NOTES FROM ACADEME
Surveying History, One Bridge at a Time
By LAWRENCE BIEMILLER
Shrewsbury, Vt. The trick is to measure as much as possible, count everything you can, take lots of photographs, and draw every detail all without slipping down a ladder ALSO SEE:
The students' covered-bridge drawings

or sliding off a rock into the gurgling Cold River. For seven industrious, cheerful students documenting an 1880 covered bridge on a dirt road here, this summer is all about getting the numbers right, and keeping straight which numbers belong to which parts of which drawing.
Just now two of the students are underneath the wooden span, called the Brown Bridge, with a brightly marked six-foot scale stick they're using to record how high the bridge stands above the sun-dappled riverbed. Two more are taking turns climbing a lightweight telescoping ladder inside, getting final dimensions for the roof supports and figuring out how they're joined to the tops of the walls. Every so often a car rumbles across, its occupants peering out at the team members in their bright-orange safety vests. Three other students are a few yards upstream, setting up surveying equipment that will be used to measure how much the 112-foot-long bridge sags under a live load in this case, a county road crew's nine-ton truck, due just before lunch.

167. History And Architecture Of The Chaudiére Falls
This building is an amazing monument of industrial architecture. In 1928 aseries of stone and wooden bridges across the Chaudière Falls were built
http://aix1.uottawa.ca/~weinberg/chaudier.html
01 Booth Board Mill/Usine de Planches Booth (1912, 1918, 1928) This building is an amazing monument of industrial architecture. Its made of poured concrete and resembles a fantastic medieval fortress more than a factory. The walls crawl around the rocky edge of the island and seem to bend and poke out where ever a tank or process demanded it. The steam plant is in two parts. The oldest part is south behind the security office. In front of this older part is the concrete base remaining from the original 175 foot high smokestack. It was built in 1905-06 to generate steam for use in the fine paper and newsprint operation J.R. Booth decided to set up at the age of 77. It used to house 13 Babcox and Wilcox -type straight-tube boilers. The current E.B. Eddy steam plant is just in front of it .
The most interesting part of this brick building is the de-watered channel beside it on the south. This channel, now obstructed by trees and bushes, used to be filled with water from the Buchanan channel across the road which ran the water wheels which worked the mill. Behind the pulp mill from top of the bulkhead at the end of the channel one can see the various deflectors and chutes with which the water was controlled. A nice view of O.H. Power House #4 is also available from behind it. 04 Booth Office/Bureau Booth (1900)
05 Booth Stables/Ecuries Booth (1900)
06 Booth Stores and Blacksmith Shop/Magasins et forge Booth (1900)
These three buildings were built to replace others destroyed in the great fire of 1900. The careful observer can see the old stone foundations from the pre-fire buildings that were reused as the foundation for the current red brick walls.

Museum of Ancient Bridges
Taishun County is situated in southwest Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. It boasts a zigzagging mountain range dotted with little streams and small valleys. Thousands of years of rich Chinese culture have contributed to the extraordinary attraction of this peaceful county, where visitors can appreciate more than 900 covered bridges. Upon entering the village, the first sight to hit your eyes is Dongxi Bridge. The corridor of this bridge looks like a crimson palace with four flying eaves engraved at each end. The bridge, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), has endured 400 years of weather beating, and continues to stand firmly with a longlasting elegance, although some broken prints can be detected. In the pre-dawn hours, the silhouette of the bridge appears to be a rainbow rising from outer space. Not far away, visitors find another covered bridge of similar structure and style - Beijian Bridge. The main structure of this bridge has 15 small covered rooms, which combine to form a long alley. Locals called these two bridges "sister bridges". These two sisters are regarded as the most beautiful rainbow bridges in China, maybe even the world. Beijian Bridge is a glamorous site. The clear creeks and simple, plain Ming Dynasty-styled houses combine perfectly into a natural, integrated scene.

THE SOCIAL ORGANIZATION OF BUILDING
JOSEPH D. CONWILL
PO BOX 829, RANGELEY ME 04970 USA
The legendary covered bridge builder is a folk figure like the old-time lumberjack, or the tall ship sailor. We know the image: self-taught, a farmer in the summer and a bridge-builder in the winter, he may or may not have been able to read and write. But he was capable of building sturdy bridges, which have lasted in service over a century.
But does the folk image match the reality? Sometimes it does. James F. Tasker of Cornish, New Hampshire was such a man. We know that he could not read or write from the testimony of his former employee, Cyrus Barton, in the archives of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Richard Sanders Allen collection. A closer look shows that more often than not, the folk image is not true. Today I want to discuss the diversity of covered bridge builders as a social group, and also to highlight some historical problems, which sometimes cause the wrong person to be credited as builder. Finally I will mention some special areas where research is needed, and if you know someone in need of an idea for a Ph.D. thesis, there is opportunity in this field.

Benton County History The first white settlers in Benton County were probably Thomas Reeves and Daniel McKissick, who erected cabins where they lived during the winter of 1845-46. Benton County was officially created by an act of the Territorial Legislature on December 23, 1847. The county was created out of an area which was originally inhabited by the Kalapuya Indians, and named after Thomas H. Benton of Missouri, an advocate of development of the Oregon Territory. Benton County as it is constituted today has 668 square miles of land area. Corvallis Early settlers were Haman C. Lewis, who erected a cabin a few miles north of Corvallis in the spring of 1846; J.C. Avery, who took claim on what is now the south side of Corvallis in 1845 and built the first home on the present city limits in June of 1846; William F. Dixon, who took a claim on what is now the north part of the city in the spring of 1846; and Wyman St. Clair, who took a claim in the Philomath area and is generally believed to be the person responsible for naming Mary's River, Mary's Peak, and giving Corvallis its original name of Marysville. Land for the city was tendered by Avery and Dixon in the winter of 1847. In 1850, Avery erected the first real store in the city, and a hotel was built in 1850. The first school building was built in 1848, but not used until 1850 when A. G. Hovey became the first teacher. Avery operated a canoe ferry across the Mary's River, and Dixon operated a small ferry across the Willamette River as early as 1848. By 1850, a regular ferry was in operation across the Willamette and by 1851, the town had two or three stores, a combined store/ saloon, a hotel, two blacksmith shops, a school and several homes. It was in 1851 that the southern city limits were established and Marysville named as the official county seat.

In the Friends of the Wissahickon's account of the Trails' Master Plan, 1995, their historical research discovered evidence that the Wissahickon Valley's mills were a part of the region's first economic activity. "Although certainly not comparable to a modern industrial site, it appears that the Wissahickon Valley may be viewed as the first reclaimed "industrial" area in the United States, another significant aspect of its history." The remaining architecturally historical resources of the Valley that survived the demolition of most mills and resort hotels and road houses include: Wissahickon Hall
Once a tavern for resort visitors in the 18th Century, this building is now used as a barracks for park police. The era of prohibition brought economic ruin to this resort hotspot which stands, along with the Valley Green Inn, as the remaining monuments to that exciting era in Wissahickon history. Hermitage Estate
Located at the top of the hill, on the left of Hermit's Lane, this mansion marks the site of the "Tabernacle of the Mystic Brotherhood," a religious sect who were exiled from Germany as religious outcasts. Erected in 1695-96, founder John Kelpius, of Kelpius Cave fame, was the first to use "Rocks-Burrow" in a letter dated May 25, 1706.
