What this "Resource" Is
When we at British Columbia's Open University decided to put GEOG 270, our second-year university-level Geography of British Columbia course, onto the Web, we thought that much of the resource material needed for the course (commentary, explanation, overviews, etc.), and many of the links to other sites that we would be identifying and critiquing for our students, would be useful to many people in the broader community not just to students taking our course for credit. With this general audience in mind, we decided to split the course into two distinct parts:

GEOG 1100 Introduction to Human Geography (3 credits)
(formerly GEOG 100) Have you ever wondered at the diversity of sights and images you have seen in your travels? Have you ever wondered why rural landscapes differ so much across the world while urban landscapes can seem so similar? These and many other questions are examined by human geographers. Geography 1100 is the first course to take in order to begin this exploration. This course is an introduction to the major traditions, themes and theories of human geography. Special emphasis is placed on the concepts, methods and data used by human geographers. It includes comparative and historical analyses of cultural landscapes, studies of the origin and diffusion of cultural phenomena, and an introduction to the concept of human/environment interactions. http://lwbc.bc.ca/02land/popup_geography.html
B.C. has a varied and dramatic geography. Mountain ranges divide the province, creating a series of valleys and a broad central interior plateau. Settlement is concentrated in these valleys and on the plateau. B.C.'s deeply indented, island-dotted coastline extends 7,000 kilometres. Hundreds of coast-hugging islands, the largest of which are Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, offer a protected coastal waterway. The province also has an abundance of waterways in the form of rivers, lakes and streams. Major river systems include the Fraser, Columbia, Skeena and Peace Rivers. British Columbia's rich variety of habitats includes forests, grasslands, meadows, wetlands, rivers, inter-tidal and sub-tidal zones. These habitats support the greatest diversity of plants and mammals of any province in Canada. In order to protect B.C.'s rich biodiversity, while allowing people to earn a living from sustainable natural resources, the provincial government began a series of initiatives in 1992 to increase land-use certainty for environmental, economic and community interests. These initiatives included preserving at least 12% of the province, or almost 11 million hectares, in parks and ecological reserves.

Introduction Wow, the realty market has taken a beating since 9-11 and the war against terrorism! With our economy in the dumps, many resource-based industry towns and agricultural regions are feeling the heat. They are in need of some new people to fill the jobs being vacated by retiring baby-boomers. They need doctors, teachers, carpenters, plumbers, salespeople, nurses, pavers, mill workers, cowboys, butchers, and farmers and many, many more- the list goes on! With many retirees moving to more moderate climates, the Come Live Here Realty Company is having a tough go of it as well. In desperation, they have decided to launch a campaign to re-populate rural Western Canada before these vibrant rural communities become a thing of the past. Natural resource and agricultural communities are the lifeblood of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and they can’t afford to lose any more people! Of course, that’s where YOU come in…

Tourism Delta, attract, enhance, improve and promote tourism in Delta therebypositioning Delta as a preferred travel destination.
    http://www.tourismdelta.bc.ca/geography.html
    Geography
Delta was one of the first areas settled along the Fraser River. The name "Delta" is derived from the fact that the community is located on fertile land at the delta of the Fraser River. Farming and fishing have been traditional economic activities and agriculture still accounts for more than half the land use designation in Delta. This green farmland and wetlands oasis is bounded by the Fraser River, the Strait of Georgia, the City of Surrey and the U.S. border at Boundary Bay.
Four distinct communities comprise Delta: Ladner, Tsawwassen, North Delta and Tsawwassen First Nations. Each of these communities has a distinct personality and is ready to welcome you to beautiful British Columbia.
Delta is the gateway to Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and to the U.S. town of Point Roberts. It is ideally situated, being crossed by Highway 91, 99, 10 and 17, allowing for easy access to the United States, Vancouver International Airport, the BC Ferries Terminal and Boundary Bay Airport. Delta has its own airport at Boundary Bay and is the site of the BC Ferries Terminal. Ladner Harbour provides morrage for 80 commercial fishing vessels. Delta Container Terminal, the Vancouver Port Authority's third biggest container terminal, is under expansion to increase capacity by 30 per cent. Throughput is forecasted to reach 850,000 twenty foot equivalents by 2007.
The entire area is a nature lover's delight with many scenic parks, beaches and a bird sanctuary. Outdoor enthusiasts can also frolic at Centennial Beach, walk or bike the dyke system, enjoy two regional parks or visit Burns Bog. The bog is the largest undeveloped urban land mass in North America and is home to many extraordinary rare plant and animal species. The municipality has played host to a variety of filming productions at the Boundary Bay Airport, in each of the residential communities and Ladner Village.

    BLUE MOUNTAIN
    Vineyard and Cellars LTD.
Geography Lesson Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars is located in the province of British Columbia in a region known as the Okanagan. Comprised of one great long valley and the low-lying mountains that flank it, the Okanagan starts at the centre mark of the shared border of British Columbia and Washington State (USA). The valley stretches northward from the town of Osoyoos to Vernon. Two major lakes, Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake run down the centre of the valley with many other smaller lakes adding to the beauty. Blue Mountain overlooks spectacular Vaseaux Lake which is surrounded by a protected wilderness preserve. The winery is located about 45 minutes from the Canada/US border near the small town of Okanagan Falls. From Vancouver, it's about a five hour drive to the area. The nearest town with major air access is Penticton, about 30 minutes north of Blue Mountain.
The Okanagan is a popular vacation destination year-round. In summer, favourite reasons to visit include water sports of all kinds, houseboat vacations, hiking and cycling. Many British Columbians make the Okanagan an excursion to buy farm-direct produce. Summer daytime temperatures are generally in the high 20's Celsius and can peak in the mid 30's Celsius. Mountain elevations cause drops in night time temperatures which help to enhance the flavour development of the grapes.
