in the majestic Coastal Mountains, which rise more than 2000 m above sea level. To the east of the Coastal Mountains lies a rolling upland of forests, natural grasslands and lakes. Farther east, the Rocky Mountains (with peaks more than 4000 m high) separate B.C. from neighbouring Alberta. In the north, a small corner of the province is occupied by the Great Plains.

Welcome to the Web page of the History Program at the University of Northern British Columbia. The following is intended to be an introduction to the program and its offerings. Historians study what people have thought, said, and done in the past. By description, examination, and analysis they attempt to explain the past in order to understand the present. The study of History ought to lead to understanding, self-awareness, and wisdom: it contributes to critical thinking, helps to develop intellectual maturity, and assists students to present ideas clearly and accurately.
The study of History, as well as being valuable in itself, can lead to a career in business, government service, teaching, law, journalism, archival and museum work.

The History Department at the University of British Columbia offers a complete range of programmes, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours; a Master of Arts; and a Doctor of Philosophy.
The geographical foci and intellectual approaches of the thirty faculty members who comprise the department's teaching faculty vary widely. The Department's primary strengths lie in Canadian, Asian, European, American and Latin American history. In temporal terms its greatest emphasis is on the modern period (since 1800), though it has strength in the history of early modern Europe and North America.
The research and teaching interests of the department's faculty centre on a diverse set of problems and topics, including religion; gender; popular culture; the history of ideas; comparative nationalisms; migration; political culture; the history of science and technology; the family; native history; labour; international relations; resources and business; and urban history. Faculty research and teaching in these areas are supported by long-established and well-maintained designated collections in one of Canada's leading university research libraries.
The History Department's primary academic goals can be grouped under five headings.

Introduction
History is concerned with the study of the past. It draws on the social sciences and humanities for much of its data and conceptual techniques, but remains essentially a study in the dimension of time, with methods of enquiry appropriate to such a study. The study of history provides a broad education about the society in which we live and its past development. Since it involves examination of people in an almost unlimited variety of situations, the study of history also deepens the understanding of people’s capacities and failings. Properly pursued, it trains the mind to generalize on the basis of evidence and to distinguish propaganda from fact. A very useful handbook for UBC History students containing "basic and practical" information about the practice of History is available in the History Department Office (12th floor, Buchanan Tower). Proceeds from the sale of this booklet are used to support the Department's scholarships and essay prizes Departmental Advising Students who wish to become a history major must discuss their programme with a departmental adviser. The European influx eventually brought mining, logging, fishing, and agriculture on a commercial scale, all represented in displays in the modern history gallery. A turn-of-the-20th century town features a theatre with silent movies, a steam train pulling into the station, a Chinatown alley with resident cat, and the aroma of apple pie wafting from a kitchen. Contents Abstract Introduction Methods and Materials Introduction to Dragonflies ... Field Key to Adult Aeshnidae of British Columbia Species Profiles:
  • Aeshna californica
  • Aeshna canadensis
  • Aeshna constricta
  • Aeshna eremita ... Literature Cited Abstract Following a general introduction to dragonflies, this report profiles the 14 species of the family Aeshnidae, the Darners, that are found in British Columbia. Physical characteristics, habitat and flight period are given for each species. Distribution maps for each species were created by mapping the collection sites of specimens within the Royal British Columbia Museum collection. (Note: distribution maps are not included in this electronic version: please contact the RBCM for the maps.) A field key to adult aeshnids, and suggestions for future collecting, are also included in this report. Introduction Dragonflies are among the most attractive and graceful of the world's insects. Through much of the year they flit and glide among the reeds in ponds, marshes, streams and other wetland areas. But their importance goes far beyond being mere colourful ornaments. As genetically unique organisms, they have inherent value to biodiversity in British Columbia. The larvae are food for growing freshwater fish, and the tender bodies of the newly hatched adults provide tasty snacks for song birds. Dragonflies, and their smaller relatives the damselflies, eat huge numbers of mosquitoes and other small insects, helping to control populations of these pests.

As well as a host of other functions, the Office is a non-partisan, non-political centre of honours dedicated to those citizens whose service to British Columbia and Canada is recognized as being significant. This website is a service to citizens who would like to know more about the legacy, functions and current activities of the Office of Lieutenant Governor. It provides an opportunity to learn about the history, traditions and personnel associated through the years since British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871. The website can supply you with an up-to-date record of current protocol visits, special events, travels in the province and speeches delivered by the Lieutenant Governor. You will also find our Youth Zone for younger ‘web-surfers’ and a record of upcoming events. The photo gallery is updated regularly, portraying actions associated with the many and varied tasks of this Office. Visitor Information supplies you with information regarding directions, public access and programming for this Ceremonial Home of all British Columbians.
