The Cowichan Valley Regional District is the regional local government of the Cowichan Valley which lies between Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and Nanaimo on beautiful Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada The CVRD is a combination of four municipalities and nine Electoral Areas which deal with local issues on a region-wide perspective, as well as administering local functions for the unincorporated Electoral Areas directed by locally elected officials. Off the west coast of British Columbia, Canada and separated by the Georgia Strait lies Vancouver Island. Surrounded by scenic, rugged mountains, the Cowichan Valley is located between the City of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and the City of Nanaimo. The area was first inhabited by the Cowichan nation, encompassing all the independent aboriginal bands in the valley. Covering approximately 373,000 hectares, the Cowichan region stretches from the Malahat in the south, to the town of North Oyster in the north and west to the Pacific Ocean (Pacific Rim National Park and Trail) including the distinctive communities of Honeymoon Bay and Youbou on Cowichan Lake.

West Coast Geography and Topography
Vancouver Island is the largest island off the west coast of North America . Tucked against the mainland coast of British Columbia and the north shore of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, Vancouver Island occupies an area about the size of Holland . It stretches 500 kilometres (320 miles) southeast to northwest with an area of 3,175,000 hectares (9,493,171 acres) and 3,460.0896 kilometres (2,150 miles) of coastline. It is separated from Vancouver BC by the Strait of Georgia to the east and from Washington State , by the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the south and southeast. Vancouver Island is actually closer to the United States than to mainland west coast Canada A mountainous spine runs the length of Vancouver Island , breaking into long mountain fjords on its west coast that cut deeply into the island. Alberni Inlet cuts more than halfway through the island, ending at the community of Port Alberni . Saanich Inlet, in the Victoria area, is one of the few fjord inlets on Vancouver Island 's east coast. Along its southern half, the relief is so rugged that the

British Columbia, Canada's western most Province, is located on the Pacific Coast, and has a land and freshwater area of 95 million hectares. It is Canada's third largest Province after Ontario and Quebec, comprising 9.5% of Canada's total land area. The Province is nearly four times the size of Great Britain, 2.5 times larger than Japan and larger than any American State except Alaska. There are over 8 million hectares of designated parkland and over 80% of the land is forested. The Province is bounded by the US States of Washington, Idaho, and Montana in the South; the Province of Alberta in the East; the Northwest Territories and the Yukon on the North and the US State of Alaska on the Northwest. From South to North, B. C. stretches 1200 km and from East to West 1050 Km. The coastline, which is dotted with islands, extends 7000 km. Vancouver Island, situated off the West Coast of Mainland British Columbia has a population of approximately 700,000, is 450 km in length, (282 miles) and averages 90 km in width. (60 miles) Vancouver Island is generally divided into two distinct parts. The first is the East and South coastal plain extending from the shoreline toward the mountain ranges. The second, West and North coastal areas, feature rugged mountainous terrain and deep fjords and channels.

Now, four mines in British Columbia produce three-quarters of the world’s supply thestone stone Excerpt of story by Chris Tenove with photography by Brooke McDonald George Vanderwolf is a mountain goat, his wife says. He certainly looks it as he climbs ridges and lopes across scree slopes, pointing out tufts of mountain bluebells and delicate pink phlox as he passes. Vanderwolf has a toothpick-thin build, a ball cap that stays on until his head hits the pillow and muscular, walnut-brown forearms that have hauled sluice pails, broken horses, swung hammers and cracked rocks. When a pale green boulder catches his eye — something that might look good outside his wife’s gift shop — he hikes it 200 metres down the slope to his truck. After he turns his back, I try to lift the boulder and realize I will have a hernia before I make it 10 steps. I’m 31. Vanderwolf is 70. If Vanderwolf is a mountain goat, then these most certainly are his mountains. We’ve climbed up to the headwaters of Hell Creek in the Shulaps Range, northwest of the British Columbia hamlet of Lillooet. (Lillooet itself is a four-hour drive northeast of Vancouver.) For the past 50 years, Vanderwolf has tramped the pine forests, alpine meadows and ragged peaks of the Shulaps, working as a hunting guide, a logger, a prospector and a miner. “I’m not meaning to brag,” he tells me, “but I know every rock and tree up here by its first name.”
