and Tim Goddard (University of Calgary) Context and Purpose of the Study There is a growing body of literature that stresses the importance of leadership in providing quality education in Canadian schools serving predominantly aboriginal First Nations education must reflect the language, traditions, and culture of their communities and receive the resources necessary to ensure quality programming, and to ensure educational attainment and foster the "crucial skills for self-governance and economic self-reliance (RCAP, 1996, vol. 5, p. 3)." (Carr-Stewart, 2001, p. 141) She concludes by stating that education is not only a long-neglected treaty commitment, but is crucial to the rebalancing of political and economic power between Aboriginal nations and Canadian governments (p. 141). Despite a growing recognition of the critical role of leadership in improving aboriginal schooling, there has to date been a tendency to privilege the perspectives of political analysts, educational theorists, and politicians and policy makers (Assembly of First Nations, 1988; Hawthorne Report, 1966/67; Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, 1996). Featuring: Natural History
Tuesday, 1 March to Thursday, 31 March 2005 Royal BC Museum natural history experts will be in the 3rd floor gallery from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day during the month of March. The Experts in the Galleries program will feature displays and demonstrations hosted by the Royal BC Museum's Natural History Section. Curators, Collection Managers, the Registrar and the Section Manager are researching and documenting the Museum's specimen collections and are pleased to answer your questions about their work and the displays in the Experts' area. Only one area of expertise is represented each day. You may find a botany, entomology or invertebrate zoology expert on the day of your visit. Please stop by and learn more about the natural history of British Columbia and the role the Royal BC Museum plays in collecting, research and conservation. The following range of activities will be covered over the month of March:
  • examining and identifying dragonflies and sea stars from the RBCM collection mounting and labelling plant specimens for the RBCM herbarium talking about the highly developed senses of owls displaying butterflies, mammal bones and furs, squids and octopuses, birds
