Director of Ceremonies, Mr. Graham Kelsey, President of the Assembly of British Columbia Arts Councils, Mme. Monique Lacerte Roth, Treasurer of the Assembly, Prince George Councillor Murray Krause, Ms. Heike Haldane President of the Prince George and District Community Arts Council, Mr. Bill Percival, Arts Council representatives from 92 BC communities: I acknowledge with respect the Carrier and Sekani First Nations in whose traditional territories we are gathered for this important Assembly: Here we are, immediately in advance of another BC Arts and Culture week, commencing this year on April 23rd, with its annual showcase of recognition of the value of art in all our lives. We are aware that there is a remarkable multiplicity of artistic endeavour in the work of artists and arts councils that allow every citizen to see their own tastes reflected back to them in a wide varied of expression. Such expressions may include literary arts, orchestral, choral, vocal, dance, printmaking, artisans, masques and arts of every other discipline each one, guaranteeing enrichment in the lives of the people it touches. Increasingly you will see much non-First Nations fine art in British Columbia that is influenced by aboriginal concepts. Last night I was in Qualicum Beach at their Brant Wildlife Festival, which has an artistic, photographic and broad artistic base. As I noted the many representations of nature there, echoes ranged all the way from Emily Carr to Jack Shadbolt and far, far beyond. Artistic interpretation of the world that we all share reflects the rich diversity and complexity of the human family of which each of us is a member.

Vancouver City Guide
VANCOUVER Culture
Vancouver is a young city and it shows in the city’s cultural scene. While there are established companies in the traditional forms of classical music, opera, dance and theatre, none stand out in particular. It is the smaller outfits and the up-and-comers that make the cultural scene interesting and give a bit of an edge to things. Vancouver’s performing arts season generally runs from October to April. In summer, there are special concerts and numerous festivals. Information on performing arts can be found in The Georgia Straight (website: www.straight.com ), a free weekly newspaper, and the Thursday editions of the daily newspapers, The Vancouver Sun and The Province (website: www.vancouversun.com ). The Alliance for Arts and Culture , 938 Howe Street (tel: (604) 681 3535; website: www.allianceforarts.com ), is a good source of information for drop-in visitors (Monday to Friday 0900-1700). Tickets can be purchased directly from the venues or from Ticketmaster’s Artsline (tel: (604) 280 3311; website:

http://www.vecc.bc.ca/sponsors/alcan.html
Since its creation in 1973, the Vancouver East Cultural Centre has played a major part in the cultural development of the arts in Vancouver, throughout British Columbia, and across Canada through the presentation, by established and emerging artists, of innovative and exciting performing arts programmes. In order to celebrate our 25th anniversary, the Vancouver East Cultural Centre wanted to create a legacy that would celebrate British Columbia's arts community. In looking to find a corporate sponsor to help make an idea a reality, we knew that we had to find a company that had a strong vision, as well as a strong dedication to the arts community to see a project of this magnitude to fruition. We found such a company in Alcan BC. Alcan BC announced March 5, 2001 that they will continue to fund the three-year-old Alcan Performing Arts Award, and increase funding from $50,000 per annum to $60,000. The Alcan Performing Arts Award is a funding initiative in support of the creation of original works by BC artists and is the largest of its kind in Canada. At the end of Alcan's second three year commitment, the company will have contributed more than $330,000 towards the creation of original dance, theatre and music projects. The award rotates annually among the disciplines of dance, theatre and music/opera and is administered by the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. The award includes a run of at least four performances at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.
