British Columbia government apologizes to Indians
Throne speech: 'Errors have been made in the past'
Story Tools Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province. Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) British Columbia's government apologized for the past treatment of the Canadian province's Indians, saying its institutions have failed to make up for past discrimination. "Your government deeply regrets the mistakes that were made by governments of every political stripe over the course of our province's history," Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo said in a speech on Tuesday. "Errors have been made in the past," the speech said. "Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province." The apology came in the government's "throne speech," in which the governing Liberal Party outlined its upcoming legislative agenda. Last year, the government held a provincewide referendum on treaty negotiations that was soundly criticized by Indians as an attempt by the majority to impose its views on a minority. The government said the referendum was its attempt to kickstart a stalled treaty negotiation process that had cost millions and had yet to result in a single settlement.

British Columbia government slashes corporate taxes, breaks strikes
By Keith Jones 4 August 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author In all, the Liberals are cutting or outright eliminating seven corporate taxes. Manufacturers and resource companies are henceforth exempt from having to pay provincial sales tax on new machinery and equipment, the corporate capital tax is to be phased out over two years, and effective January 1, 2002 the income tax rate for corporations will be cut by three percentage points to 13.5 percent. In June, on their first full day in office, the Liberals announced a multibillion-dollar program of personal income tax cuts heavily skewed in favor of high-income earners. When the personal income and corporate tax cuts are added together, they total $1.2 billion this year and $2.1 billion in fiscal 2002-03. In their mini-budget, the Liberals announced $38 million in spending cuts to child care, environmental programs and job-training for welfare recipients. But these constitute only a tiny fraction of the social spending cuts that the Liberals will have to implement if they are to transform a projected $5 billion deficit in fiscal 2004 into a budget surplus.

Canada: business "flabbergasted" by British Columbia government's tax cut
By Keith Jones 14 June 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email During the election campaign, the BC Liberals promised to make the rate of taxation on the first $60,000 in income the lowest in the country by the end of their first term in office. Under the scheme they unveiled June 6, all personal income tax rates are to be reduced by 25 percent by next January 1. The cuts are to be implemented in three stages, the first stage of which has been made retroactive to the beginning of this year. Not only will these cuts give BC the country's lowest taxation rate on the two lowest taxation brackets, they reduce the tax rate on incomes over $85,000 from the highest in the country to the second lowest. While the Liberals are manipulating statistics to claim that in percentage terms their tax cuts are of greatest benefit to those with low incomes, the cuts are heavily skewed in favor of the well-to-do. British Columbians making $20,000 a year will see their taxes drop by about $236 in 2002, as compared to $1,947 for those earning $80,000, and $7,800 for those with incomes of $200,000.

British Columbia government fails on environmental record May 15, 2003 Vancouver - At the mid-term of its mandate, the government of British Columbia was today given a failing grade on its environmental performance by a broad coalition of conservation groups. The report card issued by the groups, and an accompanying fact-based website - BCFacts.org – provide a detailed examination of the government’s record on environmental stewardship. "The record is dismal. In fact, it amounts to nothing less than a dismantling of the environmental standards and safeguards that British Columbians have put in place," said Vicky Husband, Conservation Chair of the Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter. "A close look at what the BC Liberal government has done will shock the public." The report card and website reveal, for instance, that British Columbia is the only province in Canada to roll back drinking water standards since the Walkerton tragedy in May 2000. "Premier Gordon Campbell said his government would be open and transparent," said Jim Fulton, Executive Director of the David Suzuki Foundation. "Instead, they have changed important regulations without public consultation, and the way they are ramming environmental legislation through now is what you would expect from a tin-pot dictatorship." British Columbians have consistently ranked the environment as a high priority. The conservation groups encourage British Columbians to visit the website to learn about the radical changes the government has enacted in the last two years in order to determine if their concerns about the environment are being taken into account.

UN labour agency condemns violations by British Columbia Campbell Liberals have the worst record in North America; labour practices condemned nine times in two years by International Labour Organization
Ottawa – The International Labour Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations, has again condemned the Liberal government of British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell for violating workers’ human rights by contravening international labour standards that Canadian governments have committed to uphold.
In a highly critical report released recently, the ILO condemned the province for clear violations of freedom of association principles. It also recommends the government take specific actions to repair the damage done and demands the province come into compliance with international standards.
This is the ninth time in two years the ILO has condemned the B.C. government for trampling on the basic rights of workers, the worst record of any government in North America.
Canada a signatory
Canada and all provinces are signatories to many ILO Conventions, and have made the commitment “to respect, to promote and to realize, in good faith” the principles underlying these standards.
